Chandy lays stone for DM group medical college

KOZHIKODE, APRIL 9:
The Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, has laid the foundation stone for the medical college of DM group at Meppadi in Wayanad district.

The DM Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences, being set up by DM Education and Research Foundation, part of DM Healthcare group, is coming up on 50 acres of land. The Rs 250-crore project is designed as a comprehensive academic medical campus, providing graduate and post-graduate courses and research facilities in medicine, dental, nursing, pharmacy, paramedical and associated subjects.

The first phase of the project, consisting of medical college and a 700-bed hospital, will have a total built-up area of 12 lakh square feet. The hospital is scheduled to be ready by June this year and the medical college is expected to be ready to take in the first batch of students by August 2013.

DM Healthcare group is headquartered in Dubai and has operations in West Asia and India. The DM network now comprises more than 125 establishments, providing primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare, treating more than 20,000 patients daily.

Dr Azad Moopen, chairman of the group, said that the existing doctor-population ratio in Wayanad was 1:1,600. The hospital will also cater to the healthcare needs of people from the neighbourhood districts in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The hospital will provide subsidised and free treatment to the needy. The group is also planning to set up a ‘not for profit' cancer centre with radiation oncology and a dialysis centre within the campus.

According to Dr Moopen, the institute will be the first medical campus in India designed on ‘green building' concept, complete with a botanical garden in a resort ambience. The academic block will have a simulation laboratory, lecture halls and e-library, residential facility for at least 80 per cent of the staff and students, food court and shopping centres.

India’s first domestic animal adaptation centre at Wayanad
Quote:
Kerala veterinary and animal sciences university (KVASU) will soon sign a memorandum of understanding with the central public works department (CPWD) to set up country's first centre to study adaptation of domestic animals to climate change.

The centre for animal adaptation to environment and climate change is coming up at KVASU campus at Pookode, Wayanad, at an estimated cost of Rs 2.4crores provided by the Central government. Dr K Jalaludheen, Director and Research told ToI, "The animal adaptation centre, which is coming up at Pookode is the first adaptation centre, which is exclusively dedicated to domestic animals, in India. We will sign MoU with CPWD soon and the inauguration of the foundation laying will be held within a month."

The behavioural pattern, productivity and physiological changes in domestic animals will be studied here by placing the animals in a climate chamber. The centre will test the effects of oscillating environment condition on animals and for this purpose temperature variations and humidity will be created in the enclosure, he said.

"It is necessary to find out how domestic animals can cope up with the changing climate scenarios. This can be done only with this study. How can we economise animal production in this changing scenario is the ultimate objective of the study", Jalaludhin said.

Domestic animals- cows, dogs, cats and other animals -will be placed in the climate chambers to study its behavioural pattern.

Gateway plans more hotels in Kerala

KOCHI, DEC. 9:
Targeting the growing corporate business travellers, The Gateway Hotels and Resorts plans to open more Gateway brands in Kerala, especially in Thrissur, in the near future.

Already having eight properties in Kerala under both Gateway and Vivanta brands, the ninth one is coming up in Kochi’s IT hub, Kakkanad, by next year, P.K.Mohankumar, Chief Operating Officer, The Gateway Hotels and Resorts, said.

Kerala has the potential for more business hotels and the Taj Group also plans to open its Gateway brands in the northern hill district of Wayanad as well as in Kollam, in down south region, he told Business Line.

He was in Kochi in connection with the launch of Sian, a new pan Asian restaurant at The Gateway Hotel, at Marine Drive here.

In future, he said The Gateway brand will be operated under a management contract with technical and management expertise from the Taj Group. The investing pattern of the Taj hotel brands is also undergoing a change in tune with the times with its brand alone playing a significant role in the asset.

He also called upon the State Government to make Kerala a 365 day destination like in Goa. The State should promote its offseason through ayurveda preventive health care packages during monsoon to attract domestic tourists.

For this, Mohankumar suggested rationalisation of airport taxes and ground handling charges in airports to make Kerala destinations more competitive. In Goa, 80-90 per cent of its hotel occupancy is during off season especially from domestic tourists.

“This can be replicated in Kerala under a tax review by the government to make hotel business more competitive, he suggested. The State also needs world class convention centres to attract international medical conferences, he added.

To a question, he said Kerala’s tourist arrivals, both domestic and overseas, have registered a 15-20 per cent decline this year which should be a matter of concern to the state’s tourism sector. The Kerala market mainly depends on arrivals from the European destinations, he said.

He attributed the economic slowdown in Europe and spurt in India’s domestic air fares due to Kingfisher Airlines issues as the mains reasons for this. The domestic air fares had registered a 30 per cent rise compared to last year, he added.

