Archaeology of Romania

A thread presenting pictures of archaeological discoveries of Romania.

The territorry is renowed in scientific society for the earliest European civilizations: Turdaș, which invented the metallurgy and the writing, Cucuteni, that built world's biggest Neolithic cities and others.

Also, for the original Dacian civilization and for the remarkable discoveries from the migration period.

Căscioarele Neolithic Sanctuary

The sanctuary was discovered in a settlement of Boian Culture, ~5000-4500 BCE. It is situated on an island of Căscioarele Lake in Bărăgan Plain, Călărași County.

The sanctuary has painted walls and two painted columns without architectural function (they were venerated religiously).

The preserved column is exhibited at the Museum of Lower Danube, Călărași.

In the same archeological site, in a later level was discovered the architectural model of a temple from Gumelnița Culture (4600-3900 BCE) which I presented in a previous post.

Two Dacian Umbos from Piatra Roșie

Artefacts from Piatra Roşie fortress, Șureanu Mountains (part of Sarmisegetusa Regia system of fortresses of the Dacian capital).

One has the image of an auroch (the same animal that is on the coat of arms of Moldavia) and the other a griphon. It is still a subject of debate if they're a umbo shields or a gate decoration.

42 cm diameter, 1st century BCE, National History Museum Bucharest.

Early Neolithic signs at Gaura Chindiei Cave, Iron Gates

Situated at Pescari (now Coronini), it has on its walls Neolithic signs from 6000 BCE.

The cave also contains signs from all the following historical periods: Bronze and Iron ages and middle age (10-12th century), being a remarkable "alphabetical encyclopedia" of the history of this area.

Info from the book Arheologia peșterilor și minelor din România by Vasile Boroneanț. (downloadable from the link)

Thank you!
Ulmetum

The vicus (town) was built in 3rd century. Archaeological research proved that at the end of 4th century, Ulmetum was the host of hundreds of Goths, who after 375 CE were pushed from Dacia and Scythia (today Romania and Ukraine) over Danube by Huns, becoming foederati of Roman empire and settling in cities all around Moesia and Scythia Minor (Bulgaria and Dobruja).

In my first post on SSC you can see an aerial view of the castrum.
