100 MW Wind power mill by State Bank of India

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

SBI would consume all the energy generated through the windmills

For each windmill SBI has invested around

Rs. 10 crore.

COIMBATORE: State Bank of India in the next few years will generate 100 MW through wind energy as part of its go-green initiative, its Chairman O.P. Bhatt announced on Friday.

The bank was in the process of installing 15 MW now. It would add another 20 MW by next year, he said while talking to journalists after inaugurating the windmills at Panapatti near Pollachi.

Green initiative

“It is first such initiative by any public sector bank. Through the process the State Bank of India has joined the community of those who work for a better, greener world,” he said. The 10 windmills are spread over Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat and a few other states.

The Bank had been thinking of going green for quite sometime and as part of the process was training and sensitising employees.

Workshops

It had conducted several workshops for the purpose, he said and added that the green initiative did not stop with wind energy alone but also extended to using energy-efficient lighting and water-saving technologies.

Loan

Mr. Bhatt said that the Bank had also gone to the extent of offering loan at concessional rate for those industries and commercial establishments that implemented cleaner, greener technology and adopted clean development mechanism.

SBI would consume all the energy generated through the windmills and had no plan to sell it to power utilities.

It had chosen to install 100 MW because the bank's total consumption was more or less the same quantum.

Cost of generation

The cost of generation was between 10 and 15 paise a unit and the Bank would recover the cost within four years of installation.

Energy generated thereafter was absolutely free and would help the bank save substantially.

Investment

For each windmill SBI invested around Rs.10 crore.

Carbon credit

Mr. Bhatt said that the 15 MW came from 10 windmills of 1.5 MW each and the amount of carbon credit earned was equivalent to 27,000 tonnes.

Tulsi R. Tanti, Chairman and Managing Director, Suzlon Energy Ltd., said the company was happy to partner State Bank of India.

It had around 55 per cent market share in India by erecting mills to generate 6,000 of the 11,000 MW.

India's potential, as per the Ministry of Non-Renewable Energy Resources estimates, was around 45,000 MW.

SBI Managing Directors S.K. Bhattacharyya and R. Sridharan were present .

100 MW in 5 years. It would be gone by the moment it is generated. That's how badly we want thousands of MW.

This may be a good move by SBI to improve its 'green' face but its time these highly profit making PSUs invest in the power sector by rapidly funding major power projects.

Smile Kaadhula poo (flower in your ear)

Annual capacity addition of 2,000 MW from next year

http://www.hindu.com/2010/04/25/stor...2553430400.htm

This will go on for four years, says TNEB chief
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu will witness an annual capacity addition of 2,000 megawatt (MW), starting from next year, C.P. Singh, Chairman, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, said on Saturday.

The increase in capacity addition would go on for four years. The projection was based on power generation projects that had taken off. He expressed the hope that the Kodankulam nuclear power project would be commissioned.

Addressing a function at the TNEB headquarters here, Mr. Singh released two publications of the Centre for Asia Studies on the power scenario in the State and nuclear power in the country.

Demand-supply gap

Acknowledging that the gap between demand and supply was 3,000 MW, the TNEB chairman said that apart from the production from the Board's stations and other sources, it was purchasing power in the range of 2,000 MW to 2,500 MW.

ETA plans thermal power plant in Tamil Nadu

http://www.business-standard.com/ind...l-nadu/393069/

The company is in the process of acquiring 500 acres in Nagapattinam district for the project

ETA Power Generation Ltd, part of $6.5 billion ETA Ascon Star Group, is planning to invest around Rs 5,200 crore for setting up a 2X660 Mega watt (Mw) power plant in Tamil Nadu. This would mark the group’s entry into the power generation business in India.

Speaking to Business Standard, AA Sadagopan, director, ETA Power Generation Ltd, said the company was in the process of acquiring 500 acres of land in Nagapattinam district for the proposed thermal-based project.

We are planning to opt for project clearance once the land acquisition is over, which is in the final stage,” he added. The project is scheduled to be completed by March 2014 and the second unit would take six to nine months after the completion of the first phase, he added.

ETA Power is currently in talks with Power Trading Corporation to sell its produce.

Sadagopan said the equity portion for the project will be around 20-30 per cent.

“The proposed project will be our first step in India on power generation. We plan to increase the production capacity to 2,000 Mw in 2-3 years,” he said. The focus would be on the east coast of the country for new projects.

Meanwhile, ETA Power is planning to source around 5 million tonnes of coal from Indonesia and is likely to handle the imported coal at Nagapattinam port.

The company has received licence for setting up a 100 Mw Hydro-based power plant in Himachal Pradesh. “We are also considering solar and gas,” added Sadagopan.

“Tamil Nadu a leader in wind energy generation”

http://www.hindu.com/2010/04/30/stor...3052940400.htm

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu is a leader in wind energy and this has to be replicated in sectors such as solar and bio-mass, said speakers at a conference on ‘Mainstreaming Green Energy – wind, biomass and solar' on Thursday.

