Anchorage Alaska - Fall 2009 (pics)

We'll start at the celebration for the opening of the new museum wing

The inaugural exhibit taking place inside the new wing features gold artifacts from as far back as South America and East Asian civ's, up to Buzz Aldrin's gold tinted helmet, a 1988 Oscar for Julia Roberts, Emmys for Tom Brokaw, Walter Cronkite, etc.. Works from Andy Warhol will be on exhibit in 2010. The new wing has up to date security and temperature control technology allowing for us to finally get major exhibits up north.

the new wing is in the distance on the right

Town Square

Midtown Anchorage

The Kimball Building (currently occupied by the Kobuk Cafe which is the successor to Kimball's Dry Goods) was built in 1915 and was thus spared demolition during construction of the park. Anchorage was founded in 1914.

some scoundrel steeled the Amsterdam marker. BTW the cities in red are our sister cities

our first real billboard OMG!

new convention center in the background

And that wraps it up. Back to the new museum. The just placed birch trees sit in the former site of a brutalist fire station and prison demolished 10 years ago. Hope you enjoyed

Anchorage Inte'l Airport ...Back China July10, 2010

We looked at mountains until dawn, and then when dawn came, it was too pretty for me - there was pink and blue and gold, in the sky, and on icy places, brilliant pink and gold flashes, and the snow was colored too, and I said," Oh," and sighed; and each moment was more beautiful than the one before; and I said, " I love you, Momma." Then I fell asleep in her arms.
That was happiness then.

Great for ya to make the trip, and good timing!

Where will you be staying in the city?
I would suggest not staying in Anchorage the whole time. Stay a few days there then rent a car and drive around the state; visit the Kenai peninsula, Seward, drive to Fairbanks, Valdez, Homer, etc, but really, don't stay in ANC the whole time (it will bore you easily).

If you do want to stay around the city remember to visit the Turnagain Arm to the south, Chugach Mountains, Kincaid beach, Glen Alps, Eagle River Nature Center in Eagle River, Eklutna Lake, and definitely up toward Hatcher Pass just outside of Palmer. You will love it!

Don't be fooled about the density in the pics! It has TONS of surface lots. I was there 2 years ago and walked around downtown around 11pm in the summer and was surprised at all the surface lots. YUK!
Otherwise it's a nice city surrounded by beautiful land.

I'd LOVE to see Anchorage get more infill and a new tallest for the city, in my lifetime anyway!
