Anyway, while we are still comparing it with real cities, here is a visualization I just made of the tower smack in the middle of the City of London!

I know, its not even as big as it should be! in this version it rises to about 1000m - I just couldn't make myself push it any further.

If that much space is left unoccupied, the building owner would need an army of cleaners and maintenance workers, and with only a few floors bringing them income, there is no way they could keep up the costs. The owner will lose hundreds of millions a year if the entire building is not occupied. I'm really confused by this.
This is where the developer's (Emaar) business acumen exceeds us average joes. The Creek Tower is built to be a loss leader, a very well known marketing concept. It will draw insane amounts of publicity for the surrounding apartments (which Emaar will sell at a fat profit), the surrounding hotels (which Emaar Hospitality owns), and most of all the almighty Creek Harbour Mall (yep Emaar Malls owns it too).

If the Burj Khalifa + Dubai Mall strategy is an indication, the profits from the surrounding businesses will be more than enough to cover the losses incurred by the Creek Tower. The Dubai Mall is the world's largest mall by total area and the world's most visited mall (~80million footfall in the year of 2016), with vacancy constantly being <4%. In order to lease any space in the mall, all tenants must have profit sharing agreements with Emaar on top of their standard rents. Don't forget Burj Khalifa's observation deck charges from $30 to $140 per person, add in the perennial queue just to get up there, it shows how much money they're rolling in from these megaprojects.

@Scion nailed it, you have to look at the forest and not at the tree, the body and not the individual cell. The tower alone means nothing financially, I mean, it can look like an unsustainable asset, but if Dubai Creek is successful the fact that this individual building by its own does not look profitable will mean nothing. This will definitely have a contribution marging to other operations in the new district.

Well said, Scion My thoughts exactly as well. They're just looking at how well Downtown Dubai worked with BK and are repeating it on an even broader scale.

Good points. They may find other uses for it as well, and it may end up having more floors.

Certainly, the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall are deeply connected. When I visited Dubai it felt quite obvious to visit them the same day. Probably, not being a fan of malls I would not have shopped at the Dubai Mall at all if not already there because of the tower. Also the fountains and all the barely visible people walking around are part of the view from the top

found a short video (in german) about calatrava:

https://www.srf.ch/play/tv/popupvide...rtTime=102.616

They show a few pictures of the construction of the model which stands now in the dubai mall.
They also repeat the statement that the order for calatrava was to plan the tallest structure , taller than any other.
They say that the tower is being planned in an calatrava-office in the USA and Dubai.

Here some shots:

If you skip to 1:30, the lights in facade of the tower looks like moving elevators... maybe there will be "Panoramic Elevators"?

1300+ m seems insane, but it's really happening in our time !

I'm really curious about the construction methods that we will see here.
And the crane erection and dismantling plan...

As I understand, it's mostly a structural core with elevator shafts. There's not really that much to maintain.

Goodnight,

I've been to the Dubai Mall, and I've done several measurements of the Dubai Creek Tower model through a laser Distance Meter.

It has a height of 9m and a radius of 2m, which is the same as 4m in diameter.

9m / 4m = 2.25
2.25x500m =1125m
