What OKC will look like in 2012
![]() Here's what OKC will look like in 2012, once the 850-ft tall Devon Tower is complete. The only change shown in this rendering, produced by the developer of rezoneOKC.com (who also posts on here), is that Devon is added. There are some newer developments just recently completed to the north of downtown (that you don't see in too many existing skyline shots) that fill in the cityscape north of Bricktown and Downtown giving it a contiguous urban look. Of course there could be other skyline changes before the time Devon is finished, and the biggest changes will continue to be in the streets and inside the office buildings themselves, where OKC's office vacancy rate is going down and vibrancy has returned to the streets of Downtown OKC. Every downtown street is being redesigned right now for a large streetscaping project that needs to be finished by the completion of Devon Tower--in a coordinated effort to completely reinvent Downtown from top to bottom by 2012. There will also be parks out of the view of this shot, to the south (left) of view--starting with the Myriad Gardens across the street from the Ford Center, which are getting a complete makeover. The Myriad Gardens will have new amenities like a large lawn for an amphitheater and recreational activities, new LED lights in Crystal Bridge, a dog area, a year round ice rink, more fountains, restaurants, new plazas, etc etc (think of it as taking a traditional botanical gardens and turning it into a smaller, more compact, version of Houston's Discovery Greens).. Then will be the MAPS 3 park which will serve as the Central Park for Downtown OKC, and it will be a larger version of the Discovery Green in Houston. By 2012 either the convention center will have started construction or the electric streetcar tracks will be going in (both are also MAPS3 ballot initiatives that the public is going to overwhelmingly approve Dec 8th). More major projects continue to start, many coming out of nowhere it seems, in the Oklahoma Health Center--where several mid rises are currently under construction (the OHC starts 5 blocks northeast from Bricktown, so virtually behind where this view is from) Suffice it to say, OKC won't even be recognizable in 2012.

Questions:
(1) has it been decided where the new convention center will be built ? (2) what will they do with the Cox Center after that ? Also, I read somewhere that IRS is going to build something in the 'Galleria area.' Last edited by Dale; November 23rd, 2009 at 08:48 PM. |

Not recognizable? It's not recognizable to anyone outside of OK cuz no one cares.
That cartoon shows OK City with one tall building that looks out of place. In 2012 Oklahoma will look the same with one taller building (if finished). Kind of like a less-dense Toledo.... but newer with one really tall building. |

DT,NW exp,Medical district! And you know why I know you've never been here? you refer to OKC as Oklahoma The State!I see you dont have your location posted under your screen name!Where are you from?I bet you I can find something nice to say about your city!I CARE!

Oklahoma City will be easily recognizable in 2012. It's only 3 years away. It'll be unrecognizable if Nic's prediction is true. Ihatemyself for that. Lmao.

Use it as a temporary place to house the hordes of people moving to OKC. It's necessary until the hundreds of thousands of needed new housing units can be constructed. And? Every institution imaginable is building in OKC. What's your point? |

How is the Dale character still around? Seems he starts an argument in every thread he posts in.

The visual change to the skyline will not be that dramatic, other than the addition of Devon Tower and maybe a convention hotel to the south of downtown. The real changes by 2020 or so will be the addition of streetcar, enormous park, and all of the new housing and retail projected to be constructed. Thinking back to 1990, yes, by 2020 downtown OKC will be an almost unrecognizable urban environment from a street level. Things are very different already and they are going to get even more different.
