Progress is visible Tuesday on Tiger Lane looking westward from Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. The project is moving at a rapid pace, with workers finishing concrete at the east end of the site, preparing landscape and painting stripes on parking lots. Tiger Lane, which will offer about 600 tailgating spots, is part of the $15 million reworking of the fairgrounds area surrounding the stadium.

Demolition begins at site of failed 28-acre Midtown Memphis development
By Tom Bailey Jr.
Memphis Commercial Appeal

Demolition workers have started removing the blight of the failed Washington Bottom development in Midtown. "I'm extremely pleased that Lehman Brothers has stepped up to the plate," neighborhood activist Candice Hawkinson said of the bank holding company that owns 38 vacant buildings on about 28 acres southeast of Poplar and Cleveland.

The Washington Bottom development was approved a few years ago for an area bounded by Poplar, McNeil, Court and Cleveland. But the project never materialized and neighbors complained that the site had become an eyesore, with some buildings inhabited by squatters. The property was scheduled to be cleaned up more than a year ago, but little has happened other than the addition of a security fence. However, demolition work began this week on McNeil, where Frank Shaw of Memphis Wrecking Co Inc. finishes off three houses Thursday.

‘South Main’s Got It’
Arts district thrives despite ever-changing landscape
STACEY WIEDOWER | Special to The Daily News

The South Main Historic Arts District could be viewed as a microcosm of all of Downtown. In decades past, it experienced a heyday and a dramatic decline. In recent years, it’s made a slow but thorough comeback.

The South Main Historic Arts District has its share of art, but now the district is evolving into a more complete neighborhood with boutiques and restaurants.

Part of the charm of the South Main Historic Arts District is the storefronts filled with everything from art to clothing to coffee.

MedVet Memphis Builds New Cordova Facility
KATE SIMONE | The Daily News

http://memphisdailynews.com/editoria....aspx?id=52472

MedVet Memphis LLC has applied for a $3 million permit to build a 17,700-square-foot, two-story facility at 555 Trinity Creek Cove. The office will replace MedVetís current facility at 850 N. Germantown Parkway, suite 105. Land is currently being cleared to prepare for building the facility, said Katie Wassmer of Thompson & Berry PR, which represents MedVet.

MedVet is the only veterinary hospital within 200 miles with full-time board-certified veterinary specialists, a designation given to vets who have undergone several additional years of training to specialize in fields such as oncology or dermatology. The new facility will house eight exam rooms and a double surgery suite, as well as equipment for CT scans, ultrasounds and endoscopy procedures; a Wi-Fi-equipped waiting room; a boardroom; and meeting space for more than 70 people.

Memphis-based archimania designed the facility to be calming to pets and owners. Features include larger exam rooms and natural light. The facility is within walking distance of the Shelby Farms off-leash dog park, and MedVet plans to partner with the park throughout the year for events and special offers, Wassmer said. Though specific plans havenít been made yet, Wassmer said Shelby Farms and MedVet share the goal of helping animals.

Known the world over for its rich music history, Memphis waves high the banner the “Home of the Blues” and “Birthplace of Rock ’n’ Roll.” Hosea “M Town” Mays, director of social networking site Memphisrap.com, wants to create a similar recognition of the city’s current music scene, particularly its viable hip-hop industry. “I hope we can get to where we’re not so focused on the past and our history of music, but also what’s modern and going on today in this city,” Mays said.
