Thalassery set to mark 129 years of cake baking

KANNUR The first Christmas cake in India was baked in Thalassery, a city in south Indian state of Kerala which is also famous for circus, cricket and communism. It is now set to celebrate the 129th anniversary of the first cake on January 21 and 22.

It was a British order in 1883 that led to the baking of a Christmas cake for the first time in the country.

Kerala Bakers’ Association (KBA) wants the occasion to be a memorable one.

It will bake an egg-free cake weighing about 1,200 kilograms with pictures of 400 prominent personalities, including Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Dr BR Ambedkar and Sree Naryana Guru iced to perfection on top of it.

Pictures of several prominent cricket players like Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi who had played in Thalassery will also adorn the cake. In short it will be a small depiction of the state’s history.

“The cake will be 350 feet long, 1.5 metre wide and would contain 400 pictures highlighting the socio-cultural and political history of the nation,” said the office-bearers of the KBA in Kannur on Thursday.

MP Ramesh, Treasurer of KBA said that Thalassery has had several firsts.

“It was in Parappuram near Thalassery the Communist Party in Kerala was born. Thalassery is also known as the birth place of Indian circus and cricket. So we have termed our festival as ‘the story of a land’. We have also arranged for a baking contest,” he said.

Cultural sessions to be attended by leading writers, federal and state ministers are also in the itinerary, he added.

Bakers to mark birth of first cake

Thalassery is famed for four Cs; circus, cricket, communism and cakes. Circus industry dead and cricket moving over to fashionable Kochi, only Communists and cakes thrive in Thalassery.

From here communism and bakeries spread across the state not long ago.

The country’s first Christmas cake, in fact, was made in 1883 in Thalassery based on an order placed by one British.

The Kerala Bakers’ Association (KBA) is celebrating 129th birth anniversary of the Indian cake on January 21 and 22 when it would unveil a mammoth cake weighing about 1200 kilograms.

“The cake would be 350 ft in length and 1½ in breadth and would contain 400 pictures”, said Mr M.P.Ramesh, proprietor, Cochin Bakery, which is making this egg-free, alcohol-free cake.

The cake will have pictures of Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranatha Tagore, Dr.Ambedkar, central and state ministers and opposition leaders including V.S.Achuthanandan.

The cake will also portray Thalassery’s pictorial history. “You know the district has many firsts. It was here at Parappuram near Pinarayi Communist movement took birth. Also, it was once the nerve-centre of Indian circus industry”, he said.

Pictures of eminent cricket stars would also decorate the cake since the district traditionally has been passionate about the game. Many cricket heroes, including Pataudi, had played in Thalassery, Ramesh noted.

It was one Mamballi Bappu in Thalassery who made the first Christmas cake in the country based on an order placed by one Brown.

The Englishman who tasted the cake had found it excellent. Though he didn’t know Bappu instead of whisky had used arrack in its preparation!

The 129th anniversary celebrations of the first cake would be massive in scale and the event would be graced by several members of the Oommen Chandy ministry and other Opposition leaders. “We want to make it a memorable event” said KBA secretary P.M.Sankaran.

A total of Rs.1.3 crore has been earmarked for the health and welfare of the elderly, women, and children.

Finance standing committee chairman C.K. Rameshan, on Monday, presented the budget, which shows a total expenditure of Rs.83 crore.

A sum of Rs.2.5 crore has been earmarked for a shopping complex near the proposed modern fish market at Manjodi, while another shopping complex at the new bus-stand will get Rs.15 lakh. The town hall kitchen construction is estimated at Rs.30 lakh, while streetlights and replacements of bulbs with tubelights will cost Rs.50 lakh.

A review of the various development projects undertaken in the previous financial year finds the revenue and expenditure at Rs.32.86 crore. Of the total amount of Rs.41.2 crore, the municipality had remitted Rs.2.6 crore towards the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns-approved drinking water project. As many as 72 houses were demolished in Nayanar colony. Thirty-two families were rehabilitated. Construction of houses for 16 families was completed. The remaining 16 will be considered in the next budget, Mr. Rameshan said.

A sum of Rs.4.5 lakh was spent for land acquisition at Chirakkekavu for the construction of a water tank.

Apart from Rs.1 crore set apart by the previous government, an additional grant of Rs.1.5 crore would aid the renovation of the municipal stadium. Projects such as construction of O.V. Road diversion and a town hall complex had been planned for the next financial year.

Chandy promises more facilities for MCC

The government will continue to pressure the Centre for a Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) status for the Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC), Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said. He was speaking after inaugurating the Dual Energy Linear Accelerator on the MCC premises here on Tuesday.

Many discussions had already been held with Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad , Mr. Chandy said.

The centre would also be provided a nursing college and better infrastructure. The disparity in remuneration between the non-academic staff of RCC, Thiruvananthapuram, and MCC, would also be given due consideration, he added.

Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, MLA, while presiding over the function said that a research centre and staff quarters for the centre should also be considered.

The Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for a Stem Cell Transplantation Unit at the centre while Health Minister Adoor Prakash laid the foundation stone for a Paediatric Oncology Block and inaugurated the Treatment Planning System. Thalassery's secret tomb codes
If it were the cuisine, heritage sites and cultural legacy which had placed the town of Thalassery on the tourist map till now, a very distinctive aspect, the burial grounds here seem to be the next in the list to invite global attention.

While a recent visit by a social anthropologist associated with the British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia (BACSA) had compiled data of as many as 3,000 people from among the British, French and Portuguese inhabitants from the burial grounds of Thalassery, Kannur and Mahe alone, another finding seem to be throwing light on a separate group which had thrived in the town during the colonial period.

According to N.R. Ajayakumar, a tourist guide, the cemetery attached to the St. John's Anglican Church in Thalassery has three tombstones with a compass structure, possibly pointing to the existence of the Freemasonry guild in Thalassery during the colonial era.

It was a foreign tourist who had mentioned the peculiarity of the shape of the tombstones which are quite unseen in other cemeteries, Mr. Kumar says.

The three epitaphs reveal the years of the passing away of the persons as 1869, 1874 and 1917.

A study revealed the existence of the secret group during those days which has led to the discovery of the tombs, he adds.

The church, rebuilt after the intervention of the Department of Archaeology in 2009, was handed over to the Church of South India. The cemetery attached to the church was found to be the burial ground of many influential men of those days. Amidst the tombs of Sir Edward Brennen, the sole contributor for establishing Government Brennen School, and Murdoch Brown, whose name is often quoted with the ‘cake history' of the town, lay the three tombs which stand out with their unique shape, while another similar structure can be found only in Ooty, Mr. Kumar says.

Enduring the colony rule of four invaders and attaching to itself their unique cultural aspects, the town seem to be secretly holding in its grasp amazing facts.
