Atturaif, located approx 30km north of Riyadh, is the birthplace of the First Saudi State, and has recently been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In conjunction with Tropman & Tropman Architects, LookEar and Associates were engaged to develop detailed interpretive, museological and exhibition design for 12 small museums and historic buildings within this historic site. These designs included the development of detailed content, draft scripts, 2D and 3D design, digital multimedia design, curatorial guidelines for valuable collection items, consultation with Islamic and Saudi Arabian history scholars/ experts, consultation with conservation architects and high-level presentations to the client’s project team. The final designs were then included as part of the tender documentation for the development of the whole site.

Client: Arriyadh Development Authority

I really like these kind of projects as we need to conserve and exhibit our culture to ourselves and visitors from abroad, thanks for sharing and posting.

This looks real great. What a great project. Too bad SA doesn't allow tourists. It has a lot to offer.

Tourists are allowed in by invitation or in groups. The Hajj/Umrah visa has also been extended to one month to double as a tourist visa. There are also plans to open the country up to tourism.

However, I do believe that tourism should be kept in check with quotas for the sake of preserving local culture and identity. There have been huge issues with the Bedouins surrounding Petra and its wadi regarding identity and opportunity because of tourism. You get people who speak Arabic, English, German, Italian, and French, yet they can't even read or write. There are also problems with alcoholism. Overall I do believe that while tourism is good, it should be managed and not completely open.

According to an inside source working on and overseeing the project itself has told me that the district and museum should be open to the public by before National Day (Sept. 23) next year!!!
