For anyone thinking it's going to be a well used exercise trail type facility, yeah. Way too many intersections to cross that hold you up...

But for people cutting through for a couple of blocks, or just out for a stroll, it could be useful. That's part of why the function of the parklets is important, as is getting some public art along it (like a Lights On installation). If the Selmon Greenway is to be well used, it will need to be its own destination, as much as a facilitator of peds/cyclists heading to other destinations.

However, after working in southern downtown for over 3 years supervising city parking, including all of the lots under the Selmon, I think this project is worth it just for the sake of aesthetics alone. The Selmon is a massive concrete eyesore.

Lights would be sweet. It would definitely be something to walk with lights and some cool art.

Shade is actually huge as well. During a hot summer day, would you rather walk under shade or not? I think they have a real opportunity to do something cool under the Selmon and on small plots of land there between Franklin and Morgan through Vinik's development if they have some money and vision.

To me the best news with the whole Selmon greenway is all the awkward blocks being filled in with green space, most of which if developed would be Mize Capital HQ-like buildings at best and some of these lots are too small to ever develop. The greenspace is a better use and more visually pleasing. Especially when arranged in a linear fashion the parks become more then the sum of their parts.

I live in Ybor and love using it to cut through and avoid riding in traffic or on sidewalks, I just wish they would have connected it to the McKay bay greenway.

Pavement is smooth, the Adamo intersection is the only spot that takes time to cross but it's not really that bad. The only thing that really irritates me is how it just dead ends with no smooth transition to the street at 19st and Adamo. It goes, pavement/ dirt/ curb with 6 inch drop

Trip time for me from 19th to meridian, maybe 7 minutes. Never really timed it.

Maybe they could do a ped bridge at Adamo in conjunction with future work to extend it to the McKay Bay greenway... There would at least then be a largely uninterrupted route from Twiggs to 19th/20th. (the other roads crossed are lightly trafficked.)

I use the greenway now from skypoint to Ybor via the bike share. I formerly took Franklin and cut over on 7th but very ungly and had to share the road with cars. The Crossing of roads wasn't nearly as bad as a thought but then again I mainly used it during the evening so could probably worse during business hours. I think with the new development on adamo and crosstown MUCH more people will use the greenway and people still dont know its there So I thinking LED Lighting, Painting the Trail, and SIgnage at Ybor and downtown is important. ALso near downtown they need Fix the trail some as the corners are too small to cross when you get near the riverwalk for bikes and the regular sidwalk traffic. It shrinks down to like 4 feet wide.

I just noticed that two days ago when I was driving around checking it out. There are some kinks in the trail for sure.

I saw what Cuban Bread means about how it just ends near 19th too. I don't understand how that got built like that, even if it's a short term thing.

Construction of Five Pocket Parks Along Selmon Greenway begins August 10, 2017

Quote:
August 4, 2017 - In July, the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority opened the Deputy Kotfila Memorial Dog Park located on Raymond Street, along the Selmon Greenway as its first park. Today, THEA is excited to announce that construction of five pocket parks will begin on August 10, 2017. The Selmon Greenway is approximately 1.7 miles in length providing a connector for pedestrians and bike traffic to Downtown locations and activities. Construction will continue through to December 2017.

There are five parks under construction, beginning at the west end in Downtown Tampa’s Central Business District and ending near the School Board Building. (From Tampa Street to Kennedy Boulevard, underneath the Expressway.)

All the work will be accomplished during daytime hours. Pedestrians should be aware of possible sidewalk detours and closures throughout the construction area.

MUCH NEEDED! I was walking back to the Riverwalk from Channelside a week and a half ago and appalled how sh*t the Greenway was from the corner to Jefferson and Brorein to the river.

Lets talk about this parking spaces for a second. Want to park in these spaces? You can't! There's a concrete "hump" that protects anyone from crossing the "greenway" in their vehicles to park in any of these spaces. But instead of ripping up the concrete and filling it in with grass or anything, they leave it their! Genius!

Here's another genius move! A little sliver of an old couple parking spaces. Rip it out and lay some grass or even mulch over it? Nope, we will leave the reminder that you are standing, walking, running, and biking over a once prestigious parking lot.

But don't worry posters, THEA and Tampa didn't allow the greenway to be completely void of anything that could resemble a well executed urban and walkable greenway..... they added these nice "bought at a garage sell" bench and trash bin to place on a nice grassy patch of..... I mean to place on some asphalt.

HOPEFULLY, THEA has picked designs that are not going to be cheap @ss like the greenway except turned out to be. And for the future, Tampa and THEA, only build when you can deliver us a quality product and not a bargain price excuse of a "greenway". Thanks!

Easy fix and most likely part of future plans to beautify the remaining parts, I would think as one project on its own.

Similar to the general ideology I see throughout this forum, if we can't get what we want now, we don't want it...most of what we have would never have come if it had to be all or nothing.

I would imagine in a year or two the Selmon Greenway will be much better in regards to the aesthetics..

The Greenway was the first partnership of its kind and I am sure budgeting was extremely tight, but its there now, the backbone and something to build around.

That new Deputy Kotfila Memorial Dog Park (aside from that mouthful of a name) is actually pretty great. One plus that comes from having a giant expressway running through the middle of your downtown is it does provide quite a bit of shade and rain protection.. They have a big and small dog park both with astro-turf, obstacle courses, water fountains, and tennis balls available. Great location to go wear the dogs out before heading for beers at Pour House or City Dog.
