Socio-economic and caste census launched

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said that accurate statistics are key to ensuring effective planning and implementation of schemes.

Inaugurating the State-level enumeration for the socio-economic and caste census at a function at the Collectorate Conference Hall here on Tuesday, Mr. Chandy said that planning had been given much importance in the country from the time Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru launched the first Five Year Plan. The Five Year Plans had played a decisive role in the development of the country.

He said correct statistics would make planning more relevant and yield results. Without exact figures and data, the government could not carry out programmes and forecast their future outcome.

Rural Development Minister K.C. Joseph, who presided over the function, said that enumerators had been given tablet computers to carry out their work. Referring to disputes about fixing the line that divided families below and above the poverty line, he said that lack of accurate statistics was an obstacle to the proper implementation of government schemes.

K. Sudhakaran, MP; Sunny Joseph and A.P. Abdullakutty, MLAs; District Collector Rathan Kelkar; and district panchayat president K.A. Sarala were present.

The census done under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Rural Development and the Registrar-General of India, in association with the State governments, is meant to identify the beneficiaries of the 12th Five Year Plan projects and those for the development of urban and rural areas. Bharat Electronics Ltd. has provided the software for enumeration and tablet computers.

DPGMS launched

The Chief Minister also inaugurated the District Public Grievances Monitoring System (DPGMS). The District Collector can use this information technology tool to monitor public grievances, a press release issued at the function said. The National Informatics Centre has developed the software for the web-based application initially deployed in the Collectorate's intranet, the release said. It can be deployed over the Internet in future. The system allows entry of public grievances, issue of acknowledgement receipts, and recording of the Collector's special remarks, monitoring of status, and so on.

INA cadets put skills to test at camp

Focus on building endurance, overcoming obstacles

The idyllic setting of the Indian Naval Academy (INA), with the hillock, the sea and the tranquil Kavvayi backwaters forming a picturesque backdrop, offers the best ambience for a four-day camp held on the campus to inculcate leadership qualities, camaraderie, and team spirit among cadets undergoing training there.

The four-day ‘outward-bound camp,' which included exercises named Rookie, Samudramanthan, Samudrasangram, and Varuna, came to a close on April 14.

As many as 633 trainees of the INA, including 26 women, participated in the camp as they went through the arduous schedule which ranged from land and river navigation in full battle gear to under-stress weapon handling. The trainees undertook a series of exercises including crossing of water obstacles, endurance marches/runs, night navigation, jungle survival, and navigation in inland waterways.

Rookie, Samudramanthan, and Samudrasangaram were aimed at testing the limits of physical and mental endurance of the trainees. Varuna was a purely maritime exercise with focus on developing rowing and sailing skills and developing the spirit of adventure in young naval cadets, a press release issued by the INA said.

The camp concluded with a campfire on the campus. The gruelling training programme did not hamper the festivity and camaraderie of the cadets as they presented a variety of entertainment and cultural programmes to mark the culmination of the camp, the release said.

Vice-Admiral Pradeep Chauhan, INA Commandant, presented trophies and individual prizes to the winners of various competitions.

Midnight gathering of women

The Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP) will organise ‘Pathira Penkoottayma,' a midnight gathering of women, at the Town Square here on Tuesday to mobilise public opinion against gender discrimination.

Programme convener Kamala Surendran said here that the programme was organised to draw attention to the discrimination and atrocities against women in society. Though women were active in professional fields, they were experiencing restrictions on their freedom of mobility, especially in the late hours. Atrocities against women were on the increase in the State, she said.

Cultural programmes, debates and film shows would be held as part of the programme. Women activists K.K. Shylaja, K. Ajitha and Suma Balakrishnan would take part.

NIFT students showcase their creations

23 BF.Tech and 29 B.Des students pass out of Mangattuparamba campus

TRENDY:A student of the National Institute of Fashion Technology-Kannur displaying her creation at the Chamber Hall in Kannur on Friday.

Budding professionals in the fashion world displayed their creative innovations in design reflecting changing scenario and tastes in garmenting and home décor as they presented their projects prepared as part of their courses adapting inputs from the fashion industry.

Creativity of each of the 23 Bachelor of Fashion Technology (BF.Tech) and 29 Bachelor of Textile Design (B.Des) students of the National Institute of Fashion Technology-Kannur (NIFT-Kannur) was on display at the Chamber Hall here as the final year students were passing out after completing their four-year courses on the NIFT campus at Mangattuparamba.

