From the book "Unseen Lithuania".
The largest Old Town in the Eastern as well as within the Northern Europe, which loses only to Prague in the Central Europe, covers almost 4 sq. kilometers and has 1500 buildings from the 13-18th centuries. Also, 19 century quarters like the New Town, cover around 4 sq. kilometers and has around 1000 buildings from the 19th century. Only half of the Old Town seen on this picture. ![]() Architectural styles: Pre-Christian (partly Romanic), Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Empire, Georgian and so on. On the lower side of the picture - ancient Orthodox cathedral, build in the 14th century. Gothic building with the later layer in Georgian medieval style from the late 19th century reconstruction. This was the Centre for all the Orthodoxes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Kiev mitropolite had his residence nearby. In the distance - the spires of the Baroque churches of Vilnius. This unique style is called "Vilnian Baroque" - disctinctive school of Baroque, that was recognized by the UNESCO. In the centre of the picture - Classical Town Hall. ![]() The Upper Castle (Gothic, 15th century), the Lower Castle (13-21 centuries) and the New City Centre. ![]() 16th century University of Vilnius. The central campus is made of 13 inner yards with Renaissance arcs, galleries, 17-18th centuries frescoes, church (Gothic, Baroque and Classical) and campanile tower (16th century, 69 m.), aula, publishing house from the 16th century, library (est. 1570) - one of the most impressive in the World, 4th oldest professional astronomical observatory in Europe (1753). In the distance - President palace - 19th century building in Empire style with the inner garden/park, half-millenium old. Further - churches and monasteries in Vilnian Baroque style. ![]() Renaissance yard of the University, Gothic/Baroque church, observatory tower. Building in the distance - one of the oldest hotels in the region, known from the year 1569.

"Unseen Lithuania".
Classical Town Hall. In the distance - four sacred places: two Catholic, one Orthodox and one Uniate, where relics of six Saints, who lived in Vilnius are kept (there are other sacred places in Vilnius, as more Saints lived there, not only these). Near the church of St. Teresa - the chapel of the Sharp (also known as Aušros) Gates with the sacred 16th century painting of Holy Mary, encrusted in gold and precious stones and crowned with the two crowns by the Popes. The painting is considered Saint not only among the Catholics, but also among the Orthodoxes, Uniates and even Jews and Karaites as it "miraculously stopped the plague and saved the city residents", "helped during the occupation of Muscovy" and is also known for the other miracles. ![]() The Sharp Gates (or Aušra Gates) with the surviving fragment of the 16th century town wall. Further, on the left side, Basylian monastery is seen. Here, Uniate (worshiped by Belarussians and Ukrainians) Saint Josaphat Kuntsevych spent the most important part of his life. In the same monastery, Polish-Lithuanian-Belarussian national poet Adam Mickiewicz was imprisoned by the Russian authorities and during his imprisonment, the most important works of this poet were born. The same monastery was the most important Centre in the World of Belarussian culture in the beginning of the 20th century. Here, all the most prominent Belarussian cultural figures worked in local Belarussian school and museum, created the finest pieces of literature, science and so on. Further on the left - Taras Shevchenko square with the monument to the Greatest Ukrainian poet. Taras spent his youth in Vilnius, where he learned and formed as a personality. On the right side of the picture - Orthodox monastery, where the relics of the Three Orthodox Saints (known as The Three Martyr-Saints of Vilnius: Anthony, John, and Eustathios) are kept and worshiped.
