Cities which already hosted the games but, let's say, 80-100 years ago , are in the same position that cities who never hosted in terms of venues since generally most of the venues used a century ago are certainly not still in place anymore nowadays.... Not to mention that the number and type of Olympic disciplines are not exactly the same today as during pre-war Olympics.

Incorrect! If Istanbul loses it's 2020 bid and decides to build all venues needed regardless of loss in preparation for the 2024 bid, then it would be ready. :P

C'mon I visited Manchester and it's not a city for olympics.

I would love to see olympics in these cities. Hamburg, Zürich, Prag or Stockholm.

not the biggest places but with soul, tradition, culture. But I doubt that in these days a normal city will get the olympics

I agree if Istanbul builds it's venues it would be one of the more ready cities. I know from previous bids they have started building venues already.

Prague didn't even shortlist for 2016. The fact that they couldn't get government support didn't help, but nonetheless they still have a long way to go.

Yes, I was just picking on the "has quite a few venues in place from the Commonwealth Games" comment, as most wouldn't be suitable for an Olympic Games.

It doesn't matter if you have all the venues needed for the Olympics, if you don't have an olympic village to host the sportsmen and the media, hotels for the tourists and other facilities needed.

Actually it does matter. It only means that you need to expand on hotel capacity and build an athlete's village. All other competing cities would be far behind with the need to build at least a couple of sporting venues, and athlete's village even if they have sufficient hotels.

It works both ways, but if you got all sporting venues (well at least most of them) ready to go, then there's no worries with delays. Getting selected to host is another factor, but if you haven't hosted before, are consistent in bidding and so forth, you are a good chance.

To anyone who suggested Dublin, we are an unbelievable distance away from being to host an olympics. Our infrastructure isn't good enough, nowhere near enough facilities, country is broke.

Dublin? Tis nice of course, but obviously you lack many key venues. Heck it took you years before you finally decided to build something close to a major arena and things like your 2nd terminal at the international airport.
