I remember the various iterations of Melbourne Central. Did it actually encroach Pans Ops?
Was the 280m of this pre-dumbed version inclusive of antennae?

I have newspaper clippings in my old shoe box, but not of this version.
PANS-OPS back in the mid-80s was not a thing to be concerned with.

The Victoria Project (predecessor of design above) with it's Empire State building style was well over 300m, I think it was 380m to the top of the stick.

db2, Yes l remember very well the Empire State proposal that was originally proposed for the Melbourne Central site, or what was known has Museum Station in the early 80’s.

Do you remember why it did not go ahead or get built cause l sure do remember why, and the one you posted a photo of that you say was 280metres high, was meant to be 72 storeys, and the reason that did not get built was because Telecom not Telstra as we know today, decided to go ahead and build their own tower at 242 Exhibition Street, Melbourne, instead or leasing any floors in that tower.

You'd be surprised how often I've had friends and relatives visiting from overseas who have commented and been in awe of - without prompting - just how many incredible skyscrapers Melbourne has. Really is a good feeling!

The original proposal required the complete block, but the Commonwealth government (I think Kim Beazley?) refused to sell the ugly tower block on Swanston Street (now low-class student accommodation).

Kumi Gumi (Japanese firm) then became more involved and changed the design from Hassell to their local boy Kisho Kurokawa. Personally I think the Kisho design is a beauty, it just needs more height for it's girth.

280m is only a guess, it may have actually been 290m.

The foundations apparently were overbuilt, hence a taller tower could be supported. Maybe in an alternate universe it could grow to its true size

Basically, it is still a beauty even with all the new stuff. Aurora will be the one to finally outclass it.

The day that Clay is happy will be the day we will be unhappy.

The sadder Clay is the better; I hope he is truly miserable. His anti-height crusade has been an abysmal failure, now he is just lashing out. Let him flail about. No one should care about him.

Sadly for clay it's too late. There will be 30 200+m towers on the skyline before too long !!!

He has an equivalent in Sydney called Elizabeth Farrelly. As bad as each other.

A lot of people do read what they both write though.

It is just like a snakeskin with purple pattern, basking in the sunshine; not trying to camouflage itself at all...next to that green python of Victoria One!

I am the source of the above image, from that very same newspaper article (1986) it says:

Quote:
will now be 290m
Back in 1986 that may have been above street, but more likely RL. 290m RL with +13m ground gives 277m.

All moot, never built in that form. Height chopping was happening 30 years ago, and still happens now.

Victoria One is now the tallest roof in the Melbourne CBD at 264m RL.

There was a design for Melbourne Central even before that one which did have a spire and was even taller. The cone atrium we ended up with was originally church roof shaped, bigger and connected to the tower too.

Yes, that's correct. I remember that proposal too.

Buggered if I can find an image of that proposal (Google Schmoogle) - I have the clipping in a cardboard box somewhere.

I did find a link to an engineering paper (behind a firewall) that is a wind study of "Victoria Central" (the original name for the proposal) which is described as "a 306m office tower".

The Victoria Central proposal was awesome - huge glass canopy over the shot tower and station, with a very Empire-State-like 90+ level tower.

Yes it was Redbaron, who posted a image of the Victoria Central, that was the first proposal for the Melbourne Central site, it was meant to be 90+ stories high Elizabeth Street end, and the second tower on Swanston Street, was meant to be 25 stories high, a huge glass canopy in the shape of a triangle like a church, would have connected the 2 towers and covered the shot tower.

It would have been the worlds biggest glass canopy if it was built.
