Boost for Manchester`s Metrolink

Trams could be running to Exchange Square as early as next winter (2015/16), thanks to a major European grant.

Significant improvements to the way passengers can access the Deansgate-Castlefield stop will also be made, thanks to the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has had a £10.8 million ERDF bid approved, which will allow the first stage of Metrolink’s transformational Second City Crossing (2CC) programme to be completed before the rest of the line opens in 2017.

That will see the spur between Manchester Victoria and Exchange Square built by next summer which, subject to testing and commissioning, will give Metrolink the ability to run more trams between Shaw & Crompton and the city from winter 2015/16.

The ERDF funding will also transform the existing footbridge linking the Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink stop with Deansgate Railway Station.

In addition, a new lift and steps will be installed at the Deansgate end of the stop and a new pedestrian bridge and steps will be built at the Albion Street end.

Metrolink passengers are also set to benefit from a new inbound island platform and a new outbound platform at the Deansgate-Castlefield stop. Two new track cross-overs are being installed, allowing trams to turn back in both directions.

The Deansgate-Castlefield work will be complete by summer 2015, after which work to transform the St Peter’s Square stop will get under way.

Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the TfGM Committee, said: “This is fantastic news that has far reaching benefits.

“It means the early arrival of trams to Exchange Square, it means more trams for people travelling between Oldham and Manchester and it means the transformation of the Deansgate-Castefield stop.

“Most importantly of all, it means that we can start to realise some of the many benefits of Metrolink’s transformational Second City Crossing a lot sooner.”

Councillor Kate Chappell, Manchester City Council’s executive member for the environment, said: “Coming just days after the news that the new Metrolink line to Wythenshawe and Manchester Airport will open 12 months ahead of schedule, this is another exciting announcement demonstrating yet again that our public transport infrastructure is being transformed at a truly remarkable rate.

“This will provide real benefits to the thousands of people that come into the city centre by tram every day.

“It will enable additional services to run from north Manchester and Oldham, connecting more people with city centre jobs, as well as providing major improvements at one of the most well used stops on the network.”

Metrolink transformation works: Weekend update
22 July 2014

A large 350 tonne crane will lift sections of the new Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink stop track into place this weekend.

The major transformation works at the stop started earlier this year and will allow more flexible and frequent services to run through the city centre.

The Deansgate-Castlefield stop will be closed on Saturday and Sunday and – to make way for the crane – Whitworth Street West will be closed from Deansgate to Albion Street from 8pm Friday 25 July to 4am Monday 28 July.

Firstly people on the main manchester transport thread copy articles from various different sites and it's not an issue so the articles are merely putting them on the international thread.
Secondly the quoting of photos is good because the origanal posters may not know about this thread therefore they wouldn't share their photos on here. Of they're quoted as the user you mentioned does then the person who takes them gets credit, the main thread is linked to and the photos are shared to a wider audience.

Is the busway being built with future conversion to tramway in mind?

I don't think so no. It's more of a local tester for the concept of busways as an attempt to serve corridors that don't appear to justify a full light rail line. If it's successful the model is planned to be rolled out over a number of other corridors.

As a precursor to the Metrolink Second City Crossing Project (2CC) major modifications are in progress to provide a 3 track layout at Deansgate Castlefield stop adjacent to Manchester Central Exhibition and Conference Centre.

A major landmark in the work occurred on the morning of 26th August when the inbound calling point for trams was moved to the new island platform so that the old platform can be demolished to allow a new loop line to be constructed.

The platform is not finished but is functional.

Ramped access to and from the Manchester Central deck at the rear of the platform where the new inbound track will eventually be.

P1070049 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1070048 by sghyde, on Flickr

A shortcoming is that there is no step free access between the platforms yet which means those with restricted mobility have to over-travel to either Cornbrook or St Peters Square to cross between inbound and outbound. Signage is provided and announcements are being made. I assume this is temporary for a short period.

PIDS also inform of the access arrangements.

The canopies are not glazed at roof level yet but a makeshift plywood cover exists at the City end to provide some shelter. It is probably somewhat better than the old shelter.

A start has been made on dismantling the old platform by the afternoon of the 26th.

Finally in this Manchester update one of the biggest projects is the joint Network Rail and Transport for Greater Manchester redevelopment of Manchester Victoria Station. This includes a new overall roof covering the east facing rail bay platforms, the main concourse and Metrolink platforms, provision of a new mezzanine level and entrance to the Phones 4 U Arena and the remodelling and expansion of the Metrolink stop in readiness for 2CC.

What follows is a marathon photo set taken on 28th August. Apologies for this being so photo heavy, they were originally posted in 2 parts.

From the eastern footbridge the platform walls within the new Metrolink stop are clearly visible now.
