What is the rate of return of Nilambur Nanjangud line?

Do not know the figure as per the new alignment. It was 5.9% as per the old survey.

This study has given the railway babus's a good whip to turn down any requests for more Bangalaore trains from Malabar region.
This Dumbo DMRC has effectively screwed up our region, stating that only the southern part of Kerala State will give money to railway and if ROI is factored for railway projects, its only viable if the Southern Kerala benefits out of it.\Shame on DMRC babus.

More details on DMRC report on Thalassery-Mysore railway.

So now the only hope for railway connectivity to Wayanad is Nilambur-Nanjangud project.

Wayanad Railway (Nilambur-Sulthan Bathery-Nanjangud Railway)

KRDC to discuss the current status and issues in the next board meeting scheduled on 16th May 2017.

Suggestion from Karnataka was to re-align the route so as to avoid National Parks. It was NOT that they asked to shelve the project, as it was hinted earlier. As Wayanad shares border with three districts of Karnataka (Mysore, Chamarajnagar, Coorg), I am confident they will find a route avoiding national parks.

Meanwhile, the opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala raised this issue in the state assembly.

Glad to see senior Congress leaders like M M Hassan and Ramesh Chennithala speaking for Nilambur-Nanjangud rail project. It will not be so easy to shelve this project even if there is pressure from some corners.

Meanwhile, this has become a major political issue in Wayanad and almost all major political parties are currently protesting in one way or the other.

In reality, I think the southern districts will benefit more from this line than Wayanad itself and so I want to see the support and pressure from the people from all districts to the south of Malappuram......

Well, I don't think a railway line terminating in Wayanad will be economically viable. With a population of just 8 lakh, Wayanad on herself may not be able to sustain a railway line.......

Wayanad people should start a mass movement and agitation for Wayanad Railway.

As a person from Central Travancore I will offer my all support.

The alignment should bypass Tamil Nadu as this project is going to implement my Indian Railway-Kerala Govt JV. As of now we can forget Sulthan Bathery-Nanjangude stretch due to the Forest and Bandipore National Park environment issues. The focus should be on Nilambur Road-Kalpatta-Sulthan Bathery Line. As the line passes through Kalpatta, even people from Thamarassery Taluk in Kozhikode district will get benefits as Kalpatta Railway Station will be very near to Thamarassery (Thamarassery-Kalpatta = 43 km and 80-90 mins drive). For Puduppadi to Kalpatta, it will be less than 60 minutes and 33 km.

Alignment: Nilambur Road - Nilambur Town - Akampadam - Erumamunda - Pothukal - Chooralmala - Meppadi - Puthurvayal - Kalpatta - Kainatty (Mananthavady Road) - Muttil - Meenangadi - Krishnagiri - Kolagappara - Beenachi - Sulthan Bathery

This line will bring connectivity to Wayanad from Travancore and South Kerala.

We can directly come by train. It will benefit Wayanad in Tourism and Spices Trade.

And Terminus is located in Sulthan Bathery, not Kalpatta. This will ensure Wayanad to get a longer link which also included two major towns of Kalpatta and Sulthan Bathery and minor towns like Meppadi, Muttil, Meenangadi, and Krishnagiri.

If Karnataka is interested, they can extend this line to Nanjangud from Sulthan Bathery. If TN is interested, they can extend it to Gudalur from Sulthan Bathery.

So the minutes of the meeting held with Karnataka officials on 17th March 2017 indicates that they are in a 'discussion' mode. Also there have been exchanges of maps between Karnataka forest department and DMRC. Somebody thought they can just publicise Karnataka is opposing and then just go ahead and shelve the project?

What is stopping Kerala from going ahead with at least Nilambur-Sulthan Bathery stretch?

It is better to ask for a single railway connection to Mysore. If we ask for Thalassery and Nilambur to connect with Mysore , there is chance that both will get rejected - The problem is Nilambur Line has no benefit from people from Kozhikode to Kasargod. same as the The Mysore Line is useless for people from Southern Kozhikode to Trivandrum.

Best way is:

1. Limiting Nilambur-Nanjangud Line as Nilambur-Kalpatta-Sulthan Bathery
2. Kannur-Kannur Airport-Iritty-Virajpet-Madikeri-Kushalnagara-Hunsur-Belagula/Krishnarajasagara Mysore Line (No forest issue in this line)