Delivering the keynote address, Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TNEDA), Chairman and Managing Director, R. Christodas Gandhi said, “Tamil Nadu has been playing a key role in renewable energy. We have nearly reached 100 per cent of our wind mill potential. Out of the 5,000 MW assessed in the State, we have an installed capacity of 4,889 MW as of March 2010. This accounts for 30 per cent of renewable energy installed capacity in the country and its contribution to the southern grid is 11 per cent.

Mr. Gandhi said, “It is not going to end here as we have exhausted only 26 out of 41 sites in the State. We are now stepping into the second stage of wind mill development. The scope is more to go forward. We are yet to explore the issue of raising the height of wind mill mast, installing it offshore and along the coast. We will now replicate our success in solar side too.”

GEL planning to set up power project in TN

http://beta.thehindu.com/business/co...icle421627.ece

GEMAC Energy Ltd. (GEL), a nascent venture of the closely-held GEMAC, is planning to set up a coal-based power project near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu.

The project will have a total capacity of 1320 MW. It will be implemented in two phases of 660 MW each.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in three years. It is projected to reach full capacity in five years.

The project is estimated to involve a total investment of around Rs. 6,000 crore. The debt component of the project could be in the vicinity of 75 per cent, according to officials of the newly-formed company.

Kumaran Nagasundaram and Shanmuganathan N., who are directors GEMAC, are believed to be the principal force behind the power project. Company officials informed presspersons that the two were agriculturists and held huge tracks of farm land. Set up in December last, GEL boasts of an array of top-notch professionals. K. Thiruppathi, who served as the Managing Director of TPL and also as the President of Sterlite Industries, has been roped in as the Chairman of GEL. N. Srinivasan, former Executive Director of NLC (Power Division), is its Vice-Chairman. Kishore Arcot, former head of the power SBU of Vedanta Group, is the CEO of GEL.

Mr. Thiruppathi said that the GEMAC Group had inked a memorandum of understanding with SEPCO III of China, a leading EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contractor, to scout for joint opportunities in the Indian power sector. In this context, he said SEPCO III would assist GEL in the proposed coal-based power project. Mr. Arcot insisted that GEL was also exploring the possibility of a financial partnership with SEPCO III besides the EPC relationship. The project would be in the nature of producer of merchant power, they insisted. The land for the project had already been acquired, they claimed. On sourcing the coal needs, the officials indicated that the coal could be imported from Indonesia. They also said that the project would house a desalination plant.

Spic to revive Tuticorin power project

http://www.business-standard.com/ind...roject/394506/

Spic Electric Power Corporation (Private) Ltd (SEPC), a subsidiary of Tamilnadu Petroproducts Limited (TPL), has decided to go ahead with its earlier plan of setting up a power plant at Tuticorin in the state.

The project, conceived in 1995, was shelved nine years ago due to dispute over land. It was estimated to cost Rs 2,300 crore in 1995.

SEPC has now identified an alternative site and is seeking clearance from the environment and forest ministry. The new site has been approved by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, Tuticorin Port Trust and the Central Electricity Authority, according to sources.

Demarcations under the Coastal Zone Regulation, Contour Survey, preliminary soil investigation have also been completed. “The process of obtaining environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests for setting up the project is at an advanced stage. SEPC will pay the arrears of lease rentals on taking possession of the land,” they said.

SEPC and an investor company signed a shareholders and share subscription agreement on May 28, 2009, for the implementation of the project. The investor company has agreed to bring in 74 per cent of the equity to the project.

A detailed project report with a revised cost is under consideration by SEPC, TPL said. TPL is promoted by Southern Petrochemical Industries Corporation (Spic).

Thumbs up Udangudi thermal power project all set to take off

http://www.hindu.com/2010/05/17/stor...1755090400.htm

CHENNAI: The Rs.9,000-crore Udangudi super critical thermal power project in Tuticorin district is all set to take off as the Union Environment and Forests (E&F) Ministry's Expert Appraisal Committee has recommended the project to the Ministry for environmental clearance, which is critical to the project execution.

Executed through the Udangudi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL), a joint venture company floated by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), the power project will have two units of 800 megawatt (MW) each. The plant's efficiency will be higher than the conventional technology, involving less coal utilisation, because of the super critical thermal technology. The project will be implemented over an extent of 760 acres of poromboke land, for which the State government has granted “enter upon” permission. There is no habitation in the vicinity, according to the project promoter.

Senior officials involved in the project, say the Ministry's formal notification is expected in a couple of weeks. As the crucial stage has been passed, the UPCL will hold a meeting of prospective investors shortly to discuss the issue of funding. As of now, TNEB and BHEL will contribute 26 per cent each.

The officials say public sector banks and institutions such as Power Finance Corporation and Rural Electrification Corporation, both coming under the control of the Union Power Ministry, have evinced interest in the project. The Project Appraisal Committee has stipulated a number of conditions. The UPCL should examine in detail the possibility of adopting low temperature thermal desalination (LTTD) process for sea water desalination, enlisting the assistance of the National Institute of Ocean Technology. In case this is not feasible, a detailed explanation should be submitted.
