It's a British Bank. Its World HQ is in London, not HK nor Shanghai.
The bank was established in HK in 1865 to finance trade between Europe, India and China.

before the agressive expansion in the 80/90s, HSBC was headquarted in Hong Kong for over 100 years. however, the HQ was moved back to london in 1991. even now in 2005, Hong Kong still contributes a considerable amount of revenue to HSBC Plc. (25%+) and is HSBC's HQ for the Asia-Pacific Region.

in Hong Kong, HSBC is still known as the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation and is incorporated in Hong Kong. :-)

hsbc is a british bank started
by a scot in hkg on 1865
Due to historical and cultural reasons ...
hong kong is the only place in the world where hsbc
is still called hong kong and shanghai bank corp ...
because most locals(specially the older ones) still recognized the bank as hong kong bank
hsbc was "The Bank" in the city for many years
providing services for hong kong's colonial gov't,
and issued currency for the city
it was virtually non-existent in britain prior to the acquisition of Mid-land bank in the 90s ...
however most of its personel in the upper mgmt is
british

It's a Hong Kong's bank. For some political reason the so called "HQ" was moved to London during the ninties when Hong Kong was handed back to China, same idea as many HK people emigrating to western countries during the same period. And it's not the only public company that did this move. Jardine for example moved their "HQ" to Singapore. It makes no economic sense for them to move. Why would you move to a tiny little island in the middle of no where when the bulk of your current client base and your future is in Asia. The so called headquarter in London is no more than an address for the purpose of registration. All major business decisions are still done in HK.

London-based HSBC is just a holding company. It's technically not a bank but just an umbrella corporation that owns all the regional banking divisions. The Hong Kong-based flagship is the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, which is locally-incorporated. In turn, the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation reports to the HSBC holding company.

Jardine actually is headquartered in Hong Kong, but their shares were delisted on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and refloated in Singapore. At the time, Jardine had the biggest market capitalisation on the stock market and it was big news. However, Jardine's stock has lost its investor lustre since Hong Kongers did not follow it to Singapore. Rather, Jardine has since been overshadowed by the Hong Kong property firms, HSBC, and the Chinese corporate giants. Even within Jardine management, there has been much criticism over the decision to delist from Hong Kong as being strategically devastating.

HSBC is established by a British in Hong Kong, but due to the fear of handover in 1997, it moved back to London in 1991. But I think HSBC would rather say itself to be an British company rather then Hong Kong...haha
