Pretty expensive one too.

The fact that a 142-year-old building could be mistaken for being new merely lends more credibility to traditional architecture. Bravo to those who carried out the restoration.

Very nice! I've never been to Charleston but from photos always thought it was one of the most European cities in the US. Definitely want to discover it!

Then I have to share this. Art deco-ish/post modern-ish. I like it.

Majestic Square, Charleston SC 1996

Are there attempts at the moment to create a new ornate style then? Sad to see cities like Paris forced into basically a complete standstill in their city centres because of modernism when they were massive in the development of Art Nouveau and such. Would love to see something that the citizens of cities like that could be proud to see constructed again.

I don't want classical architecture to make a return in the way that this thread shows, though I much prefer it to most modern buildings, but I want something entirely new which builds on those classical styles as we did in the past.

Actually Charleston is not at all European but rather very American. Unlike today when most buildings no longer reflect their location, at the time Charleston was developing it was also reflecting a very American view of architecture, though of course with the use of traditional classical elements which originated in Europe. If you get the chance you should go there it has much to offer and still retains a feel of the "Old South".

I agree with you but herein lies the problem - the vast majority of architects seem to be either unwilling or more likely unable to come up with something new that reflects the past yet at the same time is contemporary in feeling. The New York Architectural Firm of Robert A.M. Stern are probably the most talented and come closest in this regard. A lot of their work is not mere copies of past buildings but incorporates traditional elements in a professional and not kitschy way and importantly, uses traditional materials.