Mohankumar, who is also the member of Federation of Hotels and Restaurants Association, said that FHRA has been appealing to the Government to grant infrastructure status to the hotel industry because of high cost of development of hotels. If incentives are offered, capacity addition in this sector will happen, he added.

Both the central and state governments should also provide incentives to the industry considering its role in generating more employment opportunities in the country, he said, adding that there is also a need to recognise the hotel industry in India as a ‘mainline economic activity’

As per my understanding, both Sulthan Bathery and Mananthavady are very large in size, and also contains 2-3 villages. We need "One Village, One Panchayat" policy. Also rural areas can be separated and form Municipality for urban/suburban areas of Sulthan Bathery and Mananthavady.

Both Mananthavady and Sulthan Bathery are larger panchayats.

In Kerala, average size of a panchayat is 10-20 sq km or/and 10000-25000 population. That is the best size of good administration. Exceptions are Mananthavady, Sulthan Bathery, Athirapally, Ayyampuzha, Kuttampuzha, Adimaly, Munnar, Devikulam, Kumily, Seethathode, Thannithode, Aruvappulam, Aryankavu, etc. These panchayats are very large in size. Kuttampuzha panchayat is even larger than Muvattupuzha taluk. Kumily panchayat is larger than combined size of Cherthala, Ambalapuzha and Karthikapally taluks. Seethathode panchayat is larger than Tiruvalla and Mallapally taluks put together.

I will do an analysis which focus on Mannthavady and Sulthan Bathery.

Mananthavady:

Area: 80.1 sq.km
Population: 38,000

Mananthavady Panchayat consists of 2 villages - Mananthavady and Payyampally. Payyampally village can be seperated and a new panchayat can be formed here. Mananthavady village area can become municipality.

http://lsgkerala.in/mananthavadypanc...l-information/

http://panchayatdirectory.gov.in/adm...5002&rlbtype=V

Sulthan bathery:

Area: 103.22 sq.km
Population: 36,000

Sulthan Bathery Panchayat consists of 3 villages - Sulthan Bathery, Kidangad and Kuppadi. Kidangad and Kuppadi villages can be seperated and a new panchayats can be formed here. Sulthan Bathery village area can become municipality.

EoIs invited for feeder airport at PANAMARAM Wayanad

Quote:
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 14:
Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) has invited expressions of interest for consultancy for a proposed feeder airport at Wayanad in northern Kerala.

This follows invitation of EoIs for a similar project in Idukki district, and in keeping with the policy that envisages an airport at the headquarters of each of the 14 districts in the State.

FASTER MODES

The proposed international airport in Kannur and private sector KGS Aranmula International Airport in Pathanamthitta have already got ‘in-principle’ approval from the Centre.

Expression of Interest is now invited for ‘techno economic feasibility and environmental impact assessment’ for proposed airport at Wayanad, sources said.

Demand for faster modes of passenger transportation to Wayanad has been on the rise, thanks to steadily increasing domestic and international tourist flow, and rapid growth of business/ trading commuters.

Feeder aircraft services to Wayanad and back from the present domestic and international airports in the State and from important centres such as Mysore and Bangalore have been conspicuous by absence.

SITE IDENTIFIED

As per preliminary feasibility study by Airports Authority of India, the site identified at Panamaram, Wayanad, has been found suitable for the project.

It is envisaged to operate aircraft of capacity up to 50-60 passengers such as ATR-72, to start with, and those of capacity equivalent to Airbus 320, at a later stage.

CENTRAL POLICY

It is part of the Centre’s policy to build small airports across the nation to connect small towns to main air routes and airports, sources said.

Small airports and regional airlines are also the core theme of State Perspective Civil Aviation Plans (SPCAP) the Centre had asked State Governments to prepare a year ago.

At the behest of the Civil Aviation Ministry, many States have already started setting up small airports. Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh ahead in this respect.

At least 11 small airports are at different stages of implementation in Gujarat, sources added.

Feeder airport proposed in Wayanad

The Kerala government has proposed to set up a feeder airport in the tourism-oriented Wayanad district.

The Airports Authority of India had suggested a 100-hectare site at Panamaram, Nadavayal village. The government plans to construct the airport in the public-private partnership mode.

The Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) has been entrusted with the techno, economic feasibility study and environment impact assessment of the project. Knight Frank India Limited has been appointed to prepare the techno economic feasibility report and the environment impact assessment. Both the reports will be submitted in six months and the government will take further measures, a KSIDC release said.

The airport is aimed at boosting the connectivity to the district, which has several tourism spots. The airport will enhance the tourists inflow to the district. At present, Wayanad is connected only through roads. Feeder airport will offer connectivity to the nearest international airports like Kochi and Kozhikode. The government also plans to have other supplementary infrastructure facilities in the area to stimulate economic activity in the backward district, which has the highest adivasi population in Kerala.
