Welcome to the board and nice thread Jekta looks almost like an airport - it will probably be one of the nicer malls in the country. Anyone know how many shops it will have?

Shame about the hotel then. I think it would have been very nice.

Welcome to the forum btw.

Langnes shopping center, South.
This, also respectably sized (though not as big as the 60 000 m2 Jekta center), shopping center is located right next to the new Jekta Shopping Center. The 36 000 m2 center will include the biggest Rema 1000 shop in Norway, as well as of course many other shops.
Status: Under construction.

Tromsø seafront project
A massive development project of the area between Breivika and Sentrum is planned, with apartments, parks and commercial areas. There are many ideas being kicked around, but no further details has been released for hearing yet.

"Kræmer-area"
The section is going to be made into a modern business- and apartment area. First phase is 8500 m2 and will be completed in summer 2012.
Status: Under construction.

Sydspissen bydel, Lanes
Offices, apartments, commercial areas and more are planned.
Status: Planning.

University of Tromsø - Technology and Medicine buildings
The university is in large need of more space for the rapid increase in student numbers. The technology building will be 8200 m2. The current medicine and health related studies building has two times the amount of students (and employees) it was built for! The new building will be 19 200 m2, and is urgently needed.
Status: Planning completed, but pending financing from the government. Estimated start 2012.

Strandgatekvartalet
A new block in the heart of Tromsø. There has been a lot of discussion regarding the height (typical..), and the first image below is the latest "revision". It is one fl. lower then the original consept. (org. to the left, latest to the right)
Status: Planning.

Domuskvartalet
16 400 m2 building by the waterfront. The project consists of a complex commercial programme with shops, restaurants, offices and a hotel, in addition to apartments on the top floors.
Status: Planning.

Good stuff from Tromsø!

Hope the new mega-Jekta mall won't steal too much downtown traffic..

Indeed!

I think it is just healthy though. But yes, Jekta and the new Langnes South (Taco A\S, see 2nd post) surely will attract many more people then today, but downtown will always have the advantage of being.. Well, downtown hehe. And there are after all lots of stuff in the works there too, so I think they'll kick around just fine

Vervet

There are currently three alternatives being discussed for this massive expansion of Tromsø downtown by the seafront. A very exciting project, which is now very close to completing the planning process. Comparison of the three alternatives bellow.
Status: Planning, done within 2011.

Havn
80 000 m2.

Brygge
58 000 m2.

Pir
57 000 m2.

I'm leaning towards Brygge to be honest. It is fairly large with lots of business and housing area (which I think is most important), and esthetically very nice. I find the Havn prospect good, with one major exception: The highest building there looks terrible! Looks like something I would make with my LEGO.

This week the K1 Storhandel opened (partially). The mall will be 45 000 m2 when all the stores have been opened, containing Jysk, Rema 1000 (the world's largest Rema 1000 store), Elkjøp Megastore, JULA, ToysRus and more.

Image (low quality, I know..) taken to show some of the outside facade:

The mall will have a bridge and tunnel passage to its big neighbor, Jekta.

Speaking of Jekta, here are the latest construction images from the progress there:

As a reminder: Jekta will open partially for the Christmas shopping in 2012, and be completed early spring 2013.

Judging by the comments, NIMBY'ism is not so widespread in Tromsø(?) People see the positive effects with this, even though I think Express hotel looks a bit from the 80's..

And btw, I didn't knew about Artic center. Seems like a pretty huge project!
