It's not a question of if but when Myer are leaving Dandenong. A planning permit has already been issued for each floor to be carved up into new tenancies, including 'mini majors' and a gymnasium. The inactive Myer entry to Palm Plaza will also be replaced by another 3 shops fronting Palm Plaza.

That's probably not a bad thing if it activates other areas of Dandenong. When they shut the shopping centre I'll start celebrating.

Dandenong's biggest mistake is not Dandenong Plaza, its Fountain Gate. Had that energy been put into central Dandenong and Dandenong Plaza, we might actually have somewhere to start in terms of 'Parramatta' potential. Parramatta, and Chatswood are good examples of shopping centre and local commerce coexisting, without stepping on each others shoes too much.
That's something these suburban Sydney hubs have done well, they haven't denied the allure of the shopping centre, but they didn't put them in odd places, either. If Melbourne had gone this way we'd have seen the likes of Highpoint closer to Footscray, and Westfield Doncaster would be Westfield Box Hill.

I agree.Having those centres near rail stations and other commerce would really have generated significant benefits for creating true hubs. Oh well it wasn't to be.

Melbourne development focus is solely on CBD and its inner suburbs which are CBD, southbank, docklands and South Yarra. The Victorian forum proves it from the amount of CBD and docklands threads it has. The outer suburbs are neglected.
Yeh that's right; Fountain Gate should have been in Dandenong rather than in the middle of...somewhere. |

There is significant development going on in the suburbs too, so it's not all focused on the area you mention. Apartments and retail/commercial going up in places like Hawthorn, Hampton, Doncaster, Preston and Footscray, with plans for areas like Sunshine and Ringwood also to undergo significant change. Yes, more could be done but it goes on demand and at the end of the day, most developers are using pushing s*** uphill trying to build anything significant in the suburbs. The NIMBY lobby have it far too easy out there.

Melbournes roads and train network can't support one giant CBD so other hubs are needed. The government need to realize this and invest in them. Bit of paint and some new pathways is not investing the money wisely in my view. Put more education in dandenong is something they need to do. Look at Frankston with its monash and tafe campus close walking distance to Frankston CBD. That's what dandenong needs!

When you look at all the empty plots of land waiting to be developed downtown, it's clear that Melbourne CBD has a long way to go before scarcity of land forces us to develop a new satellite CBD. |

There's a place for both strategies to be undertaken.Strategic development of a few main suburban hubs should take place but the Expanded CBD area (inc. Southbank, Docklands, Fishermans Bend) should be the main priority at this stage. Councils need to be smarter with their development strategy to maximize potential of key areas in their control. At present, many seem confused as to what they are trying to achieve and are too busy pandering to many NIMBY groups.

I have to admit the new council building is gonna be an impressive building from what is already Built. Looks ugly in proposed images but just the cement walls up are looking impressive and interesting!

I have noticed a lot of multi level permits being approved but no construction. A lot of places seem to get permit approved then sell land with permit.
