Does Ostrava airport has enough air traffic to justify a dedicated railway line?
How many daily departures/arrivals has Ostrava airport?

Which frequency is planned for the train service?

It doesn't have enough air traffic. But it might get more with a dedicated railway. The Airport in Ostrava has slept in the time when any other airport was busy with getting the low cost airlines. Due to a stupid policy of supporting the Czech Airlines, they did not make contracts with low cost airlines.

The situation is slowly turning around, e.g. they signed Ryanair. Substantial number of the (250 - 300 K) passengers were from the charter flights (100 - 200 K). The total capacity is 1 M passengers. There is also a cargo operation (3 Kt).

There should be dally 9 trains from Ostrava to Mošnov and 9 trains the other way. Mošnov stop could not be on the main line between Ostrava and Brno due to the horrendous costs of such a solution. It uses a dead end switch from the Studénka (on the Ostrava - Brno line) - Příbor - Kopřivnice regional train line. I would say that the train should be going Ostrava - Mošnov (cabin switch) - Kopřivnice - Frenštát.

(Edit: the line to Frenštát is not electrified, so it won't be like this , and the parameters of the rest of the track are rather poor and don't allow big units).

The airport had daily some 700 passangers on average and CD plans to operate there CitiElefants with 350 passengers capacity... A bit of a overkill, yeah. But there is also big industrial park growing up in Mošnov. We will see, whether they will be carrying air in place of people.

In fact looking at the map, it could make a very nice circle. Unfortunately, those tracks are not fully electrified and I am not sure what kind of adjustment this would need in Věřovice.

Ostrava - Studénka - Mošnov - Kopřivnice - Frenštát - Frýdlant - Frydek Místek - Ostrava, utilizing also the smaller stops and all the stations in Ostrava.

Don't know whether CD is thinking about this. It would combine the airport connection with the tourist connection to the Beskydy mountains. And it could allow for twice more frequent connection to all the stops. I would definitely like to see such a plan.

It will be the only airport in the CZ with a train stop, though.

Theoretically, also the passengers from Olomouc and Brno should be able to take hourly train to the airport, changing in Studénka.

Mošnov switch.

What I would like to see.

And despite very late arrival in London this connection became big success where half flights is completely sold out while remaining offer only high price seats. In the same time Ryanair flights to London from Brno are fully available with many cheap tickets. I would assume that Ryanair should / eventually will increase flights from Ostrava.

Well I don't know real service pattern but between the lines I've read that they plan to create in Mosnov regional hub with trains every hour. Thus I expect that trains from Verovice will either end at airport offering door to door transfer with trains to Ostrava or will continue after direction change to Studenka. Either way not many additional train kilometre with much improved service.

In Verovice You would need to build triangular junction so that this would function as present layout would require time consuming shunting movements. Although I don't see that option as particularly interesting as no one would make round trip to airport (Frydek-Mistek) while smaller communities along the way can simply change at Verovice. At first glance round lines tend to be ideal as in theory connect all but in reality they simply don't serve any connection well thus it is better to offer linear connections. Ostrava - Airport is OK, from Airport You can offer diesel trains up to Valasske Mezirici while extending all trains Ostrava - Frenstad pod Radhostem to Verovice would provide connections there.

Both commuter lines that Iwan posted run every 30 minutes.

Tendering underway for German-Czech link
Monday, November 03, 2014

The abandoned line at Selb Plössberg

GERMAN infrastructure manager DB Networks has issued a tender notice for a contract to reinstate the German section of the short cross-border link between Selb, Germany, and Aš in the Czech Republic

The rebuilding of the 7.6km line will include the upgrading of Selb Plössberg and Aš stations, renewal of signalling, and construction of a new bridge over state road 2179 near Erkenreuth. Work on the Czech side of the border is being implemented by Czech infrastructure manager SŽDC.

The project is due to be completed by the end of next year and will enable trains to run direct from the Bavarian town of Hof to Cheb in the Czech Republic

It seems that the railway station in Havířov will be demolished as it did not get a status of protected building of historical architectonic value that would mean that the station will be reconstructed instead. The station was build in 1969 in Brussels style.

The station requires high maintenance costs, it is rather neglected and reconstruction would be probably costlier than building new station from the scratch. The usages is also quite smaller than what the station was projected for.

Anyway, I find it rather pity that the building would not get a chance for a efficient, sensitive and nice reconstruction that could give the station also some other use to justify its size.

The station would be replaced with something like this:

Just a friendly reminder that Brussels style is a term used in the Czech language for art, design and architecture occuring in the late 50's. It got its name after the Brussels 58 Expo.

Since he failed to post a proper link, this is what the loco looks like:

http://zpravy.aktualne.cz/ekonomika/...b002590604f2e/

Personally I've never been a huge fan of the Vectron design.

Did RJ actually buy the loco or is it just leased from ELL?
