Nod for tourism circuit project

Quote:
In a major boost to the ambitious Kalady-Malayattoor-Athirappally tourism circuit project mooted by the Department of Tourism, the government has given its administrative sanction for the preparation of a detailed master plan of the circuit at an estimated cost of `44 lakh.

The department will soon call bids to identify suitable agencies for the preparation of the master plan within a month’s time.

“Once the formalities are completed, the agencies which would be entrusted with the responsibility will complete the master plan within six months,” said M S Venugopal, Deputy Director (Planning), Tourism Department.

Widening of roads and integrated infrastructure development of the tourist sites will be included in the master plan. The aim is to provide all infrastructure facilities required by tourists within such destinations and circuits in an integrated holistic manner.

Venugopal said the project to connect Kalady, Malayattoor and Athirappally as a tourism circuit was taken up considering the huge tourism as well as pilgrimage potentials of three of Kerala’s prime areas.

The term ‘tourism circuit’ stated in the guidelines of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, means a route which connects at least three major tourist destinations such that none of them are in the same town, village or city. However, at the same time, they are not separated by a long distance.

“The circuit will have well-defined entry and exit points. A tourist who enters at the entry point should get motivated to visit all the places identified on the circuit.

“The objective of having a tourist circuit is to increase the total number of visits to all the destinations on the circuit and to provide to the tourist attractions of all the destinations located on the circuit,” the guidelines stated.

Kalady has been identified as a popular Hindu religious destination in Ernakulam district, which also draws pilgrims to the Sringeri Mutt.

Malayattoor, also in Ernakulam, is an important Christian pilgrimage centre which houses Malayattoor Church and St Thomas Church inviting local, national and international visitors.

Athirappally in Thrissur district is a scenic combination of forests and little streams and is famous for its waterfalls.

Kerala Tourism to launch global ad campaign ‘Great Backwaters’ this month. The campaign will feature aerial photographs of the backwaters

Quote:

Kerala Tourism is set to launch a global campaign to catapult the state’s backwaters into the league of the Grand Canyon and the Great Wall of China as an once-in-a-lifetime experience. A high-profile advertisement (ad) in the national and international media as well as the social networking websites is the highlight of the ‘Great Backwaters’ campaign that will have its inaugural run later this month. The campaign features the first-of-its-kind, high quality aerial photographs of the backwaters. It is also one among the largest aerial still photography projects ever undertaken in the state, as per a release. “The backwaters of Kerala are not about houseboats alone,” said A P Anilkumar, Minister for Tourism, Government of Kerala. “It is about discovering a fascinating water world unlike any other on our planet,” he added.

The campaign was conceptualised and created by Stark Communications, which handles Marketing and Communications for Kerala Tourism. The three key geographical features of the backwaters—islands, river networks and lakes— will be highlighted in the campaign through aerial photography. For digital marketing of the campaign, Kerala Tourism will launch a micro-site, www.greatbackwaters.com.

Kerala Tourism expects the Great Backwaters campaign to significantly increase the number of both foreign and domestic visitors to the state. “Many countries are bestowed with great reserves of water, but there is none as gifted as Kerala where nature’s most amazing resource creates a magical world for the visitor. It is a world of astounding visual beauty, abundant flora and fauna and a vibrant cultural life,” Anilkumar added.

The unique images of the backwaters were captured for the campaign by advanced cameras secured in a highly sophisticated and custom designed eight-rotor helicam. The aerial shoot was controlled from a customised boat, equipped with a miniature helipad to facilitate the take off and landing of the helicam. The different shoot locations were identified during a reconnaissance helicopter flight prior to the actual shoot. The print campaign will begin to appear in international and national magazines by the beginning of next month.

“Kerala is blessed with 44 rivers and a network of canals and lakes stretching from one end of the state to the other,” said Suman Billa, Secretary, Kerala Tourism. “Here in our backwaters, the primordial relationship between mankind and water comes alive like nowhere else. Whether it is the canal networks, floating markets, houseboats, snake boat races or a whole way of life that thrives around water, this is a miracle of nature that will captivate the world.” he added.

The idea of the campaign traces its origin to the “fascinating water world experience” narrated by the visitors to Kerala, who discovered life and culture in all its different, interesting forms at play in this vast, self-sustaining world, stated the release. The aerial perspective of the campaign was particularly chosen to capture the planet-like largeness and the diversity of life in the backwaters. “As one of the vital elements of brand Kerala, the backwaters deserve a special campaign to showcase their vast potential as a leading international attraction,” said S Harikishore IAS, Director, Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala. “We felt that an innovative perspective like this is definitely needed to draw the attention of the evolved international traveller to this ‘waterworld’,” he added.

The 25-member crew which shot across the backwaters was led by renowned aerial photographer Ville MJ Hyv÷nen from Finland’s capital and Shelton Pinheiro, Creative Director, Stark Communications. Hyv÷nen’s team has carried out aerial photography projects in several international destinations, including the Middle East, Europe, Asia and South America earlier.

Panel suggests relocation of Punnamada waterdrome

Quote:
The expert committee constituted by the state government to study the objections raised by the fishing community regarding the seaplane service has suggested relocating the landing and take-off zone and waterdrome at Punnamada to an area with the least fishing activities.

Tourism department officials have agreed to the location and informed the venue to Kairali Aviation managing director K R Sashikumar. The committee has asked the government to conduct test flights at various locations so that it can study the impact first-hand. The seaplane operator has agreed to conduct the test flight for study, provided the government pays for fuel, pilot fees and other charges.

The committee, which held its first meeting on August 27, had promised to present its report within a month. A committee member said it had been trying to resolve the issues amicably but the stakeholders had not been co-operating with it. "Two weeks ago, we sent out an invitation to T J Anjelose, president of the Kerala State Fish Workers Federation ( AITUC), T Peter and other union leaders to meet at a city hotel but it was a no show. We conducted the site visits and wish to discuss the matter with the stakeholders before submitting the report," the member said.

The committee had requested for a test flight at Punnamada and Astamudi lake, which is likely to happen in the first week of November. "I am losing precious flying time as the aircraft has been grounded at Kochi airport and I am really looking forward to start the service," Sashikumar said. Maintaining that he had suffered a loss of Rs 1.5 crore, Sashikumar said he hoped that the plane would be allowed to take off by November, just in time for the tourist season, failing which he would consider leasing out the aircraft to another company in Mumbai for seaplane operations.
