$1.5b Caspian sea pipeline project

Iran launches $1.5B water project from Caspian Sea

Iran has launched a $1.5 billion project to bring water for drinking and irrigation from the Caspian Sea to its central desert.

Monday's report on state TV did not say how long it would take to complete the project.

The TV says the water will be pumped from the Caspian Sea -- the world's largest enclosed body of water. After desalination at the point of origin, it will be transported through a 500 kilometer (300 mile) -long pipeline to the central Kavir desert, bringing about 200 million cubic meters (7,062 cubic feet) of water per year.

Nearly 14 percent Iran's territory is desert and suffers from prolonged droughts.

The Caspian Sea is shared by Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. Its salinity is about a third of that of sea water.

a major project which will:
- build a water sweetening plant by the caspian sea shore
- build a 300mile long pipeline to bring the water to central regions
- water will be taken to semnan, qom, kashan and esfahan
- intends to stop the expansion of deserts in central Iran
- water will be used for agriculture, industry and consumption
- 500million cubic meters of water will flow out per year
- part of the vision which aims to connect the Caspian sea in the north to the Persian gulf in south.
- second phase will involve bringing water from Persian gulf.

Older forumers would remember the Caspian see to Persian gulf project posted in middle east forum 5/6 years ago. We had long discussions about it with Arab members. Now it seems it is finally getting started.

The biggest problem with Iranian people is that they don't know just how great their country can be.

I hope sufficient environmental research is conducted before operation. We don't want a second Aral Sea. If enough research has been conducted this project will be very positive I believe.
sixty years ago, upon the invitation of the Russian Red Cross, Princess Ashraf Pahlavi, twin sister of the Shah of Iran, went to see Stalin in order to demand the retrieval of Soviet invading forces from Iran. The princess entered the Kremlin where she pleaded with great passion for the liberation of Iran, her motherland. Impressed by her courage, Stalin became all smiles. He said loudly to his rather stern entourage: "Now here is a brave and true patriot." Pravda, June 28, 1946.
