Good point. It seems to the former Soviet Republics that have the worst examples of so-called "traditional" builds. Maybe it's a result of years and years of bleak concrete "commie block" architecture that has turned them towards the opposite end of the spectrum with over-the-top styles!

For those who do not understand - this is the joint work of Russian and French architects.

New cottage village "Deauville". This is one of many villages in the so-called Rublevka, where prefer to settle rich people.
It's located in the Odintsovo district - most ecologically clean and respectable district of the Moscow region. Location of the elite settlement is a large forest area of 64 hectares, of which 16 hectares of magnificent lake. Easy to reach, moving from Moscow ring road on the Minsk direction (with entrances from Minsk and the Mozhaisk highway). The path will be short, only 10-11 km..

In the village of Deauville more hundreds of cottages and townhouses. The Foundation for the projects of a significant part of residential areas and infrastructure formed sketches of French architects of the late XIX - early XX century, which became available due to archival materials. Also in the design of assistance and specialists of the French architectural workshops.

The location of the houses, their artistic design are carefully designed and created as a result of harmonious architectural ensemble, in every detail, feel the unity of style. But every facade of the unique. It is impossible not to mention the fact that this cottage village was designed and built taking into account the requirements to the security environment and the modern standard of living standards with a high level of comfort.

Yes, exactly. During most of the soviet rule architecture and city planning were in such a poor state than people hated modernist architecture as a whole and turned to the evergreen classic. But the ability to build it properly was mostly lost for these years so the result is evident. Stilll, there are some examples of good traditionalist architecture in the former USSR (many were in this thread) but they're overshadowed by tons of bad ones.
And I wouldn't agree that former Soviet Republics are total winners in the international competition for making the worst traditionalist pieces of architecture. Some Eastern Asian countries have very strong positions in this as well.

Those American University in Cairo buildings are a real mixed bag. Some of it looks like the postmodernism fashionable in the 80s and 90s, where traditional details were just tacked on, devoid of context, scale, or sense. It just goes to show you that it takes a certain skill to harmonize traditional materials and details with modern construction, a skill that most contemporary architects lack.
