I don't get why people are so upset at there being a new stadium built when Arthur Blank is paying for almost all of it out of his own pocket and the $200 million public funding part is from the same hotel tax that funded the Georgia Dome. Atlanta will likely also be getting an MLS team out of it, and probably a Super Bowl by 2020.

Guys I just found this on the AJC's tumbler. Its a model of the GA Dome back in '88 when they were showing it off to the IOC before they decided who would get the '96 Olympics. I'm so glad they changed the design!!!

Looks like an inflatable roof like Indy and Minnesota. And those circle ramps like Dolphin's Stadium.

IIRC, the circle ramps were in San Diego first.

I believe so. At the least I know whatever they're playing on is new because of a radio bit talking about the staff laying down the field for the event.

The GA Dome will hold its last events and close in March of 2017 per the AJC.

Finally Got to see What they were Talking About!

Went to the 'DOME' finally after 19 years since coming down to Georgia. It was suggested to me to see it firsthand before they tear it down and see why they are replacing it!

Well I AGREE now that I've seen it, after taking it in at a Pre-Season Falcon game on Thursday evening. First I can understand the opinion that it's 'Okay' and doesn't need to be replaced. The seating bowl is actually real good - every seat has a great view of the field - even up high! I know of 'Fans' in San Diego & Oakland in California who would 'DIE' to have a stadium such as this. - But there are drawbacks here compared to newer stadiums built recently that cannot be denied. First are the 'causeways' that are dreary and lack the modern essentials of stadiums today. Second is the 'DOME' itself that looks real DIRTY (Inside & Outside). Honestly, 20 years ago this WAS a real good stadium to host the Super Bowl on 2 occasions, but things have changed, and the 'Dome' now can't meet what today's Fans 'WANT' & 'EXPECT' in a modern stadium - especially paying the HIGH prices just to go to games these days. - Well I'm glad to see it FINALLY! - Next Up, Mercedes Benz Stadium Falcon Fans!!!

Feb. 5, 1988 – From the original caption: “U.S. Olympic 1996 Site Selection Committee tours Atlanta. The Georgia Dome would be part of what the Olympics could hope to have in 1996. Shown Friday morning at the Georgia Dome offices at the World Congress Center making his pitch to members of the U.S. Olympic Site Selection Committee is Lowell Evjen, shown on the right pointing to a model of the Georgia Dome. Left to right are members of the site selection group, Jimmy Carnes, Andy Burke, and Judith Davidson. This is not the final design.”

The black and white picture looks like one you would see with the Brooklyn dodgers looking at their model for the unbuilt dome or something, not a 1990s shot.

We're just concerned that projects like this encourage teams to abandon semi-okay stadiums in favour of new shiny ones so they can keep up with the Joneses. It's okay when it's funded mainly through private means, but this build will only encourage other teams to do likewise, some will have private funding, others will rely on taxes.
