More than half of the units — including a penthouse priced at nearly $5 million — are under contract in Tampa's newest proposed condo tower, Virage. Two months after sales began, the 71-unit project on Bayshore Boulevard ''is certainly exceeding our expectations," Jay Tallman, president of Sarasota-based Ascentia Development Corp., said Tuesday. "We couldn't be happier.''

So far buyers have contracted for about $60 million worth of units, including the 6,700-square-foot penthouse that could be Tampa's priciest condo in a decade if the sale goes through. Still remaining are the second penthouse and units starting at just over $1 million. Sales to date have pushed the 24-story Virage "fairly close" to the amount needed to begin construction, probably this fall, Tallman said.

Not much of an update, but basically says the condo tower is still on track for what has been the expected groundbreaking period.

Virage Bayshore, a 24-story luxury condominium tower, will officially break ground Thursday on the former Colonnade restaurant site.

More than 60 percent of the tower's 71 units are reserved, representing $75 million in presales, developer Jay Tallman said. Tallman is principal of Ascentia Development Group, which is building Virage in a joint venture with Batson-Cook Development Co.

^If I'm thinking correctly, since the end of the last boom in 2008, only four buildings over 20 floors have been built in Tampa, 2 on HI, Skypoint and the one on Franklin that's about to open. Within a few weeks or months we'll have at least the same amount of buildings going up at the same time as we had the entire last ten years-this, Channelside Club, USF, hopefully the hotel down there. Exciting times!
