AFAIK, a cinema house is called Multiplex not because of the number of 'screens' or theatres in the complex; but because of projection technology. We had complexes having multiple theatres even from 1980s, say like SL theatres of Trivandrum having four theatres with some 3000-3500 seats.

I have not got the patience to learn/understand the 'Multiplex' projection technology fully, which was explained by kannan infratech some time back in some TN threads. One difference is that a multiplex screen will be showing two different films one after the other, which cannot be done easily done in a normal screen of a multi theater complex. There, each screen will be showing the same film.

Multiplex simply means high quality movie experience with high ticket rate

I don't think it does matter now when all movies are distributed digitally even in C class theaters in rural villages. If two single theaters have digital projectors they have same advantage as old reel based multiplexes. They can swap the movie easily between or show same movie in two theaters.

That is how some recent wide releases happened in Malayalam movies. For first day first few shows were shown in all theaters in normal theater complexes. From second day onwards it was reduced to single screen.

Ya, this is normally happening in Savita film city. First day they are showing big hyped movies in 4-5 screens then reduced to 1-2 screens according to rush and opinion.

Anyway new type of theatres are good for viewers.

I don't know about any multiplex under construction to open in just a few months. I don't believe that news report. Media writes any thing these days.

You got it wrong. If you are saying this based on wiki search, see this.

Multiple Theatres is not Multiplex (Wiki is wrong).

Multiplex is different from conventional cinema halls. In Multiplexes, same movie can be shown in multiple theatres with few minutes intervals using the same film rolls. There is no fixed movie in fixed hall. Depending on the crowd / pre booking, authorities can change even at the last minute..

Now most of the theaters including C class theaters in Kerala uses digital projectors. Film rolls have disappeared. Not sure about new multiplexes but why should they use film rolls when C class "olappuras" use digital projectors. Normal theater complexes now show same movie in multiple theaters during initial crowded days using this technology.

As Pavamdoha said the example of Savita film city in Kannur where they show same movie in four screens and later reduce the screens when crowd decreases. This is happening in most of the theater complexes. See how Casanovva and Kind&Commissioner released in 200+ theaters with 3-4 theaters even in B centers. This wouldn't have happened in olden days when film rolls were sent to each theater. Number of centers were reduced drastically in few days after release. They would have lost a huge amount if film rolls were used.

I did some research on this..
In theatre complex there are multiple screens each acting like independent theaters with own control over projection.
In multiplex its actually "threading" of a film into various screens with same time or in delayed time typically involving a video server. So its more like some guys sitting in a room and running same video file on various screens at various times. So technically its much different. Also screens would be normally superior in mulitplexes and so does sound system.

Projection technique in multiplex would be mandatory the standard digital movie format D-Cinema. But in normal theatres it can be other forms of digital formats too.

Yes, almost all theaters including C class theaters in Kerala uses digital projectors.

In Attingal Ganga complex, which have 3 screens, Casanovva was released in 1 screen only. But because of the huge rush, they added 1 more screen, by replacing "Spanish massala".

Same happened in SL comples during the release od Velayutham. Switching b/w films is easy and is happening in so many theaters in Kerala, even though each theatre have there own control center.
