Leigh Bus Station is getting a facelift
03 March 2015

People waiting for buses in Leigh will be sitting more comfortably in future when a £1 million facelift of the town’s bus station is completed.

Transport for Greater Manchester is improving the bus station as part of its bus priority package investment with work starting on 9 March; just weeks after the bulk of the associated town centre improvements have been completed.

Improvements include a new-look Travelshop, refurbished public toilets, new signage and re-decoration and re-glazing of the bus stands to create a brighter, more modern passenger waiting environment.

A new cycle hub will also be built to accommodate 46 bikes under full cover, with CCTV coverage and swipe card entry. The work is due to be completed by the end of the summer 2015

I made another trip into Manchester today and will post some sets of photos.

First Victoria once again.

It's only 10 days or so since I last visited Victoria but a lot has happened.

So much of the crash deck has now gone that the place looks like a different world it's so light.

Even Cigar Alley looks good.

P1100460 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100461 by sghyde, on Flickr

then you walk into a vast light cavern almost!

P1100462 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100464 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100469 by sghyde, on Flickr

They were working from mobile platforms removing that old cabling and also cleaning some of the stonework over the windows.

P1100472 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100489 by sghyde, on Flickr

As someone said over the weekend it looks so strange to see that gable end and truncated chimney over the information office.

P1100510 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100473 by sghyde, on Flickr

Flooring is being installed at various locations.

P1100511 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100512 by sghyde, on Flickr

The new PIDS alongside the mezzanine stairs were working, I think the screens may be the existing ones moved to their new location.

P1100528 by sghyde, on Flickr

It's almost as though the trams have never been away!

P1100496 by sghyde, on Flickr

Although they now serve a new destination.

P1100492 by sghyde, on Flickr

Shouldn't be too long before trams are using all four lines at Long Millgate.

P1100527 by sghyde, on Flickr

From the main footbridge new views open up as the remaining crash deck sections disappear.

P1100532 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100533 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100534 by sghyde, on Flickr

I nearly forgot the star of the show, the new roof which seems to be nearing completion although the panels were deflated today.

P1100452 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100451 by sghyde, on Flickr

The paving on Balloon Street seems to be restricted to giving access to the Co-op Bank building.

Now a look at 2CC progress starting with the Exchange Square to Victoria section.

Looking from Market Street junction rails are now in place on the westbound slab. I understand that the direction designations will change here from inbound to outbound and vice versa (or will it be southbound and northbound here?)

P1100396 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100398 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100399 by sghyde, on Flickr

Its a shame the glazing on the link bridge is so dirty.

P1100415 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100416 by sghyde, on Flickr

Looking towards Withy Grove they have made a start on the eastbound track slab.

P1100418 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100421 by sghyde, on Flickr

And we can now get an idea of the width of the island platform.

P1100422 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100427 by sghyde, on Flickr

Excavation for the eastbound track slab between Todd Street and Withy Grove is in progress.

P1100428 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100432 by sghyde, on Flickr

and as already reported traffic is now using the westbound alignment.

P1100430 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100433 by sghyde, on Flickr

Outside City Buildings.

P1100434 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100439 by sghyde, on Flickr

I then moved to Victoria where 2CC track laid under the Victoria project is approaching the interface between the 2 projects.

P1100458 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100456 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100457 by sghyde, on Flickr

then at the other end in St Peters Square

That short section of the outbound line as it starts to cross Oxford Street. I reckon that will shortly be prepared for the transfer of road traffic onto it to allow the second section over to Lower Mosley Street to be constructed.

Finally a few from Deansgate Castlefield today. The main progress is on the Exhibition Bridge where the old perspex cladding seems to have all gone now. Not easy to get to photographs though unfortunately.

I had a wander over to Deansgate Station to see if the view was any better.

Anyway at the other end of the stop work continues on the new stair access.

TMS signals and indicators have gained numbers,

P1100325 by sghyde, on Flickr

P1100323 by sghyde, on Flickr

The old style TMS loops are I think to allow the fitting of the trays with grass or sedum plants.

P1100318 by sghyde, on Flickr

There was some work going on the new outbound platform using what looked like a large disc cutting machine on the back of the platform.

Two news from TfGM:

Tyldesley market square and busway update
10 March 2015

Work to revitalise Tyldesley town centre through improved transport links and a transformed market square will start this month following feedback from residents.

There will be some activity on the square from this Thursday (12 March) as Wigan Council’s appointed contractor, North Midland Construction, prepares to start the major improvement scheme.

The Tyldesley market square investment goes hand-in-hand with Transport for Greater Manchester’s (TfGM) busway scheme to improve bus links between Tyldesley, Leigh and Atherton, through Salford and the heart of the city centre to Manchester’s Oxford Road.

Wigan Council considered 270 responses made by 112 people during the recent engagement, which included discussions with local businesses and two drop-in sessions for the local community to find out more about the proposals.

The main concerns raised by members of the public concerned car parking in the town centre, traffic flow and congestion within Tyldesley and the need for wider improvements to the town centre.

As a direct result of suggestions from members of the public, the council and TfGM have pledged to:
  • carry out a review of town centre parking as soon as the busway is operational to make sure town centre car parking spaces are available for shoppers;
  • review traffic flow and the operation of the new traffic lights in the weeks immediately following the start of the new busway services to make sure optimum traffic flow is maintained;
  • scope how extra street landscaping, hanging baskets and benches can be added to the scheme to make sure the benefits of the scheme are felt beyond the market square;
  • work more closely with all businesses, including the Tyldesley Town Partnership, to maximise the benefits of the investment in market square and promote Tyldesley as a destination for shoppers; and
  • explore additional public realm improvements in partnership with the local business community.
Residents and businesses will receive an update on the work. TfGM has also written to residents to update them about work along Astley Street

Free wifi goes live on city centre’s Metroshuttle
10 March 2015

Passengers hopping on Manchester city centre’s free Metroshuttle buses will be able to surf the web for free thanks to a new wifi service launching this week.

The new service will be offered on all 20 Metroshuttle buses linking the city’s main rail stations, car parks, shopping areas and businesses.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) – which owns Metroshuttle’s low-carbon fleet of buses – worked with Manchester and Salford City Councils and the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) – part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport – to fund the innovative scheme

Other things I didn't get photos of. The scaffold at the new hole in the wall for the bridge at the city end was just starting to be removed with the work on the wall finished. SPAD beacons are now also going in around the cornbrook viaduct end.
