I think this is part of the mentality of the people. Basically a Bremer wouldn't claim to others that he is living in a beautiful city, being aware of the problems the city has to deal with. Nevertheless, the city is prettier and more liveable than its image suggests. And yes, I am very happy to live here.

That's right, Hardhill. While "Bremers" (I am not one, moved here in the mid 2000's) can be fiercely proud of their city, they also like something that is called "Hanseatic understatement" in German. You can even see it in the architecture:

While these houses in the district of Bremen-Neustadt seem like rather modest two-storeyed houses from the street side, they in fact have four fully usable storeys as is shown by this picture of the back of the same houses:

Because of the high groundwater level, the basements were only excavated to about one metre below ground level, the excavated soil was then used to raise the street level about a metre above the original ground level, so that the basement on the frontside is on normal ground level on the backside. Also the attic that normally just has two dormers to the street side becomes a full storey on the back of the house.

This leads to the fact that most Bremen houses look a lot smaller than they really are - something typical of "Hanseatic understatement".

Really interesting, as I am living in a basement (souterrain) in the Ostertor district myself.

Okay, let's see what I can find... some more old town maybe, although once again, I'm running out of presentable motives, guess you'll get some more Bremen houses later

Another perspective on the market square:

and a view towards Domsheide:

The "Bible Garden" of Bremen Cathedral:

Another brick expressionist gem is the concert house "Glocke":

with the central post office vis-à-vis:

Just to give you realistic picture of the whole scene, I can't spare you this sight with the dreadful "Volksbank" building to the right which has just been refurbished by none other than Max Dudler to stay with us for another fifty years:

The eastern city centre wasn't hit by the war as hard as the rest of the centre and thus is rather well preserved with fewer postwar eyesores than the rest of downtown. It is dominated by huge Gründerzeit buildings of the justice and police departments (to the right on the first photo):

There is a strange postmodern area from the early nineties between Ostertorstraße and Schnoor which tries to convey a genuine "old town" feel with rather modern architecture, I'm not entirely convinced it's working out, but at least it was a sincere effort:

This is one of the main shopping streets, the Sögestraße:

And to finish it off, one of the classic Bremen views from Herdentorsteinweg towards the windmill (there used to be 4 of these along the park of the former city fortification, but the other 3 didn't survive the war:

That's it for tonight!
