Air marshal Raghunath Nambiar to be the first Keralite to hold the post of deputy chief of IAF

Thiruvananthapuram: Air marshal Raghunath Nambiar will take charge as the deputy chief of staff (DCAS) of the Indian Air Force (IAF) Wednesday. He is the first Keralite to hold the post, the third highest at the head quarters.

Earlier, he was the senior air staff officer at eastern air command of the IAF at Shillong. He is an experimental test pilot, with more than 4,700 hours of flying experience in over 35 types of fighter, transport and helicopters. He has over 2,300 hours of experience in Mirage 2000 alone, which is an Indian record.

Nambiar who hails from Kadachira near Kannur was the one who made the first trial landing at Kannur International Airport last year.

Commonwealth war graves

From one of Kannur Diaries's most passionate contributors, Vishnu, writing an account in first person of his experiences in discovering a "little secret" (a British colonial era war cemetery) in the heart of Kannur:

MEMENTO MORI
‘Commonwealth War Graves’ - my eyes flashed through these words while passing through the Snehalayam Road. It reverberated in me. For the first time my pride in knowing this land like back of my hand was shattered. Ever since joining St.Michael’s I has fallen in love with the town of Kannur. Suddenly, I felt ashamed for not noticing this landmark in the last 18 years or so of my living in Kannur, though it was situated at a walk able distance from my school.

I feel proud to share my experience at the ‘Commonwealth War Graves’. I purposefully ignored the names on the graves and read the year in which it was built for two reasons: to know the time period of the grave and to avoid those names to creep into my dreams at midnight.

I saw a man toiling with his pick axe probably digging a grave. With all the amount of courage left in me I marched towards him. He was Joy, at least his name shared some joy though there none on his face. I enquired about the war grave yard. With no anxiety in his voice, without looking at me he replied “that corner”. His attitude or my excitement, I don’t know which ended the conversation. I rushed towards the corner he mentioned.

On my way I took a stick with me, expecting that it would do charm for me like it did for Harry Potter. Crossing an old twisted rusted iron fence, I realised, I had reached. The initial excitement took me further inside. I felt like I am far away from present or the now. The first grave I came across was of Crane, the infant son of Lieutenant Brush H M. Crane had departed on a Sunday, 11th February,1816. He was just 9 months and 6 days old.

Suddenly all possible horrors came pouring in me. I felt like I was the only person left in the world. It took some time for me to gather myself and move forward. But still the thoughts like nobody including Joy will hear me even if I scream at the loudest possible voice and the foolishness committed by not recharging my mobile went on scripting 'new fictions' inside my head.

I stretched out my hand pointing the stick at the grave stone like a wand whispering ‘avadakedavra’, just to make sure. Then I met Lieutenant Alexander Read, Lieutenant Edmund Dirk Wright, Lieutenant C G Boulcott and a few others. All of them from the 19th century. They all stood like war heroes fit to fight for glory.

Each grave was different from the other in one way or the other. Some in its structure, while some in its font, then some in the language while some are still in the bush untouched. I was overjoyed, started running around the grave stones; perhaps I was feeling something similar to what Christopher Columbus or Neil Armstrong felt - the first to see a new sight.

Jokes apart, this is my responsibility, our responsibility to shower honour to this grave. To bring it back to notice. Though it is located at the heart of Kannur but most of us are unaware about it.

This cemetery is one among the cemeteries in 23000 locations, in 154 countries as per The Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The official website of The Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists the grave of one William Pratt who fought in World War I but it forgets everyone else. Or perhaps history forgotten all of them.

I believe its high-time to act - to conserve. It is not just a monument; it is not just a grave yard having centuries-old graves, it is more unique than that - it is the memory of Cannanore, of what Kannur once was.

#CannLoom
Kannur handloom is probably the finest handloom in the country in terms of quality. It is for this reason that Kannur is called the Land of Looms and Lores.

In an attempt to bring handloom to the forefront, make it more contemporary, we had given an idea to the designers to come up with a design that combines Looms and Lores. This was in November/December 2016.

In January 2017, we had posted pictures of two shirts, made according to this theme and asked all of you whether you would be interested in buying a piece. Thanks to your overwhelming response, we decided to go ahead.
It is with a great sense of pride, satisfaction and excitement that I present to you, the Cannloom 'Looms and Lores' series.

125 pure linen Theyyam shirts
&
25 pure cotton Kalari shirts are ready and will be up for sale on Amazon from the 14th of May, 2017. I believe this will be the first time, co-operative society handloom will be entering the online marketplace.
My deep gratitude to Anusree and the Weavers team from Kuthuparamba Weavers Co-operative Society, for the design & execution. Also deserving appreciation is Hiba and her team from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Kannur, who made the photoshoot possible.

This is just Phase 1. Based on your response and feedback, we will take Cannloom - our new brand name for Kannur handloom - to greater heights!
