Broughton Road bridge in Salford to close on 5 January as rebuild resumes
Tuesday 30 Dec 2014

Broughton Road bridge in Salford will close to traffic on 5 January as work resumes to rebuild it as part of a £1bn investment to improve the railway in the north of England.

Network Rail temporarily reopened the bridge between Friday 19 December and Sunday 4 January 2015 to minimise the impact the closure had on local businesses over Christmas.

The closure is necessary to rebuild the bridge to accommodate overhead lines underneath as part of the electrification of the railway through the area.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “The bridge replacement is an essential part of our work to electrify the railway which will help to provide a better service to passengers. There is never a good time to close roads and we do all we can to minimise the impact as much as possible. A diversion has been agreed with the local authority and a diversion will be clearly signposted. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Once complete, the new bridge will not need any major work for over 100 years, providing additional benefits to the local road network. Electrification of the railway will provide faster and more frequent services, with more seats for passengers, and help support economic growth across the north west of England.

The bridge is due to reopen on 16 July 2015

Victoria station is getting on well.

I guess with engineering work happening in next two Saturdays (10th and 17th) we may start seeing wires and tracks getting put up here.

Work going on outside Victoria station for new 2CC line.

3025 tram heading off to Rochdale town centre.

More to come.

Double tram entry into Victoria station.

With them putting cover over stairs heading to MEN arena.

It was hard to take picture on stairs but here are two picture looking at new roof.

But nice to see them leave little holes on cover so you can still get good picture of new Victoria tram stop.

New Inbound line at Victoria seen to be coming on well too.

We now move outside Victoria station and see first piece of new 2CC line outside Football museums.

Get out of way pole.

This picture was took from Next store.

Come nine months time we may have new Metrolink station opening here.

I hope these are of some use or enjoyment for you! I had a friend with me who'd never been to Manchester before and he was very impressed by Metrolink. It really does provide a sense of 'city transport' in a way no other system in the UK yet manages.

TfGM steps up tram roadwork

Quote:
The passenger transport body has welcomed in the New Year with an increase in utility diversion work to make way for the Metrolink second city crossing.

Transport for Greater Manchester has written to occupiers along the new tram route with a schedule of road closures. The list covers parts of King Street, Cross Street, Brown Street, Oxford Road, Essex Street, Cooper Street, Marsden Street, Booth Street and Princess Street. The shortest closure is for one week from Monday 19 January on George Street at the junction of Oxford Road. The longest closure is for 12 weeks at King Street between Cross Street and Cheapside from Monday 5 January.

TfGM said works were "reduced [last month] to accommodate the increased numbers of people in the city centre over the Christmas period. As a result, these works will now be carried out along the 2CC route and adjacent streets in January 2015."

The second city crossing is due to begin operating in 2017; beginning in Lower Mosley Street and running through St Peter's Square, turning down Princess Street and heading along Cross Street and Corporation Street before re-joining the existing Metrolink line at the expanded Victoria Metrolink stop

Oh how ironic! It's almost like the tram's predecessor (the bus) has purposely rammed into the tram!
