New Rivers Specialist Hospital to gulp $98m ...Amaechi performs ground-breaking ceremony

Quote:
The Team Leader of Clinotech the Canadian firm handling the construction of the new Rivers Specialist Hospital, Dr. Harrison Ofiyai says the Justice Adolphus Karibi Whyte Specialist Hospital, former University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) would gulp $98 million.

Dr. Ofiyai, who stated this yesterday during the ground-breaking ceremony of the hospital project said out of the $98 million, about $60 million had been paid by the Canadian partners to enable work commence at the site.

He further stated that the Rivers State Government has also paid a counterpart funding of $38 million into the project, adding that the hospital will have a 1,000 bed capacity to cater for all categories of medical cases in the state.

“Clinotech will also ensure the maintenance of the hospital and the establishment of this hospital will invariably create room for employment as well as build the capacity of health workers in diverse areas,” he said.

He, however, thanked the Rivers State Government for collaborating with Canadian partners to carry out such a magnificent project.

Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State performed the ground breaking ceremony of the Mega Hospital named after Justice Adolphus Karibi Whyte.

The multimillion dollar hospital is located at the old site of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in the old Port Harcourt Township.

Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony, Governor Chibuike Amaechi renewed the commitment of the state government to ensuring that health-care was not only accessible, but affordable in the state.

Governor Amaechi said the government was reconstructing 105 health centres explaining that agreement for the construction of the centres under a contractor-finance arrangement would soon be signed.

Under the arrangement, Governor Amaechi explained, the contractor would provide the money to finance the project while the sate government would pay back the money after five years.

The Governor disclosed that general hospitals were also being rebuilt saying that those whose health needs could not be met at the health centres would have to go to the general hospitals at the local government headquarters.

He pointed out that the general hospitals to be reconstructed would be of better standard with better accommodation for both doctors and nurses.

Governor Amaechi explained that the state government would continue to equip the Braithwaite Memorial Hospital and subsidise services rendered at the hospital, contending that services at the Justice Karibe Whyte Specialist Hospital would not be subsidised, since it would not be under government control.

He enjoined Clinotech to give a definite period that work on the project would begin and end, so as not to mislead the people.

He said when the environment of the specialist hospitals in the rural areas had been made conducive for doctors, the state government would then take stern disciplinary measures against doctors who do not stay at their places of postings.

Earlier, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sampson Parker said the specialist hospital was part of Governor Amaeci’s vision to improve the health care delivery system in the state, noting that the ground-breaking event marks the move to realise the dream.

Also speaking, the team leader of the Canadian partners in the project Dr. Harison Ofiyai, said on completion the hospital would be beneficial to Rivers people, Niger Deltans and Nigerians at large in taking care of some of their medical needs as well as provide employment for indigenes.

The Rivers State born medical practitioner based in Canada expressed happiness to be back home to partner with the state government in the establishment of a world class specialist hospital and assured that the project would be completed on schedule while soliciting for support to realise the goal.

Also speaking, the Chief Executive of Clinotech of Canada Mr. Celel Caglar, thanked the Rivers State Government for the opportunity to partner with them and promised that they would do their best to ensure early completion of the project.

In another development, the Rivers State Governor, Hon. Chibuike Amaechi attended the Redeemed Christian Church of God’s programme titled “A day with general Overseer in Jesus Partners” at the Civic Centre, Port Harcourt with Pastor Enoch Adeboy presiding over the annual event.

Design Changed...Location Changed...now 18 Floors

Rivers relocates Karibi-Whyte mega hospital to 'New P'Harcourt'

Quote:
THE proposed 18-floor Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte Specialist Hospital is now to be built in the Greater Port Harcourt City region and no longer within the old Port Harcourt township in Rivers State.

Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr Sampson Parker said last week after a technical presentation of the hospital's structural design by the consultants that the change in the site was based on the need to shift infrastructure facilities to the new Greater Port Harcourt City to attract developers. He said it was also informed by a survey carried out on high rise building.

In a statement by the Acting Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Blessing Wikina, the Commissioner said due to the change in the location of the hospital, the design for the hospital has changed.

The hospital would now be located opposite the International Airport Hotel in Omagwa in Ikwere Local Council of Rivers State.

The Commissioner announced that the necessary tests for the construction of the high rise building has been taken and noted that members of the Nigerian Medical Association and Nigerian Association of Architects would offer expert input into the project.

He said the presentation of the hospital's structural design at Government House Port Harcourt was to enable the government obtain clarification and interpretation on the detailed design of the project.

Parker said the construction of the hospital would begin as soon as the Civil Aviation Authority and Greater Port Harcourt City Authority give their approval.

The Health commissioner, who extolled the design presented by the consultants, pointed out that when the hospital is completed, it would draw the attention of doctors and the people.

He said, "the state government decided to enlist the services of consultants because the construction of an 18-floor hospital is different from an ordinary building. Because the technical design was done by a foreign firm, I felt that it is proper for us to see what they have done."

What stage of construction is the hospital in? If everything went as planned I think it should have been completed or close to completion by now. I can't wait until it's finished. I imagine it will take a 1.5-2 years to finish just about everything.
