Yes, Myton Bridge was 3 lanes each way until 2007 when the Queen Street, Market Place crossroads was got rid of. However only 2 of those lanes were 'through' lanes. Heading west, the right lane was for turning right into the old town so outside of rush hour it wasnt that well used. Going east, the left hand lane across the bridge was for turning left at the approaching roundabout and going up Great Union Street. So i dont think that reducing it to 2 lanes each way has affected congestion that much as there are still 2 'through' lanes which there always has been. However the good thing is that theres is enough space on the bridge for a 3rd 'through' lane providing space can be created at the Market Place Junction for some slip roads.

End in sight to misery of A63 traffic jams? – MP Johnson meets Transport Secretary

Hull Daily Mail - 12th May 2011

MOTORISTS who suffer the daily misery of the clogged A63 are being told an end could be in sight.

Hull West and Hessle MP Alan Johnson is meeting Transport Secretary Philip Hammond today to urge him to allow preparatory work for the £200 million redevelopment of Castle Street to begin.

As reported, the Government announced last year that the long-awaited scheme was being delayed until at least 2015 because there was no funding available.

However, Mr Hammond said he expected the scheme to go ahead at a later date.

He is due to meet Mr Johnson and officials from Hull City Council today to discuss the future of the scheme.

Mr Johnson said: "Castle Street is part of a really important route which goes across the whole county and is the only place where traffic grinds to a halt every day.

Unhappy

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-13399930

Thousands of people have taken the chance to walk through a road tunnel under a Surrey beauty spot before 30,000 vehicles-a-day start using it.

The £370m tunnel, which will open to traffic in July, is designed to relieve the Hindhead traffic bottleneck.

..........

kindof rubs it in doesn't it?

It certainly does! All to protect a 'surrey beauty spot'
Yet we have a major busy road separating two separate sides of the city centre and a road that is going to get even more busy in the next few years.

Hang your heads in shame head of transport

Well, it was also the only single carriageway section (complete with traffic lights in the middle of Hindhead) on the main road from the M25 to Portsmouth, so something of a horrendous bottleneck. The Devil's Punch Bowl is a rather large natural ampitheatre, SSSI and National Trust site and it was obviously deemed that a dual carriageway above ground next to it would interfere with it to an unacceptable degree. I suspect a tunnel is also the only feasible way of avoiding the running of a large dual carriageway through the village with consequent propery acquisition, as well as providing a more smooth and better graded road alignment and allowing the old road to be returned to heathland. So all in all it seems to be the only feasible option.

It's not as clear cut as just indulging wealthy Surrey by building a huge and expensive tunnel to improve the view whilst the needier north/Hull is left alone. Believe it or not, even in the south east there is no way such a project would be taken forward on those grounds alone.

'Toll rise will fuel campaign to buy Humber Bridge'
Wednesday June 15 2011 - Hull Daily Mail

Price rise: The Humber Bridge toll booths.

THE businessman trying to buy the Humber Bridge and reduce tolls believes increased charges will galvanise support for his plan.

The Department For Transport has agreed to a public inquiry inspector's recommendation to approve the Humber Bridge Board's application to increase the tolls.

The bridge will become the most expensive toll crossing in Britain after increases of more than 11 per cent were approved.

It means the cost of crossing the bridge will rise from £2.70 to £3 each way for cars.

The bridge board yesterday released a statement saying it welcomed the move.

Commercial property company owner Malcolm Scott, who wants to buy the bridge and create a new community interest company to run it, said: "What better boost can there be to reduce the tolls than an announcement like this?

Everyone is calling for tolls to be reduced or scrapped. This will galvanise opinion further.

"This move is nonsensical with all the other opportunities coming to the region.

"To have a toll in the first place is bad enough, but for the board to 'welcome' an increase flies in the face of all the hard work in creating a local enterprise partnership and other investment."

A63 upgrade: Minister promises to do 'everything he can'

Friday, June 24, 2011 - Hull Daily Mail

Slow going: Congestion in Castle Street, Hull.

A MINISTER has said he will do "everything he can" to bring forward proposals to upgrade Hull's busiest road.

Transport Minister Mike Penning made the surprise claim after Hull East MP Karl Turner pressed the case for the proposed A63 improvement scheme, given the investment by Siemens in the city.

Siemens plans to invest millions of pounds to build off-shore wind turbines at the port and the city's Chamber of Commerce argue upgrading the road is vital to economic development.

But the Government has announced the long-awaited scheme to upgrade the A63 Castle Street would not go ahead before 2015.

Mr Turner tackled Ministers during transport questions at the House of Commons.

He said: "Is it not about time the Government became enthusiastic about the massive investment in my constituency and considered bringing forward plans to improve the A63?

"We are desperate for that."

In response, Mr Penning said that the Government is "very enthusiastic" about the scheme.

A63 Castle Street's £150m upgrade could start by 2015
.Wednesday, December 07, 2011 Hull Daily Mail
Follow.

A £150 MILLION upgrade of the A63 at Castle Street could begin within four years, the Government has claimed.

Roads Minister Mike Penning has given assurances funding for the long-awaited major road project in Hull is "still on the table".

'EARLY STAGE': Roads Minister Mike Penning made a pledge to city councillors that funding for the A63 Castle Street upgrade could still be available. Picture: Peter Harbour
.Mr Penning made the pledge during a meeting with city councillors and MPs after fears the scheme had hit the buffers.

Last night, Mr Penning said the Castle Street upgrade is still at an "early stage" so could not be accelerated along with the other transport schemes.

