Three airstrips to be set up soon: Minister

Staff Reporter
KOCHI: Minister for Excise and Ports K. Babu has said that taking the State to the forefront in aviation is one of the main targets of the UDF government.

Talking at a reception accorded to him at the Chavara Culture Centre here on Monday, Mr. Babu said that the government has plans to set up airstrips on an experimental basis initially at Pathanamthitta, Wayanad, and Munnar.

The minister said that private participation will be encouraged with the aim of improving the infrastructure in the aviation sector.

Mr. Babu said that a high-level meeting will be held shortly to seriously consider these issues.

Hibi Eden, MLA, was also accorded a reception at the function. Actor Charuhasan inaugurated a seminar on tourism. Mr. Babu distributed certificates to students of the IATA/UFTAA Foundation Diploma Course.

Earlier, speaking at a reception organised at the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies here, Mr. Babu urged the scientific community to probe the reasons for the decline of fish wealth in the water bodies of the State.

He said that the dwindling catch was affecting the livelihood of fishermen of the State.

There were also reports of fall in catch from Vembanad Lake and pollution can be one of the factors affecting the fish wealth, he said.

Hundreds of houseboats are operating in the Lake which are dumping the waste into the water body.

I wonder the nessecity of a runway strip, when an airport itself is planned in Aranmula...... Unlike previous govt, this govt is open for private proposals and hope they clear for Aranmula airport, rather wasting money for a simple strip

GKSF to lure pilgrims

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Extensive campaigns are to be launched within in Kerala and in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra to attract pilgrims arriving in the State during the fifth season of the 45-day Grand Kerala Shopping Festival (GKSF) commencing in December, a press release said here on Monday.

The festival authorities, it said, are working on plans to attract those arriving at major pilgrim centres such as Sabarimala.

Campaigns will be taken up en route these places to publicise the prizes that await shoppers and the refund of value-added tax and other concessions offered during the festival.

The release said those running shops on either side of the roads leading to Pampa would be made aware of the festival's potential, and attractive packages would be tailor-made for enrolling them as GKSF members. The authorities were working on a prize scheme for pilgrims attending the shopping festival. Leaflets giving details of the festivalwould be distributed through the check-posts, the first entry point of pilgrims to the State.

This is a good move to establish bus terminal at Pta. I must say, Aranmula MLA Sivadasan Nair deserves applause for this. I used to listen to the debates/discussions organized by various channels during the election time.
Sivadasan nair had said that the previous Govt. turned a blind eye towards his request for a modern Bus terminal at the district HQ.

Rather than that Aranmula project, if the Govt. makes initiatives and invite NRIs to invest in the proposed mini-airport project in Pathanamthitta, as part of its efforts to establish small airports in all the districts which are not directly connceted by air, that will be the best option. Govt. can take investors into confidence. I am sure, more NRIs will come forward

Swami Ayyappan Road work to be over soon

Road to be widened to 2.5 metres

Development work on the Pampa-Marakkoottom road leading to Sabarimala Sannidhanam is under way at Pampa. Jolly Ullas, Executive Engineer of the Travancore Devaswom Board, told The Hindu that the work would be completed in three weeks. The Thiruvananthapuram-based Subrahmaniyam Trust had sponsored the road development project estimated at Rs.1.15 crore.

He said the proposal was to widen the Swami Ayyappan Road to 2.5 metres. The road would be concreted so that materials for aravana, appam and other articles for prasadom preparation, annadanam, could be transported easily. The original proposal was to widen the road to five metres at an estimated cost of Rs. 4 crore.

Mr. Ullas said the road work was launched only after the iron girders for the Bailey bridge under construction at the Sannidhanam were transported. The work on the 240-metre long diversion road-cum-Bailey bridge linking Sannidhanam with the Chandranandan Road was fast progressing.

The diversion road had been designed as a combination of ramp and steps to ease congestion at the Sannidhanam during the pilgrimage season. The Travancore Devaswom Board had also decided to open an additional ‘prasadom' distribution complex near Malikappuram so that pilgrims returning from ‘darshan' need not wait at the lower ‘tirumuttom' to buy ‘prasadom'.

The Chennai-based Pithavadiyan and Partners has designed the diversion road estimated at Rs.122 lakh. Mr. Ullas said the improvement of the road network and vehicle parking lots at Nilackal base camp would begin soon.
