The people of my neighborhood

I got a new lense that allows me to take candid shots from far away. I haven't done much people photograpy before and I don't really know how to use this lense yet so this is an experiment, this isn't a real thread.

I love people shots - makes a place much more interesting. This is a great start... Good work.

Thanks for the comments. I didn't have much free time this week but I managed to take a few more photos:

You could be a new John Berger. Do you like literature?

I read a lot of literature when I was younger but for the last ten years or so I have been reading mostly non-fiction, generally history. I have a preference for old history or historical documents written near the time of the era that is being written about - writers like Tacitus, Ibn Battuta, Bartolome de Las Casas, Francis Parkman, St Augustine, Orwell's journalistic works like Homage to Catalonia or Down and Out in Paris and London, things like that.

I am tangentially familiar with Berger's work but I haven't really read any of it.

When I am photographing what I try to do is take photos that show social contrast and slices of life. Lately when I am doing a proper phototour I try to go to some of the rich areas of the city, some of the middle areas and some of the poor areas and put it together as a visual narrative. In my opinion photography at it's best is a mirror that shows the world we live in from all angles. With the new equipment I have it will be more possible to do this because I can show individual people in social context.

If you like my people photos you should check out the photothreads by kingofthehill at SSP, mostly they are of LA but his most recent ones are of Chicago and Buenos Aires, his stuff is the model I am working from. His photography is brilliant.
