THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As Ammu the Great Indian Hornbill - the mascot of the 35th National Games - turned one on Monday, her birthday present came in the form of word from Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president N Ramachandran who declared that the dates of the much-awaited games will be announced on June 26.

National Games Secretariat CEO Jacob Punnoose said the secretariat has taken into account various factors, including weather, and suggested January-February 2015 as the ideal time to conduct the games in the state.

The 35th National Games will be spread across 530 kilometres at 32 venues in seven districts. Around 1,500 media accreditations are expected to be given out for covering the games.

The duration and regulation of the games will be decided by the IOA and is expected to be held over a period of at least 20 days. Over 90% works have been completed at each venue, barring slow progress at the shooting range and trap and skeet venue, but they too will be ready soon, the CEO said.

Nearly half of the events will be held in Thiruvananthapuram district. Work for the Games Village is nearing completion at Menamkulam. About 365 villa-style buildings are being built at a cost of Rs 12 lakh each. "There was great difficulty in finding the 30 acres required to build the games village which can accommodate up to 5,000 people. Land was finally leased to us by the industries department on a two-year contract, which means the village would be a temporary set up.

In keeping with the promise that the games will be eco-friendly, the housing units can be dismantled and all its parts utilized," said Punnoose. Ammu, the first female mascot of the games, has been touring schools across the state to spread awareness about the games.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Seventeen-year-old Beniston C R from Vizhinjam is a youngster who holds a lot of promise. Having been representing Thiruvananthapuram at various age levels, he is rated by many as a future star.

But little known is that Beniston has had to escape the clutches of alcohol in his childhood. His best years as a player has coincided with his four years at the Kovalam Football Club not by mere chance. Beniston is just one of many from the coastal villages of Vizhinjam, Venganoor and Kovalam whose lives were touched by Kovalam FC and their coach Ebin Rose, a former Kerala Santosh Trophy player.

“When we won matches, I used to celebrate with my teammates with a drink or two at times. But after starting training at KFC, I have never drunk a drop,” says another youngster. “It is easy for the youth from the poor fishermen community to end up on the wrong side of the society. When we started in 2009, we saw a lot of youngsters with such habits. We can be proud that we have brought some of them back to life and prevented others from going down that path,” says Ebin.

KFC was founded by Tony Langham, a Briton, during one of his vacations at Kovalam, and is now headed by TGL Consultants founder R Chandramouli, Thiruvananthapuram District Football Association president S Geevarghese, G Sudheesh Kumar and former SBT team manager Pradeep Kumar G.

Beginning with 20 boys, they opened an academy in 2011 and now trains over 80 players. So impressed was Fisheries and Ports Minister K Babu by their efforts that he helped rope in Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation to assist the academy.

With the grounds at St Francis de Sales CBSE School and St Mary’s HSS, Vizhinjam, as their base, KFC currently plays in the Thiruvananthapuram District Super Division League. As their efforts are being recognised, a new horizon beckons. “A lot of well-wishers have got in touch with us, and we are hopeful of playing in the second division national league in a couple of years,” says Ebin.

Stadium dreams...

Proceedings to start work of an Indoor stadium at the heart of the town. Unlike in the news, the football stadium will be a subsequent project adjacent to it. Hope ULCCS will come up with flying colours as usual..

National Games to boost Kerala's sports base

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With Kerala gearing up to host its second National Games next year, the state's sports infrastructure is expected to get over Rs 600 crore as investment.

Construction of nine new stadiums of international standards is underway in different parts of the state while the upgradation of a number of existing facilities, including two swimming pools and seven indoor stadia, is fast progressing for the 35th edition of the multi-sporting event. The state is hosting the event after a gap of 27 years.

A squash court, shooting range and hockey turf are also being developed for the games.

According to the National Games Secretariat here, Rs 611.3 crore is estimated to be the budget for organising the much-awaited event, scheduled to be conducted from January 31 to February 14 next. Of this Rs 213.28 crore has been earmarked for building and upgrading of stadia.

While Rs 35 crore has been set apart for purchase of equipment, Rs 60 crore is being spent on the "Games Village", envisaged for the accommodation of over 5000 sportspersons at a time.

Jacobe Punnoose, former DGP and CEO of the 35th National Games, said apart from state-of-the art infrastructure, the convergence of hundreds of sports personalities would help revive interest for sports among the youth here.

"About 90 per cent of the construction or renovation works of the venues has been completed. Some of the pending works are those like the venues for shooting, hockey, tennis, trap and skeet and so on. But, it will also be completed within two-three months," Punnoose said.

A "Green Field Stadium", envisaged as a mammoth sports complex which can provide facilities to conduct various sports events, will be the flagship project being implemented in connection with the Games, he said.

"We are now planning to conduct the opening and closing ceremonies only at the Green Field Stadium at Karyavattom, on the outskirts of the state capital (Thiruvanathapuram). Once its works are completed, it will be the lone stadium complex in the country which is designed in compliance with the internationally accepted formats of both cricket and football," he said.

A total of Rs 161 crore is expected for its construction, being set up in the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode based on the Design, Build Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model.

The construction of the state's first squash court was almost completed at Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram at a cost of Rs. 4.17 crore, Punnoose said.

"The state will get a large number of internationally certified stadiums as part of the Games. It will revive the sports aspirations of young talents here. The event will also help the state to be a sought-after host of various national and international events in future," he added.

Over 10,000 delegates including athletes, technical staff and team officials from various states and federations are expected to arrive in Kerala during the time of the Games.
