Farewell to INA Commandant

Vice Admiral Anurag G. Thapliyal will be posted to New Delhi

Vice Admiral Anurag G. Thapliyal handed over charge as Commandant, Indian Naval Academy (INA), at a ceremony held at the academy here on Thursday.

At the farewell ceremony, service personnel and trainees bid adieu to the Commandant who reviewed the ceremonial parade, followed by the pulling-out ceremony.

Vice Admiral Thapliyal, after a tenure of two years and five months as the INA Commandant, will take over as Chief of Personnel at the Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Navy), New Delhi.

A press release issued by the INA said Vice Admiral Thapliyal was instrumental in setting up training facilities and infrastructure at the academy. The trainee strength had risen from 240 to the current 750 during his tenure. Various facilities such as waterman-ship training centre, baffle range, interim equitation lines, naval hospital, engineering labs, and language labs were also established in the period. The academy saw many new facets of training being explored and implemented such as institutionalising of Admirals Cup, an international sailing regatta conducted at the INA every year; visits by Indian and foreign delegates; and various exchange programmes with friendly foreign navies.

The largest-ever batch of 240 officer trainees, including 70 women trainees, completed their naval orientation course under the aegis of Mr. Thapliyal in December last. He also steered the INA in conceptualising and planning the academy's second phase, which was recently accorded approval by the Union government, the release said.

Tearful farewell to Azhikode

KANNUR: Sukumar Azhikode was given a tearful farewell by the people here on Wednesday. The body was consigned to flames on the historic Payyambalam beach. Rajesh and Manoj, the nephews of Azhikode, and Suresh, the car driver and constant companion of Azhikode, lit the funeral pyre. The funeral pyre had been kept ready just opposite to the memorials of a row of communist leaders including E K Nayanar.
The body was brought in a procession from the Town Square where it was kept for the public to pay homage from 7.45 am. The cortege was led by politicians and some of the close relatives of Azhikode. Earlier, hundreds of people from different walks of life including politicians, writers and his admirers had turned up to have a last look of him when his body was placed at the Tows Square. The body was kept at the Mahatma Mandiram after it was brought from Thrissur on Tuesday night.
The cremation took place with state honours, sans the ritualistic firing of shots in the sky by cops.

Caught in a spell cast by ghazals

Ghazal-lovers in the town spent a tranquil evening in an unnoticed corner of a large hall listening to a live music concert on Friday.

The ghazal night by Jithesh Sundaram in glowing memory of the late Jagjit Singh was organised by the Lions Club of Kannur.

Ably supported by Iqbal Warsi on violin, Nikhil Ram on flute, Rajesh Bhagwat on tabla, and Raghavendra on rhythm pad, the evening rendered a mood of elation.

Drifting to Jugalbandi at various occasions, the soul-stirring numbers such as ‘Chupke chupke raat din,' ‘Hoton se,' ‘Lazzat-e-gham bada dijiye,' and ‘Rangat teri zulfen' were sung with élan. The two-hours-and-a-half musical extravaganza uplifted the mood of the audience from one of impassiveness to exultation.

Taking the listener into a trance were the smooth shift in numbers, from ‘Hoton se choolon tum,' ‘Tum itna jo muskura rahe ho,' and to ‘Tum ko dekha to yeh khayal aaya,' all immortalised by Jagjit Singh.

Blending the flow meticulously with ‘Suhaag raat hein,' the ‘antara' (Anupallavi) of ‘Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein' from the movie Silsila the singer crafted a musical transition.

Experiments galore

More such experiments followed with the slow shift from ‘Socha nahin acha bura' by Jagjit singh to film numbers like ‘Jo waada kiya woh' and ‘Sau saal pehle'. A medley was also presented with ‘Lazzat -e-gham bada dijiye' and the popular qawwali ‘Jhoom barabar jhoom sharabi' with equal flair. The fine nuances of violin could not be any better when supplemented with the lines ‘Paimane ka dil toot jaye' from ‘Rangat teri zulfen' penned by Naseem Akhtar, as ‘Sone jaise roop hain tera' brought out the best in tabla.

Evoking melancholy, love, and longing, the ghazal night turned out to be a soothing and captivating experience all at the same time.

Pazhassi memorial to come up in Mattannur

KANNUR: If everything goes well, the district will soon have a museum along with a memorial for Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, the legendary ruler of Malabar. The family members of the Pazhassi royal family have agreed to handover the ancestral home, Pazhassi Padinjare Kovilakam, in Mattannur to the state government.

A ministerial level meeting to be held on February 18 will explore the possibility of developing the house as a memorial and museum.

Minister of state for home affairs Mullappally Ramachandran will inaugurate the meeting.

"The history of Pazhassi Raja is the history of resistance against imperialist forces. It is necessary to develop his ancestral home as a memorial," said P K Ravivarma Raja, a member of Pazhassi family and Pazhassi Raja Charitable Trust in a press meet on Thursday. The present ancestral home was built after the British destroyed the earlier one following the siege in 1805, which resulted in the death of Pazhassi Raja.

Though the Mattannur municipality had started the construction of a memorial at Pazhassi nearly five years ago, the work could not be completed. As of now, the only memorial is the Pazhassi Raja tomb in Mananthavady, Wayanad. "This is a great monument, which has some historic importance and it should be preserved by the state government," said K Bhaskaran Master, the vice-chairman of Mattannur municipality, who is also associated with the trust.

Though a project was submitted to the previous LDF government, which had also announced that the Kovilakam would be taken over by the department of tourism, it didn't take off due to technical reasons including the lack of interest on the part of the Pazhassi family.

The trust members have demanded that the upcoming Kannur airport be named after Pazhassi Raja.

Was going through this forum and I am impressed with the things which are happening in Kannur. What Kannur needs is 1 or 2 star hotels so that guests attending seminars, conferences, art festivals etc can have a comfortable stay. A medium sized conference centre would also do good for mid sized ctiy like Kannur.

Dubai: Dunes Cuisine Kannur Veerans lived up to their name — which in Malayalam means ‘brave warriors' — to beat Trotters Wayanad Highlanders and lift the inaugural Capital Kerala Premier League trophy.

Kannur bowled out Wayanad for 88 and, despite losing five wickets, kept their nerve to reach the target with ten balls to spare at the ICC Global Cricket Academy Oval on Friday night.

It was a spectacular finish to one of the finest tournaments ever held in UAE domestic cricket, with thousands turning out for the absorbing final.

Kannur skipper C.T.K. Masoud showed the way with a brilliant opening spell.

KANNUR: The 50-odd nurses in the Speciality Hospital here began an indefinite strike on Sunday demanding salary hike with three months' retrospective effect and better working conditions.

The agitators said that they had given enough time to the hospital management to consider their demand, but the management followed an anti-employee approach by terminating four nursing staff.

On January 18, the registered nursing staff in six hospitals in the district had given notice to the authorities for salary hike. When the managements of the other hospitals agreed to this, the institute gave hike to only a few. As many as 35 nurses didn't get the hike, they alleged.

Following this a strike notice was given on February 8, but the management promised them that their demand would be considered. On February 29, on the day the representatives of the nursing staff in various hospitals in the state were having a discussion with the health minister and labour minister in Thiruvananthapuram, four nursing staff were terminated from here, which provoked them to launch the agitation, said the striking staff.

Nearly 100 nursing staff from other hospitals in the district also joined the agitators expressing solidarity with them.
