The Riverline was fine and reopened within 24hrs of sandy , the Hudson Bergen and Newark LRT had flooding and downed wires and it took about 3 days to repair and restore most of the service.

NJ Transit trying out new larger "stretch" trains on Hudson-Bergen
By Marli Horwitz/The Jersey Journal
on July 08, 2013 at 7:30 AM, updated July 08, 2013 at 7:31 AM

Sitting with the entire family while traveling on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail might not be a problem any longer.

On Wednesday, New Jersey Transit officials unveiled the “stretch” light rail car, which is 37 feet longer than the current light rail car and increases seating capacity by 50 percent, from 68 passengers to 102.

“Based on NJ Transit’s Scorecard Initiative, we found that crowding on the light rail system was a top concern,” NJ Transit Vice President and General Manager of Bus Operations Joyce Gallagher said at Hoboken Terminal on Wednesday. “This new vehicle will improve overall customer service in a cost-effective way.”

The expanded vehicle is the result of a private-public partnership between NJ Transit and Twenty-First Century Rail Corp.

Over a six-month trial period that began July 4, the new train car will rotate through the light rail system’s three lines. After the evaluation period, NJ Transit expects to deploy 26 of the new “stretch” cars, which would represent half the light rail’s fleet, said NJ Transit Deputy General Manager of Light Rail Operations John Squitieri.

The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system has roughly 47,000 daily riders. It stretches from 8th Street in Bayonne to Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen and connects passengers to important transportation hubs, including Exchange Place in Jersey City and Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken.

“The effect of the light rail system in Hudson County cannot be overstated,” Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise said at Wednesday’s event. “The state has been wise enough to make investments in our system.”

Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner said light rail has been an invaluable resource for residents who don’t drive. “Many people don’t have cars and rely on public transportation such as the bus or rail system,” he said.

He also envisioned the light rail system extending further north.
“Someday we’ll ... get to Bergen County,” Turner said.

NJ Transit seems odd to me. It's not uncommon for a whole metropolitan area to be covered by a single transit operator but I've never heard of an entire state or province that includes a number separate urban and suburban areas to administered by the same operator. Anyone know if there is another example of this in NA?

I believe that statewide agencies exist in Maryland, Delaware, Rhode Island, and Connecticut as well. Considering the size of these states, it seems like it is easy to operate a transit system in this manner.

That being said, NJ Transit doesn't run everything in the state. There are a fair amount of private operators that decide their own fares and routes, and there are also van/minibus services that mimic some of the more popular NJT bus routes and bring riders to New York.

Similarly, the operations in CT and MD seem to be supplanted by other operations, both public and private, but it appears that they make up a minority of the transit services in those states.

It appears that they are already running the extended, 5 section trains. They can be seen in the first picture of post 95 and the third picture of post 98.
