Darlington Arena is the bastard child of the Stadium of Light and the Riverside.

Maybe it's just me, but the Rose Bowl has never looked like a stadium of 92,000+, especially on the inside (presumably because of the gentle slope of the stands)...

Same for Purdue University's Ross Ade Stadium which does not, to me, look like it can seat in excess of 62,000...

Not a stadium, but Allen Fieldhouse is a TINY building (the entire structure is only 344 by 254 feet!). Yet every game, the University of Kansas Men's basketball team plays in front of 16,300 fans. Although there are usually even more fans than that because last season, the Jayhawks averaged 16,350.

Something about the interior/exterior of the Alamodome has always seemed strange to me. Like the inside is larger than it appears or something.

My club's home ground, the Sunderland Stadium of Light.

Seen from most angles of approach the stands are very low and it appears small. The pitch is sunk 6 metres below ground level so you enter half way up the stand.

You would never think it holds 48,300

That's a 3 storey building in the near ground, which actually houses the clubs offices and ticketing facilities.

This stand is on the right of this picture;

And the outside of the main stand which most visitors never actually see, due to the transport routes bringing them in from the other side;

Loved our old ground at Roker Park, but this place has become home over the last 10 years. It's the people who make a sporting venue not the location or the architecture.

This one gives a good perspective on the 'tardis' effect;

On a completely random note, I bumped into Paul Michael Glazier at the roundabout south of the bridge in the bottom of that last picture prior to a match last season. He was appearing in panto at the Sunderland Empire and was just out for a walk. It was one of those surreal moments when you see someone you recognise in a very odd place. The place was very familiar to me but totally foreign to him. My mate spotted him and shouted, 'Hey Starskey', he turned around smiled and raised his hand in acknowledgement.

wel lthat was the first stage in the process to increase the valley to hold 40,600.

Those two stands make it look bigger because they are complete. it's the jimmy seed stand which is tiny

This picture shows it better

Yes I know that it has a smaller end stand, but I still think it looks bigger than it is.

Love the photos of the Valley.

As a Sunderland fan, I have been there three times and we also played in THAT GAME at Wembley!!

Is the Antigallican pub still there? Got to be one of the best names ever for a pub, although on the last occasion I was in there, the beer was so bad we went to an off license down the road and smuggled it in.

Looks more than 27,994 IMHO: (I think it's the tiers that cause this)

A lot of American stadiums use bleachers I think they're called instead of seats, so they hold a lot more.

And I can't find pictures, but this holds 50,000 and is apparently an all seater, only pic I can find.

Naghsh e Jahan Stadium in Iran that is.

This is true to a point...Yes, there are a lot of stadiums in the USA that use bleachers, which are sort of the American equivalent to terracing. But bleachers are nearly exclusive to high school and college athletics, you will rarely, if ever, see bleachers used in professional stadiums (only one I can think of off the top of my head is Lambeau Field).

But most stadiums that use bleachers have assigned seating with numbers just like if there were individual seats. Also most schools have programs where season ticket holders can buy individual padded seat backs that attach straight to the bleacher that end up taking up just as much room as a traditional seat would.

This is the best picture of bleachers with assigned numbers that I could find...this is Notre Dame Stadium.

And here is a picture of Nippert Stadium getting new seat backs for this past season.

And if you REALLY want to go in-depth here's a link to a photo gallery of the installation with some good detail shots of workers putting in the seat backs right onto the bleachers.
