Design Perspectives: Occidental Park getting a great new neighbor

By CLAIR ENLOW
Special to the Journal

200 Occidental will open its doors in two months, and it will be a fine address. That may not seem like high praise for design, but it is because the building is a key piece of a bigger achievement: a four-decade-long project called Occidental Park.

Thanks in part to 200 Occidental, the park is now truly the heart of Pioneer Square.

For the second summer in a row, Occidental Park is filled with people, thanks to a new partnership between the city, Downtown Seattle Association and other groups.

Starting this fall, 200 Occidental will add 800 people to the daytime population of Pioneer Square. Mithun designed the building with a modernist facade that brings a fourth side to the historic square.

This is one of those projects that looks even better in real life than it looked in the renderings. Took a decade to make it happen, but the final product will be great.

I love the brick facade. It's so classy, classical looking, and yet very modern

It's lovely how this structure hugs the tree canopy. What a dramatic improvement! It feels like big city infill.

Cherry Street will open space in 200 Occidental

Mallet is the architect and contractor for Cherry Street Public House, which will be the local company's first establishment to serve beer and wine.

By BRIAN MILLER
Journal staff reporter

200 Occidental has a second tenant.

Urban Visions' Greg Smith and Cherry Street Coffee House founder Ali Ghambari are partners in a new venture coming to Occidental Square. Weyerhaeuser is moving this month into Smith's new eight-story office building on Occidental, and Ghambari will begin construction soon on Cherry Street Public House, his first establishment to serve beer and wine.

They just opened their 11th location, in the new Vue Research Center at 500 Fairview Ave. N.

The 2,294-square-foot Public House will have space for about 85 customers inside, and another 20 at outdoor tables. The Public House will open early, for the early coffee rush, and stay open to nine or 10 for the evening crowd. The location will be mid-block, with sliding windows facing west toward the park, right next to Weyerhaeuser's corporate entrance.

On the Block: Weyerhaeuser may be downsizing but it'll soon have a big impact on Pioneer Square

On Saturday, the 126-year-old forest products company Weyerhaeuser will begin moving from its Federal Way campus to the heart of downtown Seattle.

Over the following two weeks, about 700 employees will march into the new company headquarters at 200 Occidental Ave. S. That eight-story building was purpose-built, with great fanfare, by Greg Smith's Urban Visions. A variety of plans for the site, which faces Occidental Park and was a parking lot since the 1960s, had been circulating for decades.

The reflection of the trees in the glass making the Weyerhaeuser sign seem to float in the branches is kind of cool, a fortuitous marketing opportunity.

The giant ice block is....odd...

Weyerhaeuser has moved in...

...and it's looking good!

I still can't believe how much it's improved Occidental Square...

The square is absolutely fantastic now. Both the building, food trucks and the games and tables and chairs have transformed it into one of the best public spaces I've been to in the US. It has a very human scale and the addition of 200 occidental has made it very cosy.

On another note, even though I've spent a ton of time there, I don't remember seeing that curved wood wall, anyone know what's up with it?

Temporary art installation. Very similar to the one last month that was long side down and in front of Grand Central Bakery.
