Qatar-Abu Dhabi causeway will cost $13bn

The proposed Qatar-Abu Dhabi causeway will cost $13bn to develop, according to a local consultant.

Mohammed Ali, regional adviser with Denmark's Cowi, revealed the figure at MEED's Arabian World Construction Summit in Abu Dhabi. He says the latest design for the scheme will connect the two locations through a 65 kilometre-long bridge.

Cowi is likely to be involved in the project as a consultant. The firm has extensive experience with such projects and is already involved in the Qatar-Bahrain causeway.

The original design, which was first developed six years ago was for a 40-kilometre link. This was changed due to difficulties with the route, which ran through Saudi Arabian territorial waters.

There is currently no date set for construction work to start.
