Chasing a different game

SHABANA MANSOOR
SHARE · PRINT · T+
It was in the recent past that the game of cricket came to be a rage for the average Malayali.

Football lovers were here aplenty and every corner of Malabar used to wake up to the sounds and sight of football.

But the town of Thalassery was different. This little piece of land took the lead in ushering in another game into its culture. The initial dose of cricket was administered by Lord Arthur Wellesley, probably in the 1800s, for the British soldiers. The rich man's game turned out to be the layman's passion here. The first cricket club in the town was believed to be formed in 1860 under the name Tellicherry Town Cricket. The club played host to the famous English cricketer Colin Cowdrey whose father was a tea planter in Thalassery.

40 cricket clubs

More clubs followed and the town now has 40 cricket clubs. The town and its ground hosted a match between the former cricketers of India and Sri Lanka in 2002. Cricket is a game of all seasons here. Natives of the town have an extraordinary relation with the game, says M. Dhananjayan, vice-president, Cannanore District Cricket Association (CDCA). The town has hosted 23 Ranji trophy matches here. The ongoing Ranji tournament is the second to be played in the new cricket stadium of the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) at Conorvayal since its inception in 2008.

The Thalassery Cricket Academy, formed by the KCA in 2009, has provided coaching to as many as 18 cricketers, and many of them have already appeared in major matches.

A new batch is set to start next year, Mr. Dhananjayan says. Gone are the days when seven out of the eleven players in the State team used to be from Kannur district, he says.

Stunts get the adrenaline flowing at Army Mela

Defence Ministry owes special gratitude to Kerala: Antony

The Jawahar Municipal Stadium here was packed on Saturday as thousands of people braved the heat and the sweat to watch stunts by a motorcycle display team, flypast by defence aircraft, skydiving, and performances by Army dogs and horses in connection with an Army Mela held under the aegis of the Army Southern Command.

The police and army personnel deployed at the venue and outside found it difficult to control the crowds. The turnout was well beyond the expectations of the army and the civil authorities.

The mela was inaugurated by Defence Minister A.K. Antony. In his address, he said the Defence Ministry owed a special gratitude to Kerala that accounted for over one lakh soldiers in the defence forces of the country that had 13 lakh personnel.

Promising the people that the services of the defence personnel would be available to them in times of crisis, Mr. Antony said the government was committed to the welfare of ex-servicemen. The welfare activities would be extended to areas such as rehabilitation of retired jawans. He said the government would modernise the armed forces, not to attack anyone, but to defend every inch of the country.

The inaugural function was preceded by a flypast in which three Dornier aircraft of the Indian Coast Guard, three Chetak helicopters, three advanced light helicopters, and one ME-8 of the Indian Air Force took part.

The Meghdoot skydiving team of the elite 50 Independent Para Brigade gave a demonstration of their skills.

It was followed by acrobatics by the Daredevil motorcycle display team from the Signal Centre Corps, Jabalpur, and a demonstration by horse riders from the Army Service Core Centre and College, Bangalore. A band display and cultural programmes were also held. Mr. Antony honoured World War II veterans and war widows, and presented mobility scooters to 17 defence personnel injured during operations.

Exhibition

Major General A.K. Pradhan, General Officer Commanding, Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area, inaugurated an Army exhibition at the Police Parade Grounds here on Saturday as part of the mela.

The expo showcasing modern military weapons and equipment has stalls of 40 regiments and corps from the Southern Army Command, the Indian Navy, Air Force, and the Coast Guard. The exhibits include T-72 and T-90 tanks, armoured personnel carriers, BrahMos missile, Anti-Tank Guided Missile, rocket launchers, various Improvised Explosive Devices, nuclear, biological and chemical warfare suit, artillery guns, and bridging equipment. Grievances relating to Army Group Insurance Scheme, financial assistance admissible to personnel, family and service pensions, and ex-servicemen contributory health scheme are being addressed at the cells set up by the regiments and corps.

“Grievances regarding pensioners' benefits are being addressed at the mela. Nearly 2,000 applications were received by noon and the number is expected to soar up to 10,000 by the end of the mela. Eighty per cent of the issues are provided on the spot settlement while those requiring further references are put on hold,” said Lieutenant Colonel P.B. Aiyappa, Officer-in-Charge, Ex-servicemen.

Major hospitals, including the Pariyaram Medical College, have set up free eye care and medical check-up camps at the venue. There are also stalls of private and public sector banks.

The second edition of Admirals Cup, an international sailing regatta, began with three consecutive races at the Ettikulam Bay in the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, in the district on Saturday.

Cadet Akshit Kaushal of the INA won the first race, while Cadet Al Naeemi and Midshipman Al Habsi from United Arab Emirates (UAE) won the second and third races respectively.

The event, where trainees from the naval academies of friendly foreign countries compete, was inaugurated by Vice-Admiral Anurag G. Thapliyal, INA Commandant on December 9.

Twelve teams from Brazil, Italy, Mauritius, the U.K., Maldives, Egypt, Bangladesh, UAE and Sri Lanka are taking part in the event.

An 11-day Swadeshi festival, featuring an array of indigenous products, and training programmes for promoting the production and use of Swadeshi products, began here on Monday.

The festival being organised by the Gandhi Centre for Rural Development (GCRD) in association with the Payyannur Yuva Vikas Kendra was inaugurated by Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan at the Mahatma Mandiram here.

The festival includes exhibition of home-made products, training programmes, and seminars on various aspects of Swadeshi philosophy.

