Luxor, the City of Palaces, counts among the world's greatest open-air museum. If offers awe-inspiring monuments alongside more homely pleasures, riding a horse-drawn caleche along the Corniche, sailing a felucca across the Nile and even taking to the air in a hot-air balloon.

Haphazard development, though, has unfortunately compromised some of Luxor's charms. In response, Luxor City Council launched a comprehensive development plan three years ago, one of the aims of which is to pedestrianise the Corniche.

The 10-month Corniche Development Project has been designed by Ain Shams University's Faculty of Engineering and is being implemented by the army. It is budgeted at LE250 million, LE150 million provided by the Tourism Development Fund and the remaining LE100 million in the form of a European grant.

Samir Farag, head of Luxor City Council, explains that the project will be executed in three stages. The first, already completed, aimed at sprucing up the city's backstreets, enlarging and re- paving them and installing new lighting in order to facilitate the flow of traffic from the Corniche. The latter, says Farag, is to be left for pedestrians "to enjoy walking peacefully within the gates of Egypt's ancient history and enjoy looking at the vast Nile". Temples on the East Bank, he told Al-Ahram Weekly, will eventually front directly on the river, as the ancient Egyptians intended.

The second phase, due to start in January, will divide the Corniche into three lanes, two reserved for emergency services and the third for horse drawn carriages. In places the Corniche will be widened to 14 metres, and several luxurious, and very expensive, 100-bed hotels are planned. Floating wooden sidewalks will be provided so pedestrians might feel they are walking on the deck of a boat.

The façades of buildings overlooking the Corniche will, says Farag, be made of sandstone and lit in a manner that makes them appear old. Both Luxor and Karnak temples will in the future be accessed direct from the Nile, and docks will be constructed to allow tourists to disembark. The plan is eventually to restrict transit between the monuments on both banks of the river to feluccas.

On the West Bank a dock is already under construction. When complete, says Farag, it will be able to handle 10,000 a day. Bus and car parks are also being built, alongside places for camels and horses to be tethered, and bicycles chained.

The plans, however, have met with criticism from some quarters, with complaints that they may further compromise the atmosphere of the city which they purport to protect.

Farag has no truck with the critics, pointing out that the plans have been approved by UNESCO and that a delegate from the organisation is due in Luxor next month to assess the most recent additions to the project.

Love it! Really important project and will go a long way. Best thing too, its an all egyptian project designed by Ain Shams University's Faculty of Engineering and being built by Egyptians. Good to see we can depend on ourselves, and not need international companies to do the work for us

