Florida is not all that developed though

Florida cities are not quite developed in the area of public (rail/bus) transportation - like for most states, it's cities are still very car-centric.

I'm just getting back to Jax after attending the American Planning Association's statewide conference, which was held in Orlando. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to tour a few Sunrail construction sites. Here are a few images.

The existing Amtrak station in Winter Park is being rebuilt to accommodate both Amtrak and Sunrail.

Sunrail platforms under construction at the Orlando Amtrak Station.

A glimpse of LYMMO BRT crossing tracks with Orlando Central Station's platform under construction in the background.

Look hard and you can see an Amtrak train passing in the background.

The Church Street station platform under construction.

An Amtrak train passes through the Florida Hospital Station.

Florida Hospital's new administration office tower under construction will include several shops and restaurants on the first two floors. Across the street (yellow crane), construction has recently broken ground on the Women's Hospital.

Thank you for the update Lakelander. May 2014 is right around the corner. Very excited to see SunRail infrastructure improvements changing the landscape of urban Orlando. The Florida Hospital stop is most impressive.

Yes -- most of the SunRail stations will be powered by solar energy.

Wow, the stations are looking really nice! In addition to the, the Meadow Woods station (part of phase 2) site is already getting prepped, the old plaza was torn down to make way for the station. Although exciting to see, I was a bit disappointed because the parking and plaza could have been restored and better connected with the station.

Also part of Phase II is the downtown Kissimmee station, which will have a direct connect with the new Intermodal Center linking SunRail, Lynx, Amtrak, and Greyhound.

Here are some recent images:

ThatFloridaDude, I think we're on the same page or close enough.

My issue is the lack of amenities and basics at the stations. Maybe I was too pampered at the stations over in the UK, but even the smallest of ones had restrooms, places to buy a paper, actual shading, etc. It looks like none of these stations have that and that is what really pisses me off when it comes to this or even the planned light rail lines over here in Tampa Bay. Like at least add restrooms so people can go piss while waiting for the train! Add some vending machines for snacks. A bike rack for people that ride their bikes to the stations. Like you said, too plain and I think that in a state that really can give two f*cks about any rail, this is what we get and "we should be happy with it".
