The timing is probably borderline since the end of Feb is scheduled atm.
Would be nice if it were though.

Elsewhere the FA Cup Final in England is pretty much always at Wembley (and pretty much all England home soccer internationals). There was a period this moved around the country - but this was only when Wembley was being rebuilt.

With the amount of corporate seats / sponsor etc that are taken up in a major final you really do need one of the biggest stadiums if regular supporters are going to get a chance of going along.

Obviously Australian geography also plays a part. In some countries major finals have a history of being moved around - most notably the Superb Owl. But this has been a tradition for a long time - and it has never been held somewhere so far removed from the majority of the population (e.g. Hawaii). Perth is so far away from the vast majority of the Australian population that this would also play against it.

Only chance I could ever see of Perth getting an AFL grand final would be if MCG was out of action for major refurbishment / other major event (Olympics (if Australia had do jump in at the last minute so host if another one fell through), World Cup etc).
AFAIK The super bowl is moved around as two separate division winners are playing each other and there is really no way of determining a "home" grand final advantage, it's a bid process. The NFC and AFC finals are played at home grounds respectively, I thought this would have been self explanatory.

In regards to WCE and FD grand final, yes it should be played in Perth, it just makes sense. We will just have to wait and see if it happens, when it happens.

Just remember the AFL was formed out of the VFL so anyone questioning why the AFL is so dominated by Victorian teams and "culture" I guess just need to take a breath and realise it's roots. I think from memory there have been ……. 3 non Victorian Grand Finals since the AFL. Yes it would have made sense to hold the GF at the minor premiership winning team (or highest of the two finalists). However take note if the 2005 and 2006 finals were held at Subi then we would have seen 45000 in the stands as opposed to the 90000+ we actually saw (I think 2005 saw closer to 100K), and yes I am aware Sydney is a legacy South Melbourne club.

So settle down, everything will work out eventually (especially with larger stadiums), we now have a few more non Victorian teams in the AFL, but again just remember the roots before shaking your fists at the MCG, and as Sanj would say, remember it's a business and business is all about the money.

Yeah well when Perth has a 70000+ capacity stadium built it might make sense to hold a WA grand final there??

EDIT - As in I mean Perth stadium can hold 70K people. As in I support a GF at Perth. Oh fück it I need to change my name.

In 2015, the NRL had an all-Queensland Grand Final for the first time in its history. Granted, it was between two teams from different cities (Brisbane and Townsville), but the NRL still didn't move the final from Sydney.

It probably would make sense to hold the GF in Perth if both Perth AFL teams made the final. But it won't likely happen any time soon with the MCG holding the rights to host the AFL Grand Final until at least 2037. The Victorian State Government will probably fight to keep the GF in Melbourne too.

In the grand scheme of it, 60 000 now seems like a pathetic capacity.

When only 7000 GA can see an Eagles or Dockers game, it's woefully short in a city of 2 million, come on now.

We still get decent football matches only attracting 35k total at Subi. This will eventually offer 35k from each side to watch. 70,000 is a lot of people to expect to any game. Even Melbourne at 4.5m people falls 20-30k short of 100K capacity to big footy matches. 60/70k seems more than enough for us. In 2030+ we'll probably have 2.5m+ people filling the stadium more often, but in reality could also have another AFL team dispersing memberships/crowds. So there are a few factors.

The atmosphere of a 70k strong derby crowd will be insane and dare i say match any 100k Melbourne crowd you'll see (we won't have the extra neutrals attending like a GF can get either).

Melbourne gets limited days per year over 60k a year with far more big events than us.
And we are told that there is the opportunity of 70k.

I think WCE sell out many of their games, but granted not all turn up. But Subi being an ordinary stadium doesn't cause some of that.

As a matter of interest:

2016

Round 1: Geel v Haw 74,218
Rich/Carl 75,706
Round 2: Coll/Rich 72,761
Round 5: Coll/Ess 85,802
Round 7: Coll/Carl 60,222
Round 9: Haw/Syd 61,522
Round 12: Melb/Coll 60,158
------
QF: Geel/Haw 85,802
SF: Haw/WB 87,823
PF: Geel/Syd 71,772
GF: Syd/WB 99,981
------
Boxing Day Test: 63,478

Not sure how many other events are 60k+ last year, but guessing there wouldn't be many.

8 of the them + a small number are significantly over 60k.
In Melbourne.

geez, all tha big melb teams competing w/ each other w/ exception to syd...

tha great thing is that there is a decent chunk of "walk up" seats to any game which hasn't necessarily happened in Perth for a very long time unless your getting scalped tix for subai games...