مبارك يفتتح قريبا مشروع تطوير كورنيش الأقصر

القاهرة فى 13 يناير/أ ش أ/ يفتتح الرئيس حسنى مبارك مشروع تطوير وترميم طريق الكباش بمدينة الأقصر بعد إستكماله فى شهر مارس المقبل، وهو المشروع الذى سيسهم فى تحويل الأقصر إلى متحف عالمى مفتوح.
صرح بذلك اليوم محافظ الأقصر الدكتور سمير فرج عقب الاجتماع الذى عقده رئيس مجلس الوزراء بمكتبه لمتابعة المخطط الشامل لتطوير الأقصر بعد تحويلها إلى محافظة.
حضر الاجتماع وزراء الثقافة والداخلية والإتصالات والإستثمار والسكان والسياحة ومحافظ الأقصر ورئيس المجلس الأعلى للآثار.
وقال محافظ الأقصر الدكتور سمير فرج إنه عرض على رئيس مجلس الوزراء خطة تأمين مدينة الأقصر بآلات التصوير التليفزيونية من خلال شبكة اليكترونية حديثة مغلقة وبحيث تصبح أول مدينة فى مصر يتم تأمينها الكترونيا..ومن المتوقع تنفيذ هذا المشروع خلال عام .
وأضاف :إنه ناقش مع الدكتور نظيف خطة تحويل مدينة الأقصر إلى مدينة صديقة للبيئة عن طريق تنفيذ مجموعة من الخطوات من بينها تحويل العربات والمركبات لإستخدام الغاز الطبيعى حيث أبدت وزارة البيئة إستعدادها لتحمل تكلفة تحويل المركبات من إستخدام البنزين والسولار إلى الغاز الطبيعى الذى وصل بالفعل إلى محافظة الأقصر ، مما يشجع على البدء فى تنفيذ هذا المشروع الذى يشمل أيضا تحويل المراكب والفنادق العائمة للعمل بالغاز بدلا من السولار حفاظا على البيئة، حيث يصل عدد الفنادق العائمة إلى 180 فندقا .
وأوضح الدكتور سمير فرج أن خطوات تحويل الأقصر لمدينة صديقة للبيئة تشمل أيضا تنفيذ برنامج لتطبيق إستخدامات الطاقة الشمسية فى المدينة وفقا لدراسة تعدها وزارة التعليم العالى والبحث العلمى ، وكذلك تطبيق دراسة علمية أعدتها إحدى المؤسسات البيئية العالمية للتخلص من المخلفات الصلبة،إلى جانب التوسع فى المساحات الخضراء واقامة الحدائق بالتعاون مع وزارة البيئة واليونسكو وذلك للحد من الانبعاثات الضارة .
وأكد المحافظ أن تحويل الأقصر لمدينة صديقة للبيئة سيسهم فى زيادة عدد السياح فيها خاصة مع تزايد الوعى البيىء فى العالم .
وتابع:إنه عرض أيضا خلال الاجتماع خطة تطوير كورنيش الأقصر التى تنفذها القوات المسلحة ليصبح متنفسا ورئة للسكان والسياح،إلى جانب عرض مشروع المثلث الذهبى الذى يشمل تطوير معبد الأقصر ومعبد الكرنك وطريق الكباش .
وأعلن محافظ الأقصر عن برنامج طموح لإستضافة الأقصر عدد من البطولات الرياضية العالمية خاصة بعد أن إفتتح الرئيس مبارك مؤخرا الصالة المغطاة والتى تسمح بإقامة بطولات فى الأماكن المغلقة مثل المصارعة والملاكمة والجمباز ورفع الأثقال ..وقال:أن أولى هذه البطولات ستستضيفها محافظة الأقصر فى شهر مارس المقبل حيث تقام بطولة العالم لتنس الطاولة للناشئين بعد أن وافق الإتحاد الدولى على إقامتها بالأقصر ، كما ستستضيف الأقصر فى شهر أكتوبر من العام المقبل البطولة الدولية للتجديف.
وأضاف:إن هناك أيضا مشروعات ثقافية عديدة ستستضيفها الأقصر من بينها عرض إيطالى لإستضافة الأقصر لأوبرا إيطالية تدور حول توقيع رمسيس الثانى لأول إتفاقية سلام فى العالم.
وأوضح المتحدث بإسم مجلس الوزراء الدكتور مجدى راضى أن الإجتماع ناقش مخطط التنمية الشاملة والمتكاملة فى الأقصر ليشمل المحافظة بشكل واسع بعد ضم مركزى أرمنت وإسنا، بعد أن كان المخطط السابق يركز على مدينة الأقصر التاريخية ، حيث أكد الدكتور نظيف ضرورة أن يتم تنفيذ مخطط التنمية الشامل على المركزين الجديدين أرمنت وإسنا وبشكل يحقق التنمية المتكاملة بالمركزين إستفادة من المزايا النسبية لكل مركز.
وقال إن الدكتور نظيف وعد بأن تشمل زياراته المقبلة لمحافظة الأقصر المراكز التى تضمها المحافظة للتعرف على أرض الواقع على مشروعات الإستثمار والتنمية وبرامج تقديم الخدمات للمواطنين فى مختلف مناطق المحافظة وليس فى مدينة الأقصر وحدها.
وتابع:إن رئيس المجلس الأعلى للآثار الدكتور زاهى حواس أشار إلى قيام ستة فرق متخصصة فى الحفائر تضم ألف عامل بإزالة التعديات على طريق الكباش وسيتم الإنتهاء من العمل فى هذا الطريق قريبا ليعود إلى رونقه السابق.
ومن جانبه أشار وزير الإستثمار الدكتور محمود محى الدين إلى أن وزارته ستطرح كراسة الشروط لتنفيذ مشروع المرسى السياحى على المستثمرين قريبا حتى يمكن تنفيذ المشروع قريبا والذى يهدف إلى زيادة عدد السياح.

تحويل كورنيش الأقصر لممشي سياحي بين المعابد

استقبل د . أحمد نظيف رئيس مجلس الوزراء د . دانيال بيني مستشار اليونسكو بمحافظة الأقصر ود . سمير فرج وناقش الاجتماع مراجعة المشاريع التي تدعمها اليونسكو، حيث عرض د . نظيف توسيع الكورنيش بشكل يسمح لأن يكون ممشي سياحيا يمتد بين معبدي الأقصر والكرنك، وتقليل الحركة المرورية وقصرها علي الحالات الضرورية كالإسعاف، وربط هذه الطريق بطريق الكباشي بشكل يسهل علي السياح الانتقال بين المعالم السياحية المختلفة .

وشدد نظيف خلال الاجتماع علي أهمية إزالة مواقف المراسي والمراكب لما تتركه من تلوث، معربًا عن تقديره لليونسكو في إحيائها لمشروع طريق الكباشي .

كما ناقش الاجتماع تطوير المرسي العائم الذي سيحقق هدف وقف رسو المراكب وتلويثها المدينة والمنطقة السياحية بالإضافة إلي زيادة قدرة المراكب السياحية بالأقصر .

"نظيف" يستعرض سير العمل فى مشروعات التطوير بالأقصر

استعرض رئيس مجلس الوزراء الدكتور.أحمد نظيف 3 تقارير حول تطوير سير العمل فى مشروعات التطوير التى تجرى بمحافظة الأقصر، وذلك خلال لقائه اليوم الخميس مع محافظ الأقصر سمير فرج.

وقال الدكتور مجدى راضى، المتحدث الرسمى باسم مجلس الوزراء، إن التقارير تضمنت سير العمل فى مشروعى تطوير الكورنيش وطريق الكباش بمدينة الأقصر والتقرير الثالث تضمن تطور سير العمل فى إسنا وأرمنت.

وأضاف أن المحافظ أوضح أن هناك تطورا ملحوظا فى عملية تطوير طريق الكباش وينتظر الانتهاء منه خلال العام المقبل، تمهيدا لافتتاحه فى احتفالية عالمية فى حضور الرئيس حسنى مبارك.