But he said a decision will be made shortly about whether to allocate money to the scheme for pre-construction work, including compulsory purchase orders and a public inquiry, to begin before 2015.

Mr Penning said: "It is still at a very early stage, so is not able to be accelerated for construction in this spending review period.

"However, we intend to allocate funding to a number of schemes to allow pre-construction work to take place ahead of delivery after 2015, ensuring schemes are ready to start as soon as possible.

"We will make a decision on this shortly."

Castle Street was conspicuous by its absence from a list of major road projects approved by the Department for Transport last week.

The list included two other regional upgrade schemes, including improvements to the A164 between the Humber Bridge and Beverley and the A180 on the South Bank, which were previously below Castle Street in the regional priority order decided by council leaders last year.

Five other projects nationwide, which like Castle Street had been earmarked for construction to begin in the next spending review period post 2015, were also given the go-ahead in the Chancellor's Autumn Statement. Speaking after the meeting, Hull East MP Karl Turner said: "The Minister confirmed that he would make money available in the New Year to get projects, such as the Castle Street upgrade, legally ready to be implemented.

"He confirmed that once the A63 project was at this stage, he would seriously consider funding the project in 2015.

"I am confident that funding for the A63 is still on the table and we are on track for 2015."

Government rejects council deal to halve Humber Bridge tolls
Tuesday 24th January 2012 - Hull Daily Mail

THE Government has rejected a deal that was put forward to halve the Humber Bridge tolls.

Chancellor George Osborne agreed last year to write-off £150 million of the £332 million Humber Bridge debt in order to halve the tolls.

After a meeting between local authority leaders on Friday, Hull City Council offered to underwrite the remaining Humber Bridge debt after a row with North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) about sharing the liability equally.

But the Mail understands the proposal has already been rejected by Department for Transport officials.

Now, the councils have been told to think again amid suggestions Hull City, East Riding and North Lincolnshire councils could attempt to go in alone and put forward a proposal to split the liability equally by a third, excluding NELC.

Humber Bridge tolls to be halved: April 1 date likely .Wednesday, February 15, 2012 AllisonCoggan
Follow. The Humber Bridge Board has today agreed to accept the Government's offer to write off £150m from the bridge's debt.

The board also agreed to a 50 per cent reduction in toll charges as part of the deal.

Humber Bridge tolls are set to fall from £3 to £1.50.
.It means tolls are likely to be reduced from April 1 with a single car crossing charge coming down from £3 to £1.50.

Today's decision is subject to final confirmation by the Government.

Bridge Board chairman Councillor David Gemmell said: "This has been a long time coming but, hopefully, things have now been sorted."

Castle Street A63 upgrade: Work to begin after roads minister gives cash

Hull Daily Mail - Tuesday, May 08, 2012

PRELIMINARY work of the long awaited £150 million Castle Street upgrade has been given the green light.

Roads Minister Mike Penning announced funding has been made available for development work on the A63 in Hull over the next three years.

The work is expected to include detailed design and order preparation, including compulsory purchase orders and public inquiries.

It means the scheme is more likely to be given the go-ahead by ministers in the next spending review period, which begins in mid 2015.

Yesterday showed why people question Hull City Council's ability to run a city, they don't do themselves any favours at times...

Did anybody else get caught up in the rush hour mess that was Park St junction?

Someone had crashed into the traffic lights at Park St junction in the early hours of Wednesday morning. By rush hour Wednesday night (giving the council 16 hours to install temporary lights), temporary lights hadn't been installed... it was mayhem! All Xmas shoppers trying to get out of St.Stephen's and onto Spring Bank but couldn't as without the lights, there wasn't any breaks in traffic, which resulted in mass queues onto Anlaby Rd, Argyle St and Ferensway too. It also meant extra traffic on an already busy Beverley Road (as Newland Ave closed for xmas lights switch on), as people seemed to be aiming to go to Ferensway/Beverley Rd to try escape the queues as every direction was gridlocked... no lights means no right of way. The police should've been out controlling traffic it was that bad.

...I took my fiancee into work at half 1 this afternoon, still no temporary lights!!! Someone had only just turned up to start clearing broken debris.

I went into St.Stephen's about 5ish, Spring Bank was moving fine, but because the lights were out, there was no gaps in traffic, so everyone coming from Park St couldn't get out and was queue'd right back to Londsborough Street.

I came back out about 20 past 6 and was stuck in St.Stephen's car park in a queue to get out, then the queue was still as long as it was when I went in, so went down Londsborough Street, then got stuck in a queue on Argyle Street to get out onto Spring Bank, it was a nightmare in all directions.

'Land bridge' over A63 Castle Street in Hull city centre to be raised with Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin
Trusted article source icon

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

Hull Daily Mail

AMBITIOUS proposals have been unveiled to create a "land bridge" over the A63 at Castle Street.

The idea of creating an improved pedestrian route between the city centre and Hull Marina and the old Fruit Market has been mooted before.

But city leaders now believe the best way to provide a safe crossing point over Hull's busiest road would be to extend long-term plans to lower Castle Street and construct a pedestrian link between Princes Dock Street and the marina.

Senior council figures and the city's three MPs are scheduled to meet Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin to discuss the proposal.

They aim to persuade Mr McLoughlin to include the land bridge scheme with the long-awaited £168m upgrade of the nearby Mytongate junction on the A63.

Councillor Martin Mancey, cabinet member for transport, said: "The Mytongate improvement scheme proposes lowering Castle Street to allow traffic between Ferensway and the Marina to cross above.

"We think it would make sense to extend the section of Castle Street being lowered to allow a separate land bridge to be constructed further along."