While the BF.Tech students made presentations of their conceptual understanding of apparel manufacturing focussing on garmenting technology, the B.Des students displayed their physical design projects that mirrored the demands in the export and domestic sectors of the apparel and home fashion industry.

The presentation and exhibition gave a glimpse of what is happening in the fashion business, innovations, adaptations and forecasts of changing tastes in domestic and export markets.

The industry provided inputs and suggested areas to be focussed and the students came out with their own innovative findings.

Garmenting sector

“The garmenting sector that requires huge innovation is the beneficiary of the creative inputs of these students,” said Rajesh Kumar Jha, Assistant Professor in the Fashion Technology Department of NIFT here. He said that BF.Tech students focussed on production, software development, merchandising, and quality to keep in sync with the latest practices in the field of garmenting worldwide.

They were equipped to offer technical solutions to the industry, he said adding that some projects were selected as best commercially viable, most innovative, and best graduation ones.

Independent work

The final-year B.Des students, who are to work independently for export houses, gave emphasis on professional inputs in design and development of textiles and raw material.

Pallavi Patke, B.Des student, who exhibited her project featuring German home décor, said she prepared the project in consultation with a textile design firm. Only the design that the buyer accepted would be printed, she said.

“The B.Des students are working in real time in the fashion field,” said Srikanth Gella, Assistant Professor of Textile Design.

He said that textile design was a strategic value-addition that could help fashion business.

Placement

According to NIFT-Kannur authorities, while all the first batch of BF.Tech students who were passing out got placements in different parts of the country, 60 per cent of the final year B.Des students were offered placements.

There are total 250 students studying in the institution now.

The exhibition and presentation were held here under the aegis of the North Malabar Chamber of Commerce and the Kerala Textile Export Organisation.

International horticulture expo begins in Kannur

A large number of stalls featuring a variety of agricultural and horticultural products, farming equipment, and machinery has been put up at the 2nd International Horti Expo that began at the police grounds here on Friday.

Inaugurating the expo, Minister for Agriculture K.P. Mohanan said it was imperative to bring about a change in the attitude of the State which depended on its neighbours for its sustenance. More and more people were venturing into farming as part of self-help groups and Kudumbasree units, and this could be counted as a positive development, he said.

Mr. Mohanan said that by 2015, Kerala would become a State that largely took up organic farming. As many as 29 warehouses with cold-storage facilities would be started across the State. As many as 27 agro-related projects had been approved at the Emerging Kerala summit. A.P. Abdullakkutty, MLA, presided over the inaugural session. K. Sudhakaran, MP; district panchayat president K.A. Sarala; and municipal chairperson M.C. Sreeja were present.

The expo has on display an array of products from across the country, along with those from nations such as Norway, Israel, and the Netherlands.

Anthurium and gerbera plants, seeds of various vegetables from the Netherlands, and greenhouse covering sheets from Israel are some of the products that will interest visitors.

A wide range of products has also been put up by many Union and State government institutions, apart from a host of private firms. The National Horticulture Board has put up an awareness stall for farmers, along with a host of products brought out by its beneficiaries, board officials say. Honey products have been displayed by Kerala State Horticultural Products Development Corporation Ltd. (Horticorp). Vegetable carving by the State Horticulture Mission, Tamil Nadu, and the unique carpet of pulses, grains, vegetables, and fruits arranged by the Kerala State Horticulture Mission are worth having a dekko.

Stalls by the Kerala Kerakarshaka Sahakarana Federation (Kerafed), Kerala Agricultural University, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Agmark, Department of Soil Conservation, Coir Board, Spices Board, and Rubber Board are part of the expo.

Nearly 30 models on display under the theme ‘Samrudha Keralam’ as part of the five-day event depict slices from the State’s cultural and farming past.

An array of products from across the country and abroad are on display at the exhibition.

Kannur Life

Hi friend..,
In my opinion the Kannur life is very good and very attractive.Because, the tourism potential for Kannur district is high. The district itself, which shares much of this natural splendour, has been a key contributor to the cultural, religious, political and industrial heritage of the state. In addition, Kannur also enjoys the credit of having been the cradle of many a colourful folk art and folk music.
