Government hospitals to have audio-testing facility

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy announced here on Tuesday that facilities for audio-testing would be set up in all government medical colleges and district hospitals.

He was chairing a conference convened to discuss a project for providing cochlear implants to all aurally challenged infants.

The conference decided to form a 12-member committee to carry out the cochlear project aimed at restoring hearing and speech in aurally challenged children. The committee would have six representatives of doctors, four of the government, one of Social Security Mission and MLA Benny Behnan as members. The committee would prepare the details for early detection and treatment of the children and their training. The treatment would be most effective if done before the children turned three.

Mr. Chandy congratulated playback singer K.J. Yesudas who had brought the proposal to the notice of the government. Mr. Yesudas said that the project was about sharing one's fortunes with others. Social Welfare Minister M. K. Muneer said that one among 1,000 children would require the treatment.

Though only children aged below three were to be treated now, other children would also be considered if the treatment would be effectiveMr. Chandy added that the government proposed to bring world-class medical care to the poor. An insurance scheme would be implemented for this purpose, he said. Ministers K. M. Mani, K. Babu and Adoor Prakash also attended the conference besides Mr. Behnan and officials.

Kerala healthcare model may be copied nationwide

The Kerala model in palliative care may be replicated nationwide. A discussion note, prepared by the India office of the World Health Organisation and the health ministry, has identified Kerala as the country’s only state that has a palliative care policy in line with WHO’s public health approach in this area.

The note points out that the slender southern state, with three per cent of the country’s population, houses two-thirds of a total of nearly 500 palliative care centres in India.

Community mobilisation and involvement of the local self-government institutions have led to the success of the state’s palliative care institutions, the note says, hailing the Kerala model.

Saatchi & Saatchi Health to handle three Birla Wellness brands

The agency will handle Rebirth, Evolve Medspa and Birla Kerala Vaidyashala. Previously, Network Advertising was handling the creative duties for these brands.

Saatchi & Saatchi Health, part of the Publicis Healthcare Communications Group (PHCG), has won three brands under the Birla Wellness umbrella. Specifically, the agency will handle Rebirth, Evolve Medspa and Birla Kerala Vaidyashala (BKV).

Part of Birla Research and Lifesciences (BRLS), Rebirth is a combination of a spa and a store selling 100 per cent natural skin, hair and nutrition products. For this part of the account, the assignment for the winning agency includes handling the various product sub-brands under the umbrella of Rebirth, such as Chant and Nutrinext.

Evolve Medspa -- part of Birla Pacific Medspa, a joint venture of the Yash Birla Group and Pacific Healthcare -- specialises in cosmetic dermatology, cosmetic and plastic surgery, general and specialist dentistry and Maxillofacial prosthetics.

Lastly, Birla Kerala Vaidyashala, an Ayurveda therapy chain across Mumbai and South India, specialises in treating various lifestyle and chronic health disorders.

The development is the result of a multi-agency pitch process that took place in Mumbai. The agency's Mumbai office will handle the business.

The mandate for these brands has moved from Network Advertising.

Addressing the acquisition, Malavika Harita, chief executive officer, Saatchi & Saatchi Health, says, "This is a huge win for us, and we are looking forward to partnering with Birla Wellness to make these very unique brands 'love marks' in a rapidly evolving health and wellness market."

N Venkat, chief executive officer and managing director, Birla Wellness says, "We believe Saatchi & Saatchi Health brings the right mix of knowledge and freshness to this very important foray of the Yash Birla Group into a new sector which is not only expanding, but more importantly, becoming top of mind for a number of discerning consumers."

Venkat adds that his team has been closely monitoring the rapidly growing trend of health consciousness and a shift towards natural products and treatments for the past few years.

The Birla Wellness Group is a part of the Yash Birla Group which is an INR 30 Billion conglomerate of over 20 diversified companies, ranging from established sectors such as auto and engineering, textiles and chemicals, and power and electrical to emerging sectors such as wellness, lifestyle, education and IT. Currently, the group has 10 listed entities in India.

Mr Nair has called upon the Travancore Devaswom Board to provide space for parking the self-contained mobile cardiac care unit beside the Ayyappa Medical Centre at Pampa itself.
According to him, the AIMS-run Ayyappa Medical Centre at Pampa will have an Intensive Care Unit-cum-Cardiac Care Unit, emergency treatment room, clinical laboratory, X-ray unit and advanced ambulances with CCU and ventilator.

The number of patients visiting the centre during the five-day monthly puja period has been recorded at 500 during the past three months, he said.
He said AIMS had spent Rs 45 lakhs for running the Ayyappa Medical Centre at Pampa during the previous pilgrim season, besides Rs 2 lakh each for operating the centre during the five-day monthly puja period every month.

Health portal to be launched soon

DM Foundation, a charity wing of the DM Healthcare, a leading healthcare conglomerate operating in India as well as in the West Asian countries is launching an exclusive health-related Malayalam portal. Making a pre-launch announcement of the venture, chairman of the DM Healthcare and MIMS Azad Moopen said here on Saturday that the portal would be launched by the health minister Adoor Prakash in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.
Stating that the portal was designed and completed after a series of field studies and exhaustive researches, Dr. Moopen said that it would offer a whole lot of novel features to the users. He maintained that long years of experience in the field of medical service had come quite handy for the foundation in setting up healthcare portal. “That we are a group basically involved in the healthcare service for the last several years has given us a great edge in realising this project quite professionally,” said Dr. Moopen.
In-depth information on all major ailments, lifestyle related contents, ‘ask-the-doctor’ service as well as job and career opportunities in the medical fields across the country and abroad are some of the key features of the portal according to him. “In addition, celebrities will also be sharing their health and beauty secrets with the public through the portal,” said Irfan Habeeb, executive editor of the portal, who also was present on the occasion.

Work on health care projects for district under way

Work on comprehensive health care schemes for the district to be implemented as projects in the 12th Five Year Plan is on.
An official press release here said a preliminary workshop for conceiving the schemes to be included in the Plan was conducted here recently. The preliminary workshop was for presidents/chairpersons of local bodies and standing committees.
The press release, issued by the Information and Public Relations Department here, said the district-level projects would be prepared on the basis of projects drawn up at grama/block/district panchayat and municipal levels that would take into account the specific health care issues in the district.
The release said the district administration also intended to prepare projects aimed at effective utilisation of funds allocated in the Plan.
Among the proposals to be included as special health care schemes were those aimed at controlling lifestyle diseases, on palliative care, eradication of mosquito-borne diseases, geriatrics, health care of migrant workers, and health awareness.
The workshop discussed programmes aimed at strengthening national health care schemes and preparing projects for cancer control, tobacco control, and for the health care of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
In the allied sector, the projects being planned included those for drinking water supply, waste disposal, rodent control, and biogas plants.
The district-level workshops for officials would be held under the aegis of the District Medical Officer and the District Collector in the coming days. Workshops would also be held at block and panchayats levels in the subsequent days.
The district-level project document was proposed to be submitted on November 10, the release said.
