vu3nnn is right. The definition of mall is subjective. Somebody wrote that it is an American derivative for a shopping centre in other places. That is also right. There is no definite definition to it unlike the words 'elephant' or 'coconut'.

The oxford dictionary defines a mall ' a large enclosed shopping area from which traffic is excluded'. The word is of recent origin, definitely after 1960. Before that the meaning of a 'mall' was ' a sheltered walk or promenade'. In other words an explanade or baulevard or avenue.

If we go by the definition of dictionary, a mall can be any shopping space which excludes traffic or in other words, shops which does not have an entry or exit to the traffic of a street.

Otherwise it does not mean a mall should contain such and such shops or such and such entertainments like a multiplex. It can have. But not mandatory.

There is no point in splitting our hair on the meaning of it. Americans have a funny habit of coining new words of their own, varying widely from the English spoken by others. So a public toilet for others is a rest room for Americans. Trousers for others is pants for the Yankees. Ground nut for others is peanuts for them. They never say pork. It is always ham. Never a flat, but apartments. While a British goes on a 'holiday' an American goes on a 'vacation'. So on and so forth.

So the shop of 'Kannettan', where I purchase my grocery, fruits, vegetable and also clothes, and which does not open in to a traffic, is a mall to me.

There could be more malls even before focus. Yea terming "first" maybe difficult thing to do. The point was to make with multiplexes within mall rather than who is first.

Before the "Malls" came all were shopping centres or complex. We dont know how many of them can be easily named as mall that we see today. There could be many. The same example of spencer plaza in chennai, it did not have mall in the tail, but its known as the first or oldest shopping mall in India.

I think the first mall in Kerala is Club 7 at Thiruvalla.

Deepam tower & club 7 , Thiruvalla are malls without cine screens . Or else it could be the first mall in South kerala. Same applies for Bishop Jerome Nagar , Kollam & Carmel Tower & Annas Arcade , Trivandrum . Most OF the so called " Malls'' shown in this thread just matches the size of a club 7 or Carmel tower or Bishop Jerome Nagar with screens added . History made them just shopping complexes .

I dont remember the name of a landmark building in Thiruvalla which has a cap on its top which was built pre 2000s when common mallus never heard the term mall .

Please don't post this fake news. Reliance don't have any mall projects in Kerala. That page itself is fake