Apart from food products, including squash, syrup, jam and so on, soap products, liquid soap, hair oil, shampoo, incense sticks, candles, and herbal and Ayurvedic items are available.

According to the organisers, the festival is organised with the aim of popularising the Swadeshi concept, which would help people escape economic dependence on external market forces and assist rural community to attain economic self-reliance. The exhibition of the products is also meant to give first-hand information to the people of the Swadeshi philosophy, they said.

The major attraction of the festival is training programmes in the manufacture of consumer products. Training will be imparted in jewellery making (December 12-14); soap making (December 15-17); fabric and glass painting (December 18-20); and consumer products making (December 21 and 22).

Agro-industrial fair in Kannur

To provide marketing facilities to small and micro units in the district
A fair of agricultural and industrial products made by small entrepreneurs in the district will be organised here from December 22 to January 1 by the district panchayat in connection with Christmas as part of its scheme to provide marketing facilities to small and micro units in the district.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Tuesday, district panchayat president K.A. Sarala said that Rural Development Minister K.C. Joseph would inaugurate the fair at the Police Maidan at 2 p.m. on Thursday. She said that such fairs organised during festival seasons were among the major welfare schemes being implemented by the panchayats to help small entrepreneurs who were not equipped to compete with big manufacturing companies.

Quality products

Mr. Sarala said that such fairs had to a certain extent been able to check cheap and poor quality products including Chinese items being sold in the market in large numbers. The festival season fairs had emerged as a source of hope for small entrepreneurs, she added.

As many as 96 stalls would be arranged at the fair. The anticipated sales turnover from the fair is Rs.1 crore.

The products of Kudumbasree units, women's industrial units, industrial cooperative societies, Regional Agro-Industrial Development Co-operative of Kerala Ltd., Kerala State Rubber Co-operative Ltd., Kerala Soaps and units under the Fisheries Department and Agricultural Department as well other small entrepreneurs would be on sale at the stalls.

The items to be marketed in the fair would include dress materials, curry powder, pickles, soaps, seeds, planting materials, earthenware, and Ayurveda products.

She said the district panchayat had allocated Rs.21 lakh in the district panchayat's annual plan for 2011-12 for holding the fairs during Onam, Ramzan, Christmas, New Year, and Vishu seasons. The District Industries Centre was in charge of holding the fair, she added.
96 stalls will be set up at the fair

Kannur band rocks with Sanskrit

Can you imagine an ancient Sanskrit scripture presented as a heavy metal rock song? This is exactly what Kannur-based band, The Down Troddence, popularly known as TDT has done with their latest single, Shiva.

It features Sanskrit lyrics taken from the traditional Theyyam Thottam Paattu, which marks the beginning of a Theyyam performance and it is believed that the performer of the ritual will be possessed by divine spirits.

“Kannur is known for this art form. We have been listening to these myths from our childhood. We wanted to incorporate our culture into our music,” says Munz, vocalist of the band. The song retells the mesmerising story of Ravana’s penance for Lord Shiva’s blessings. Angered by Shiva’s refusal to respond to his devotion, Ravana plays the shloka featured in the band’s song using a veena made of his intestines.

TDT owes its name to the roots that bind them to Kerala. They were inspired by the incarnation of Shiva as Pulayan, or the downtrodden one, who appeared to test Sree Shankaracharya’s knowledge while he was going to ascend the Sarwanjha Peedham or throne of knowledge.

This is the story that is behind , a tradition that flows through the veins of each of the band members, Rinoy Balan, Varun Raj, Nezer Ahmed, Munz, Ganesh Radhakrishnan and Sushin Shyam.

As a prelude to the song Shiva, the band also released an instrumental track Ortniavis (read backwards!) which sends out a simple, yet thought provoking message: “Naangale kotthiyaalum onnalle chora, neengale kotthyalum onnalle chora?” which translates to, “irrespective of who is cut, you or me, the colour of our blood will be the same.”

The video for Shiva has had more than 38,000 views on YouTube and is testament to the fact that The Down Troddence is a force to be reckoned with. Malayalis can get a taste of their music on New Year’s Eve when the band that holds Kannur so dear to their heart performs in their hometown for the first time since the band’s formation in 2007.

The band is excited about playing at home and is overwhelmed by the positive response it received for Beach Blackout, the upcoming show.

An entrance aesthetically designed with bamboo and palm leaves is the first draw. A bigger surprise is the agricultural produce, larger than normal, neatly stacked inside the hall at Polika, the food and agriculture expo.

Agro products from all over Kannur and Kasaragod districts are displayed in around 250 stalls at the expo which is on at Town Square here. The event is being organised by the Thalassery Social Service Society (TSSS), the Agricultural Department and Jeevass, Kasaragod.

A 78-kg tapioca stands out among areca nuts, ginger, and yams of different sizes. Varieties of fruits and allied products such as pickles, jams, squash, syrups and ready-to-cook food products are on sale. Forty items have been made of jackfruit alone.

There are separate stalls for milk and milk products, fisheries, and animal husbandry. Machines used for ploughing, tilling, and harvesting provide the interested visitor with a comprehensive knowledge about farming.

“Polika, which is being conducted for the third consecutive year, aims at providing a platform for farmers to sell their produce. The public too is encouraged to return to the nature for a balanced life,” said Fr. Mani Melvattom, director, TSSS. It also conveyed the necessity of employing bio-fertilizers for reaping healthy harvests, he added.

A national seminar organised in connection with the expo on ‘food sovereignty and processing of food and natural products' was inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Thursday. The fair will be on till January 8.
