You all are right about Bayshore. It has been half-assed with the new paved, old paved in segments. There is a new block home being built down by the Alagon & a side street being totally ripped up. The alzheimers place looks really good on Howard (only two floors) & it has not even been painted or stucko'd yet.

County leaders allocate $1.2 million to resurface Bayshore

By JOSH POLTILOVE | The Tampa Tribune
Published: February 08, 2012 Updated: February 08, 2012 - 3:04 PM

TAMPA --
Before the Republican National Convention comes to Tampa, drawing thousands of people including those with the national media and Fortune 500 companies, Hillsborough County officials want to make sure the area's signature roadway is sufficiently smooth.
County commissioners today voted 4-2 to resurface Bayshore Boulevard between Rome Avenue and Gandy Boulevard within the next several months.
The 2.9-mile stretch of asphalt will be resurfaced at a cost of nearly $1.2 million – the second-most expensive paving project the county has scheduled in the next three years.
The repaving will take a few months and be completed by Aug. 1. The job previously was scheduled to begin in 2014, but the commissioners' vote moved the project forward in the county's repaving schedule.
Funding won't come at the expense of other county road projects. Instead the money will come from a gas tax reserve fund and from excess funding for a reconstruction project along Boyette Road.
The Republican National Convention runs Aug. 27-30 and is expected to draw 50,000 people to Tampa. Convention planners expect thousands of attendees to be drawn to Bayshore – a boulevard Commissioner Sandra Murman called the county's most historic, scenic roadway.
"There will be an economic development opportunity that we will probably never get again," Murman said of the convention.
The other end of Bayshore, closer to downtown, has a concrete surface and is not slated for resurfacing by the county.
Commissioner Les Miller spoke against shifting Bayshore's improvements up a few years while other projects in dire need – such as those along 17th Street and Orient Road – won't begin this year.
"You ride around there," Miller said of 17th Street, "and it's like riding over alligator backs."
It's not fair that some communities will be deprived of immediate improvements to damaged roads while Bayshore is spruced up quickly for cameras, Miller said.
County leaders prioritized which roads need to be fixed first, and the commissioners should stick to that list, Miller said.
Commissioner Kevin Beckner voted in favor of the Bayshore resurfacing but said he wanted other roads and funding sources identified for quick improvements.
Millions of dollars already have gone into recent work along Bayshore, including restoring the balustrade, building a landscaped median and adding bicycle lanes.
Pavement treatment, needed over time due to the volume of traffic and weight of vehicles, gives roads a smoother surface, improves traction, extends the life of a road and reduces issues of standing water, according to a county report. Roads will fail without resurfacing, leading to more costly repair.
Road reconstruction costs five to 10 times as much as resurfacing, said John Lyons, the county's public works director.

Just think, we wouldn't have to be dealing with who road gets improved first if we past the referendum....

This makes no sense. They're resurfacing the asphalt from Rome Avenue southward, which is the smoothest part of Bayshore. But they're not touching the concrete from Rome northward, which is the bumpiest.

I've just been emailed about a restaurant called Ciros Speakeasy and Supper Club. Has this been mentioned on SC before? Has anybody been there for dinner or drinks? From what I've read about it, is that it's kind of a hidden place and I'm thinking they don't want masses to start going there. Anyway, I've never heard of it until now. I thought the Colonade was the only restaurant on Bayshore.

Cirro's is awesome, but not everyone's cup of tea (or old fashioned would be better expression for them). They make amazing prohibition era drinks for prices that are pretty high (but very very much worth it). The food is really good, but not amazing -- but again the drinks are amazing.

You make a reservation and they call you with the password the day of your reservation so it kinda pretends to be a Speakeasy that way. So it's a little hipster or cool kid in the ambience department -- and they take their time on everything and charge real money for that time. These hurdles keep the masses away even though it's well known.

Thanks for the info. Sounds kinda fun. I wish I lived closer to there. I don't like getting smashed then driving a long way home. Maybe I'd go in a party of four and one of them is not a big drinker so he could drive us to and from.

A word of advice - just make sure that you and everyone in your party knows the "password." I went shortly after it opened as part of a larger group. A friend and I showed up early, and did not have the password. After some coaxing, they let us in - reluctantly - and then proceeded to harass us for the next five minutes about our reservations. I did not know the name of the person who'd made them originally, but explained the situation and said they should be along shortly. Instead of allowing us to order a couple drinks at the bar while we waited, no fewer than two more employees / managers came and questioned us.

We were professionally dressed, sober as judges and minding our own business. I could see no reason at all for their concern, other than a completely unnecessary pretentious attitude. Fed up, we waited outside for the rest of our group, but by that time, I was ready to call the whole thing off.

Long story longer - we finally ate and the food was okay, but the tables on which to eat were tiny. One of the girls in my group joked that the decor resembled a French brothel. I didn't end up drinking, so I can't comment on the cocktails, but I've heard they're very good.

Maybe they've dialed down the attitude since then, but I have not been back to find out. I eat out several times a week, mostly in South Tampa, and I've never been more irked at any establishment. Ever.

Whew. Off my soapbox now. Hope your experience is better than mine was.

Toni has her notorious yellow sign on the Patriots corner. Don't know how long it's been there but it says up to 15 stories. Would be nice to get another tower there.

^Even if something is proposed, I'm sure the city council will waste a few million more suing the landowner to appease their idiot NIMBY friends. Here's to hoping when it happens this time, the offending council members get stuck with the legal bill personally.

Patriots corner. In tbo.com is an advertisement for a glass tower. Says pre-sales and a number to call. Do you think this is BS?

Not sure if this is the case or not, but sometimes realtors will initiate these things in the hopes that they get enough pre-sales to convince a developer to build, so they can then be the exclusive sales agent for the project.

I was thinking about it but it didn't look like something you could copy and paste. And of course it's not on her website. Next time I see it I will try to get it on here.
