Proposal by Edifice Architects for the upcoming Dhirubhai Ambani University:
(Click on the renders to view large) Dhirubhai Ambani University, Bhopal, India Edifice Consultants proposes master plan for Dhirubhai Ambani University Campus ![]() Dhirubhai Ambani University has outlined its vision to set up a campus on a 100 acres site at the outskirts of Bhopal, India. The university would offer graduate and doctoral programs in Information and Communication Technology. The brief outlined the need for a campus to nurture young minds in an environment that would create potential for intellectual and social exchange. At the same time it is imperative that the master plan would respect the context and celebrate the cultural identity of the historic city of Bhopal and be environmentally sensitive to the ecology. ![]() ![]() The site is set in a rural setting 15km from the Bhopal City Center. The hydrogeology study of the site reveals a depleted landscape and mostly patches of rocky sub base abundant with naturally occurring basalt. Natural rain water channels flows across the site from the hills at the North West corner gradually slopping to the east. The master plan responds to the brief by adhering to a multilayered planning approach with the intention to bind the built environments in a landscape which would enhance the physical network system of the campus. ![]() A natural system is weaved along the rainwater channels creating a preservation and landscape regeneration strategy which will eventually transform the existing landform. Water harvesting ponds are intertwined in this fluid landscape around which campus amenities are infused. Existing agricultural parcels are preserved within the site for on-site food production. The student and faculty housing and the core campus are placed strategically to generate a high level of pedestrian interconnectivity between them leading to several academic plazas and courts. The overall materiality and its color palette are derived from the varied patterns of the indigenous stones found in this region.

Procter & Gamble plans to manufacture products for the Indian market locally
14 Nov, 2011, 0253 hrs IST, Sagar Malviya, ET Bureau MUMBAI: Procter & Gamble plans to manufacture products for the Indian market locally, moving away from its decade-old strategy of importing a substantial proportion of goods, as the world's largest consumer goods maker seeks to emulate the cost structure of Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) At present, a substantial chunk of its goods including skincare brand Olay and baby diaper brand Pampers are imported into the Indian market, which is an expensive proposition, according to the company. More local production will result in P&G making products at low cost, that could translate into affordable products from the company, which has so far focused primarily on premium and mass premium products. "You should expect a large part of production locally in the long term, so that most of them are 'made in India' products, given the growing size and scale of our business," said Tapan Buch, chief financial officer at P&G Hygiene and Healthcare Ltd. Buch did not give the percentage of products currently being made outside India. In early 2000, P&G had started shifting production to low cost South East Asian countries from the US, closer to growth markets such as China and India. In a board meeting during first week of November, P&G Home Products, the unlisted unit the Cincinnati based consumer goods maker, approved an investment plan of Rs 360 crore in its unlisted arm. Earlier, in May, the company had approved an investment of Rs 345 crore, and this combined fund infusion of Rs 700 crore will be P&G's largest investment in India in a single year. Buch said the money will primarily go into sprucing up its existing multi-product manufacturing facility so that it can execute its strategy of reaching out to 'more consumers, in more parts of India, more completely.' "The funds will be utilized to expand our manufacturing base, primarily at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. The investments will be broad based in terms of categories and will purely depend on how capital intensive each segment is at the moment," Buch said. "For instance, we could invest more on baby care products as a major part of it is imported." An industry executive said Procter & Gamble (P&G) is scouting for land in Hyderabad and Chennai to set up two factories, but the company did not confirm it. Traditionally P&G in India have been focusing on premium brands Head & Shoulders, Ariel and Pantene, which are its cash cow and generates over 60% of its total revenues. But now, P&G is planning to target consumers across the pyramid, with products in laundry, hair and skin care straddling several pricepoints. It has doubled its distribution reach over the past couple of years and now has a direct reach of 1.3 million outlets, against HUL's direct reach of 1.6 million outlets. "Although India is only a small part of P&G's current portfolio, they are very focused on becoming more present in the emerging markets. India is a key priority for it as it continues to grow well-a growing population with growing incomes," said Ali Dibadj, senior analyst from US brokerage firm Sanford Bernstein. While developing markets account for just 30% of global sales for P&G, arch rival Unilever earns more than half of its revenues from India, Brazil, Indonesia, South Africa, China and Vietnam. P&G Global Chairman & CEO Robert McDonald's stated goal is to garner 800 million new customers by 2015, most of them from Asia and Africa. The target consumer in these markets is those earning less than Rs 100, or $2, a day. P&G has three subsidiaries in India. Two of its listed companies are Procter & Gamble Health & Hygiene, which markets feminine hygiene brand Whisper, and Vicks anti-cold balm and lozenges, and Gillette India, maker of razors and other shaving products. |

Albert David to set up a new manufacturing facility in Mandideep
Our News Bureau - Kolkata ![]() Kamal Prasad Mundhra Executive Director, Albert David Kolkata-based pharmaceutical company, Albert David, a unit of the Kothari group, is planning to set up a new manufacturing facility within its Mandideep factory complex in Madhya Pradesh. “We have firmed up plans to set up a WHO-certified, cGMP-compliant manufacturing within our Mandideep plant complex for our existing oral dosage forms and herbal products,” said Kamal Prasad Mundhra, executive director, Albert David. The company makes pharma formulations, bulk drugs and injections, and has three manufacturing plants--in Kolkata (for tablets and powder, small volume parenterals, oral liquids, bulk drugs), in Ghaziabad (for IV fluids in glass and polythene containers) and in Mandideep (disposable syringes and needles). The company expects to touch a turnover of Rs 250 crore this year, and plans to invest around Rs 60 crore in the new project. It also plans to manufacture and market new products in the gynaecological and lifestyle diseases segments. Raising concerns of possible viral transmission, the central government earlier this year had banned production and sale of 'Placentrex' (injection and gel). But the ban was later lifted after Albert David moved the Delhi High Court and a sub committee constituted by the government recommended “that there is no evidence of any bad effect on the patients of these drugs, after which the Central government issued a fresh notification on May 30 lifting the ban,'' Mundhra added. “The 55-year-old product is prescribed by several doctors in the country and there has been not been a single adverse side-effect till date. We test extensively for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, C viruses,” he said. In a signed communique to the medical practitioners, Mundhra has rubbished any apprehensions about the drug and reaffirmed the drug's efficacy and safety. “The company has given much thrust on its R&D initiatives. The R&D wing is involved in the development of newer products with maximum therapeutic values, while at the same time focusing on improving the quality of its existing products,” he said. Exuding confidence about the future, he said, “Albert David will continue to grow with the current strategies in place and is equipped to meet any future challenges.” he indicated that exports and an international thrust will be a key growth driver. |
