Coach Factory: High-level delegation to reach Kanjiikodu today

Kochi, Thursday, 12 June: A high level delegation team of technical officials from the Southern Railway headquarters in Chennai will inspect on Thursday the land at Kanjikode identified by the State government for the Railway Coach Factory. Preparations are going on at the State and Central government level to lay the foundation stone of the project, the biggest Central government project in the State after the Cochin Port and the Cochin Refinery, in September. Hundreds of ancillary units will also come up for providing the nearly 1,000 components required to manufacture a railway coach. The State government had already identified 1,000 acres of land for the project. A preliminary inspection by a team of Railway officials on June 2 found the site suitable. The State government informed the Railways that once the Railway Board cleared the land, it will be acquired under fast track system. Special Officer for the Railway Coach factory project appointed by the State government, Usha Titus, is coordinating with the Railway authorities at Delhi to speed up the process. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, during his visit to the district on June 2, said that he had invited Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to lay the foundation stone for the factory. The project will bring an investment of Rs.6,000 crore and provide jobs to 3000 people under the Railways.

BEML in kanjikode

Heavy metal factory to be set up at Kanjikode

MALAPPURAM: The government will set up a heavy metal factory for defence purposes at Kanjikode in Palakkad district. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will lay the foundation stone for the factory on January 18, said Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim.

He was addressing newspersons after inaugurating the district conference of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) at Parappanangadi on Saturday.

Mr. Karim said that the factory was being set up at the special interest of Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony. The Defence Minister will preside over the foundation laying function, he said. Bharat Earch Movers will be given responsibility to set up the plant, which is expected to cost Rs. 260 crore.

About 160 hectares of land in the possession of KINFRA will be given for the plant. The government will acquire another 240 hectares for the plant later, said Mr. Karim.

Heavy equipment like bulldozers and earthmovers as well as heavy vehicles meant for defence use will be manufactured at the plant. Mr. Karim said the plant would be commissioned by 2012.

According to him, the plant would provide direct employment for about 1,500 people, and indirect job opportunitues to more than 4,000 people.
